I need some advice as to what hardware to acquire to provide a viable long-term, external photo file storage solution. To date I have relied on my 1Tb Mac hard drive, but ..... is it time for a change.
I am not a professional and never will be, but I do enjoy this "sport" and hope to stay active with it.
Type/size of external drive?
Any Adobe Lightroom-specific considerations other than the need for a reasonable data transfer to/from speeds?

I have a 2020 27" intel IMAC with Big Sur OS 11.7.10. About 5 month or so ago I was considering upgrading my MAC OS to Monterey when Ventura was the current OS. I got busy with other things including travelling and never got around to upgrading my OS. Now the current OS is Sonoma. I am not sure if I can now upgrade to Monterey or if I have to upgrade to either Ventura or Sonoma. Not ready to go from Big Sur to Sonoma. I understand Apple will not support Big Sur after Dec. 31. I would like know if I can still upgrade to Monterey or do I have to upgrade to Ventura? I prefer to not bypass Monterey to do the Ventura upgrade.

I am running Sonoma on a 2019, 27-inch iMac with no issues OTHER THAN the "evolving" method Apple uses to manage security and privacy :). Mine is a 3 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i5 system using 32 Gb RAM.

Has anyone used Apples new operating system Sonoma? Is it buggy. Do you think it is worth upgrading to. Thanks
I have been a Mac used for 19 years
For Apple OS upgrades, I usually wait a few weeks for the 1st or second update to occur. In this case when 14 turns into 14.0.1 or 14.0.2. This always happens. Then, I jump in -- after the initial "surprises" have been addressed.
It will only take a few weeks as Apple scrambles to recover from the blowback from initial field experiences.

Great scenics! Wonderful shot of the Devils Tower!
Wyoming is the least populated state, barely over half a million people. Which is why I wonder why there is a 4-lane highway in such a remote place as shown in picture #7.

Actually, that is a passing lane on a 2-lane hiway.

Are there any portable digital storage devices that have CF express or XQD card slots to allow downloading of images directly to the storage device instead of routing through a laptop ? I would like to avoid taking a laptop because of weight restrictions on African Safaris.
I use as many SD cards as I need to cover my needs on a trip. But, I backup them up to an external drive without a computer. My solution is shown on the attachment.
It requires only three "new" items for my travel kit:
1) Anker hub; 2) an external SDD drive; and 3) Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter. In this example I use a 2T Samsung as my external drive. My iPhone (with no additional apps) and the power bank are items I always travel with. This is not a fast backup process, but it works. The three "new" items + cables shown weigh ~8 oz.
Note: The iPhone is used only to control the process. No photo files are stored on the iPhone.

Totally agree with your process.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_mG9fFmVUoThis is how to do it - I know this works. For the SD card reader us the Apple product - 3rd party items sometimes do not work.
When I do his I backup frequently and never overwrite an SD card - buy more SDs

What camera and lens were you using plus settings that is a fantastic picture. One of the best details I have ever seen.
Thanks for your very kind comments.
Sony a6400 (mirrorless, APS-C) with Sony 70-350mm zoom lens (also APS-C)
set at 350mm (528mm equivalent with correction for cropped sensor)
f/8.0
ISO 100

-3.0 EV exposure
then post using Lr classic and Topaz AI
Couldn't pass up this shot last night.

From the west coast of Florida at 140 miles west, it has to be night launches for a decent photo.
Would be helpful if you would share the exposure setting for the 3-second shot. :)

After years of shooting Nikon I am making a switch to the Sony Alpha 7 III mirrorless. The lens that will be my everyday walkabout is a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art. Since this camera has no built in flash I will be looking at used Sony flashes. However in the meantime I have an Altura AP-N1001 Speedlite Flash I didn't use very much on my previous Nikon. Someone mentioned they thought it possible to use this on the Sony as a standby fill the gap flash until I acquire another. Is this possible since this is labeled "for Nikon"? I don't see how unless there is some type of adapter and even then would TTL be possible?
