Road trains similar to those in my attached photos are a common sight in most parts of Australia. Some weigh in at 160 Tonnes (176 US tons) or more, traveling at 100 kph (62 mph) on the open road and consume 1 litre of fuel every 900 metres traveled (approximately 2 miles per US gallon).

Fascinating subject. Essentially these road trains service remote towns and villages in your out back and are also used in mining operations. Presumably rain lines wouldn't work as well but I haven't found the reason yet; perhaps it's just a question of which technology was ascendant when the need arose.

A couple years ago I was in Australia in the far north, outside of Darwin if I remember right. Driving a rental car on the "wrong" side of the road. We got lost and didn't get back to the hotel until well after dark. Meeting those road trains in the outback after dark was an experience that I won't forget. And I can say without a doubt that they were going faster than 100 kph!

and the drivers can park those rigs as easily as one can park a bicycle!

Nicely done pics!
Those are like some of the shorter trains that I've seen pics of in other places, and there seems to be a remarkably great safety record among the drivers who commandeer the outfits....or at least there doesn't seem to be published information about their being a huge risk to highway travellers.

Beautiful shots 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈, but I think the guys here pulling ONE trailer are responsible for enough accidents. I'd hate to see what they could do here with the crowded highways we have with all our crazy auto drivers as well.

👍 There are certainly some here who should never have been turned loose to pull even one trailer.
