I shot film for 30 + years and when I went digital, I looked for a camera that had the same color characteristics of the film that I shot; but more important to me, and why I resisted digital for so long, was that I did not want prints that looked "digital". I bought the Nikon DF because because of its enhanced D4 chip and am pleased with the results I get. Since then, I picked up a Leica Q for the same effect. Chip technology and the software developed, does matter.

I suggest you also look at a used Nikon DF. It was unfairly trashed by the press when it came out but now underused ones are a good buy. Given the price of older Ai Nikon lenses, you have 50 years of superior optics to choose from; and yes, you can easily live without autofocus.

DXO some years back purchased a roll of every film from back in the day and digitized them. They have a program called Film Pack that lets you take a digital image and convert it to a particular film i.e. Ilford, Fuji, Rollie, Kodacolor or B/W Kodak. For instance, I have used it to emulate the look of Tri X to great effect including control of the grain. Can't say that a comparison with the original would hold up, but since I have walked away from film some years back, it is good enough for what I need.

Thought to chime in on selecting a Nikon. I got my first one (Nikomat ftn) in Japan in 1968 and used it into the 80's until it broke and got dropped too many times. I was slow to go digital, but started with several Lumix with Leica lens, ending with the LX5 (which I still have and like); but I wanted to go back to a DSLR. I empathize with the anguish over what camera model to buy given how expensive cameras have become. My solution was the Nikon DF, which I bought because of the D4 chip and enhanced software which gives me the closest film color rendition that I have seen, having been raised on film. I also like the external controls and relatively small size. When introduced, it was trashed by the critics and the like because it was expensive and lacked features such as video, and portrayed as a nostalgic toy. Be careful of bad review press as folks like to be critics who may have never used the product. This is a phenomenal and solid piece of equipment that can now be found used for under $1500 or less. I can use my old Nikon glass I purchased in Japan, but now carry it around with a Nikkor 24 mm 1.8G which makes a light walk-around kit.

I think it has been discontinued as not a successful product and is now sort of an orphan but the experiment created a remarkable keeper of a camera.

Just saying,

My suggestion will always be the "no-compromise" app, or more accurately bundle. This would be Photoshop/Lightroom. My second choice would be DXO Photolab/Nik bundle. My last choice would be On1 RAW which is bundled with Effects, et al. The least desirable is On1 - it shows great promise and they are working overtime to steal some market share from Adobe, but even after 6 versions of migrating to their raw converter it still suffers from "NRFPT" syndrome (not ready fro prime time) - it crashes, some things take way too long to accomplish, etc. DXO PHotolab is pretty mature and Nik is a legendary plugin suite that is now integrated with PhotoLab. Honorable Mention goes to Capture One Pro - but this seriously underrates the application - IMHO it is the BEST raw converter on the market for a long list of reasons. My problem with it is that as good as it is, it is NOT a complete solution. It is a very powerful raw conversion engine, but it misses the mark on fussy, detail-level editing/retouching. However, I use it together with Photoshop/Lightroom - just because it is a better raw converter than LR.

There is a lot of junk out there for free or almost free - for me it takes too much effort to get the results I get with the above-mentioned applications, and yes, I do use all of them.

I want to second this suggestion. I use Photoshop but still keep my DXO Photolab for its noise reduction and geometric correction tools which are, in my opinion, far superior to Photoshop.

I have a Leica Q and it is a stellar performer: true color and 400 tri-X black and white quality; the 28mm lens alone is worth the price of admission.

Anyone out there have hands on experience with this lens, I have wanted one for a long time but the price keeps scaring me off. Currently there is a small rebate available as there is an even more attractive rebate available on Nikon's 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle zoom. Not sure I want/need that wide a lens. Had a Nikon 20mm f/1.8 for a couple of weeks; took it to the Pac NW for New Years, was disappointed with its overall performance after shooting a local downtown area on Christmas night; had it on a D850 and tripod mounted; shots just were not sharp enough in my opinion. Returned the 20mm. My old 28mm f/2.8 manual focus Nikkor from film days did better than the 20mm f/1.8.

I have a DF for all the reason stated; my first camera was a Nikomatt bought in Japan in 1969. I had my lenses converted to A1 years back and are naturals for use on the DF. But the reason I chime in on this discussion is that the color rendtion on the DF. because of the D4 chip and software enhancements Nikon made, is the least "digital" and the closest I have seen to film. To my eye the images are unparalleled in the digital camera market. And it is a joy to the hand to use. That said, I just bought a used Leica Q which is a whole new discussion.

I have used DXO Photolab for a number of years. I especially like its noise reduction for Raw and its Viewpoint is superior than PS for correcting image geometry.

This is a mirror of my experience starting in 1969 with Nikon equipment. l was late to digital but now have a DF which I bought for its D4 chip and ease of using my old Nikon glass which give up images much like film; a perfect meld of old classic softer images with the new technology. Recently got a Leica Q to which the DF holds up nicely, but much to be said for the look of Leica glass.
