Thank you all for commenting. I think I might have not been clear as to why I even use the iPad to copy my photos onto. When I travel with my Canon system, every day I copy my photos onto the iPad. Then I use the SanDisk two sided device (lightning on one side, and USB on the other) and copy all the photos from the iPad onto the SanDisk. That is my backup, the SanDisk. USUALLY, I then delete all the photos from the iPad each day. This way, I don’t carry a computer around, and I have a backup for all my photos. I never use the cloud. It is not enabled. Maybe others of you do, but I do not. THIS ONE TIME, I decided to do some edits on the photos on the iPad, originally taken with the Canon 5Dii. It is not my imagination. The photos, once edited, are under 1 megabyte. The originals are 7 to 10 megabytes. So for some reason, it is not preposterous, as one of you thinks, but the editing on the iPad greatly reduced the file size of the photos. UNEDITED, the photos are original size. Once edited, they are greatly reduced in size. So far, I have not seen any reason for this. And once again, I am not at all interested in using the cloud for any purpose such as this. The one and only question is, why are the file sizes reduced when edited on the iPad. Thanks again for reading this, and I’m sorry if I was not clear from the outset. JimR

The problem is that the RAW images cannot be edited using the Photos app on the iPad. What you are actually editing is the jpg imbedded in the RAW image. To edit the RAW image you would need a 3rd party app. There are lots of details here https://thesweetsetup.com/using-ipad-photography-workflows/

If you’re on a Mac, take a look at NeoFinder.

The xmp sidecar files are used by Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw to store edit information. They are of no use to anyone who doesn't have these programs.

When you share images, send them as jpg format images and make sure they are in srgb color space. This is what all of your friends and relatives' computers will expect to receive for viewing.

Actually, .xmp files can contain quite a bit of IPTC information (e.g., geolocation, tags, copyright, etc.) regardless of any Lightroom / Photoshop edit info being present or not. As such, they can be useful to people who have never used LR / PS. For example, on Macs original photos can be exported with any IPTC data stored in .xmp sidecar files. The DAM NeoFinder (Mac) will also create .xmp sidecar files for e.g., Affinity Photo .afphoto files.

I am preparing for a landscape adventure in Canada.

Don’t want to burst any bubbles but are you sure you’ll be allowed into Canada? There is a ban on non-essential travel from the US into Canada these days due to COVID.

Check this out. Especially at ~7:00 minutes in for thoughts on when to use Denoise AI and / or Sharpen AI. https://youtu.be/VAFN1w2n75E

If your RAW photos are in "photos" (not "iphoto" as per a6k) then follow these steps:
1. Create a Smart Folder with the condition 'Photo', 'is', 'RAW'. This will place copies of all of your RAW photos in that folder.
2. Select all of the photos (Crtl-A) then Export -> Unmodified Originals.
3. If you have included Keywords, geolocation, etc. click the Export ITPC as XMP box.
4. Click 'Export'. You will then be asked where they should be exported to. Select the new location you want to move them to.
5. Once the Export is complete (it may take a while if you have lots of photos), check a few random ones at the new location to ensure they will open OK in LR or PS.
6. When you are confident they have been copied OK, go back to the Photos app, again select all the RAW photos in the Smart Folder you created and right-click Delete. You'll be asked to confirm.
7. The deleted photos will remain in the 'Recently Deleted' folder for 30 days but if you want to delete them immediately, open the 'Recently Deleted' folder, select all the RAW photos then right-click Delete. Again you'll be asked to confirm but this time to permanently delete.

From the looks of the information regarding your picture, it looks like you have it in the Mac Photos app. If you do 'Edit With' and select Affinity, Photos will pass it as a jpg, not RAW. You should first Export Original then open the exported file in Affinity. That should result in it opening in the Develop Persona

Hi very one.
I have been an active reader for two years and have learned much. Thanks

I am now looking for a DAM program that I can use for pictures, PDF and word files.
This will allow me to organize all of my photo stuff so I can find things.
I have looked at ThumbsPlus but I know there are other programs that will do
the job in an independent manner so thanks for the help.

I am 70 years old have a Nikon D7200 and a Lumix DCM-FZ300 I love both for what they can do.
I do macro, wild life, and family. I started photography in 1968 and have work film until three years go.
Thank again for any enlightenment you can share.

I would suggest taking a look at NeoFinder. It should be able to handle all the different file types you're interested in (including thumbnails for .afphoto files).

In my Email, this morning, I found an item about Canon issuing some free software to enable WIRELESS tethering their cameras to computers and perhaps other devices. I was disappointed because presently, this is only available in the U.S. and I am in Canada. Check it out.

Are you referring to Canon EOS Utility 3? If so, it is available in Canada.
