I have a D6 to shoot my son's basketball games in some of the worst gyms in the world relative to lighting. Not bad. Best I've found.

No issue that cell phones are here to stay. BUT...cell phones don't make a photographer any more than golf clubs don't make an excellent golfer. Almost everywhere I go I see people shooting like crazy on their cell phones. When I know the shooting conditions, it's easy to know what kind of images they are getting. Mostly garbage...which is my guess as to what millions of cell phone shooters are getting. Just look at what shows up on social media. For example: vacation pictures. Most of them are pure garbage. I'd be embarrassed to show them to family and friends. The horizon isn't straight. It's often hard to identify the subject matter. The image is out of focus. The image is under or overexposed. The shooter doesn't even know what the term "composition" means. I could go on and on. Great images are still taken by great photographers. And great photographers use really good equipment. Do I take pictures on my cell phone? Sure! But certainly not for any serious shoot of an important subject matter. I shoot college football frequently. If I tried to do this on a cell phone I'd lose my job within two weeks. I need the proper equipment. And I read often about people not wanting to carry around a lot of equipment. Okay. But accept the fact that you are going to be compromising some image at some point because you don't have the right lens or the right camera that can handle your lighting situation. I'll pay the price to get the images I want.

One of the best posts I’ve seen on UHH. I have no intention of going mirrorless, in spite of the positive comments I often read. I have a Nikon D850, a D6 and a D500. I love them all for different reasons, and when I look at my best work, I can’t imagine getting better images with a mirrorless. I have rented the Nikon Z6ii when shooting indoor theater, where quietness is important. (I liked the results, but no more than my D850 or D6.) So unless I’m somehow convinced of the significant step-up with new gear, I’m right where I want to be.

Nice story. I had my 60th grade school reunion a couple years ago. We actually had a great turnout, and now, I keep in touch with a few of my classmates that if haven’t seen in half a century! But I took my best camera, and it didn’t let me down.

Howard...you might be right on your second forecast, but I think you underestimate people's affection for the D850. I'd never give mine up.

I'm shooting FX with my D6 and D850, and all my lenses are newer F mounts.

I'm shooting a lot of plays lately, and the actors don't like hearing the shutter going off on my D6 and/or D850. I shot my last play with a rented Z6ii and was very happy with the results (using my F mount lenses). I could keep renting the Z camera body, but it might just be easier to buy a Z camera.

I've been considering getting a Nikon Z body (Z6ii or Z9) and I've read conflicting opinions regarding how much you "lose" when using F mount lenses on Z bodies (obviously with the adapter). Can anyone who has used both F mount and Z mount lenses on Z bodies weigh in on whether they are seeing any difference in the quality of their images. What are any other issues to be aware of? Thanks for the help. Bill

I trying to determine if there is any telescope with DSLR combination which will deliver tack sharp images of Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. Everything I see on the interest looks grainy or soft. Also, I’d welcome any feedback on using the Celestron Nexstar 8se in combination with a DSLR (Nikon D850).

This is an example of “Big Mistake/Little Mistake.” The guy you were talking to can’t possibly give you even one good reason for not using a lens hood (except laziness in putting it on). There is little mistake (in fact no mistake in this instance) for putting on a lens hood. However, what this person is also telling you is that he never wants to shot a frame with side lighting (a big mistake in creativity), and doesn’t care to protect his lens from damage (an even bigger mistake). When you meet people like this, just walk away. If there wasn’t a valid purpose in using a lens hood, God would not have created this useful accessory.
