Anyone out there have hands on experience with this lens, I have wanted one for a long time but the price keeps scaring me off. Currently there is a small rebate available as there is an even more attractive rebate available on Nikon's 14-24 f/2.8 wide angle zoom. Not sure I want/need that wide a lens. Had a Nikon 20mm f/1.8 for a couple of weeks; took it to the Pac NW for New Years, was disappointed with its overall performance after shooting a local downtown area on Christmas night; had it on a D850 and tripod mounted; shots just were not sharp enough in my opinion. Returned the 20mm. My old 28mm f/2.8 manual focus Nikkor from film days did better than the 20mm f/1.8.

Only you can decide how wide to go. I must say that it surprised me that you did not find the 20 mm f1.8 sharp because it is an excellent optic. The 28 mm f2.8 is a very nice lens. I have never used one but I have seen many images made with it and they have been superb.
With all due respect, wide angles need a different approach to the subject than other lenses. They tend to recede the background making it smaller while emphasis is placed on the foreground. For that reason alone it is important to get closer to the subject. Many of them distort perspective, specially at the corners, something that can be used creatively.

You already used a 20 mm lens and you have used the 28. What about 35 mm? Look carefully at your images and decide what lens offers the perspective you like.
Wide angles are a favorite of landscape photographers. I use my Nikon 12-24 f4 AF-S often and I can say the same of the Panasonic 7-14 AF that I use with my Olympus bodies.

So keep on using it. It’s a very fine lens. I’ve got 2 or 3 of them, if thaz a credible enuf vote of confidence !

As to your disappointment with 20/2.8 downtown night scenes, such scenes make great imagery, but are very poor scenes for lens testing. You gave up a very fine lens due to your questionable testing method :-(

Yep, b top gun, I have and have used the Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D on both my Nikon 24MP FX and DX bodies.
I'm not a pixel peeper but when used with proper technique I have found the results acceptable but perhaps a little soft in the corners. When I want to shoot WA I prefer to use my 24mm prime which seems to give me better results. Perhaps there may be some reviews on line you could check out. chase

The 28/2.8 is extremely common on the used market at very reasonable cost. If must own the very best, the one with the rotating front element will cost you a bit extra for that peace of mind.

If you are talking about the 28mm f/2.8 AI-S lens, I have that lens and I am very happy with it. I generally do not care to go wider than 35mm, but the 28mm AI-S had better ratings and reviews than the 35mm AI-S so I went with the 28mm.

Yes, AiS ...

The 35/2.0 AiS is really stellar, better than the 28/2.8 but not as ubiquitous. With no special care, nearly every shot with the 35 just sings. When needed, it also seems to be the ultimate streeter (on a Sony).

Also have the EOS and Maxxum 35/2.0 and they’re not bad but simply lack the Majik of the AiS (all on the same Sony).

Keep in mind that these ultra wide lenses are not corrected for a flat focus field. Many who are disappointed with them have tried to use them for situations like an entire stage from a short distance away. Because the focus plane is spherical, this will almost never yield happy results, especially at wide apertures. It will give the impression that the corners are soft, when in reality the photographer is just asking them to do something that they were never intended or designed to do.

I don't know about the other lens but, the 14-24 puts out great IQ. Keep in mind you will need a 150mm set up (no filter threads) for filters fir this lens if you use them. Here are a couple of pics taken with it.

I own several 1.8 primes, they are the 28, 50, and 85. All are sharp, all produce excellent images. The sharpness of any lens is up to the photographer. Yes, I owned and shot two versions of the 28 in film days, the 2.8 and 2. Both cannot stand up to the sharpness of the 28 1.8. That said I have also test fired the 24 1.8 and I can tell you I was impressed.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I have hands on experience with a Nikkor 28mm f/2.8. It's served its purpose quite well. I've been pleased with the results and consistent performance. It's definitely a keeper.

I also have the 20mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/2.8. All of them have produced quite superb results with all of the cameras I have.

Read Rockwell review. Get a 24mm f2.8 af or af d if you need the chip for flash distance. The af is the same glass and will be cheeper. I have one and it works great.

If it is the autofocus version I would avoid it as it isn't as sharp as the manual focus version. The 24mm f/2.8 autofocus (AF or AF-D) are much sharper and give you a bit wider angle than the 28mm but better performance than the old 20mm. I've had my 24mm for years now and will not part with it. If I need a wide zoom for the job I'll pull out my Tokina 17-35mm f/4 as it is a great lens that is built like a tank, is super sharp and costs less than the Nikon lenses in that range. You really can't go wrong with the 24mm. I usually have mine on a spare body so I don't need to swap lenses just grab the other camera and not worry. If you have any questions I'd be more than happy to chat with you.
