Hello Fellow UHHers. I typically save all my day’s photos onto my iPad when I’m away from home. This time, since i was away for a few days, I did some editing on the iPad, which has pretty capable tools on it. However, I noted when I then uploaded these edited photos into my computer, that the file size was much much smaller. Typically my photos are about 7 to 10 mb, but these photos edited on the iPad are less than 1 mb. Does anyone know why this is? Thank you! JimR

I believe there is cell phone photography section on UHH... You may want to ask there?

Are you talking about retouching or editing in the classical sense meaning culling, and organizing?

You don’t mention the software and that is important. If you are using Lightroom, my guess is you were uploading previews to the computer.

What software were you using? And how were you uploading the pics?

He didn’t say he was using a cell phone. It’s possible to save from a camera directly to an iPad. I do it sometimes when I feel that I need to be more frustrated. But I think this is really a software question.

Thanks to all who have replied so far. On the iPad, there is a built in editing software. So what I did is exactly what you would have done on a computer in PS: Crop, lighten shadows, add a bit of contrast, and sharpen. Again, once I did all that and copied those edited photos onto my computer, they were much much smaller (in resolution). I do not believe you can see “properties” on the iPad to know this is happening. My guess is that since Apple does this thinking you will keep them on a small screen, they don’t worry about image size in MB, but I was not aware at all. I’m glad I had not deleted the originals from my CF card. JimR

Ok so it sounds like you are using Apple's Photos software for the editing function. But your guess is incorrect. Apple does not "make the images smaller to keep you on the small screen"! That's perpostrerous.

However you have not explained how (or why) you are copying the images.

Apple's system is cloud based. The images are saved to iCloud then they are available on all your Apple devices, iPhone, iPad, computer. You don't have to copy them to the computer. Pics edited on the iPad will also appear in Photos on the Computer.

Yes I have. I don't think OP has. LOL. I don't use Photos that much, only for pics on the phone because it's convenient.

I was addressing the OP, but I understand why you thought I was talking to you, JD I'll add his name to my comment. Thanks.

JimR,

I had another thought for you. If you don't want to use iCloud, try using Air Drop. In my job I frequently take pictures to document the work. I use Air Drop to transfer those images from my iPhone to my Mac for use in reports, etc. Air Drop transfers full size images.

I was pulling your leg a little. ;)

Great to hear from you Linda. I recall we have something in common in that we both love backlighted scenes.

I hope you are doing well.

Thank you all for commenting. I think I might have not been clear as to why I even use the iPad to copy my photos onto. When I travel with my Canon system, every day I copy my photos onto the iPad. Then I use the SanDisk two sided device (lightning on one side, and USB on the other) and copy all the photos from the iPad onto the SanDisk. That is my backup, the SanDisk. USUALLY, I then delete all the photos from the iPad each day. This way, I don’t carry a computer around, and I have a backup for all my photos. I never use the cloud. It is not enabled. Maybe others of you do, but I do not. THIS ONE TIME, I decided to do some edits on the photos on the iPad, originally taken with the Canon 5Dii. It is not my imagination. The photos, once edited, are under 1 megabyte. The originals are 7 to 10 megabytes. So for some reason, it is not preposterous, as one of you thinks, but the editing on the iPad greatly reduced the file size of the photos. UNEDITED, the photos are original size. Once edited, they are greatly reduced in size. So far, I have not seen any reason for this. And once again, I am not at all interested in using the cloud for any purpose such as this. The one and only question is, why are the file sizes reduced when edited on the iPad. Thanks again for reading this, and I’m sorry if I was not clear from the outset. JimR

When you exported or saved the photos you were editing did the software save them as compressed JPEGs? I am not familiar with the iPad Photos app, but if it is a non-destructive editor the photos aren't actually changed until they are exported as a finished product.

In the Mail app touch the "Image size" area in the header. Several size (compression) options should show up.

I missed the boat on the Email" answer... how did you upload the photos from the iPad after editing them?
