I started out on an SRT-201 but quickly upgraded to an XD-5, which I still have. Pretty similar cameras, except that the XD-5 has Shutter & Aperture Priority modes, so you don't need to fiddle with exposure.

I'd offer to sell you the XD-5, but while it appears to work fine, I haven't actually run film through it in about the last 15 years. If I were you I would stick with what you have now. Run a roll of film through it and see what you get - it may work just fine.

My XD-5 used a 3v silver battery. I replaced it with 2 1.5v alkaline button batteries I had laying around, and it appears to work fine. You may be able to find a modern battery of the same voltage that fits the spot. I don't think the camera cares about anything but the proper voltage, though the new batteries might not last as long.

thanks for your note - do not ever sell your xd5 - made in conjunction with e leitz (leica) and built as good as a nikon f. even were the meter to go, it would still be a keeper. i've got a couple kicking around the house and would not let them go for anything! good luck with yours.

Not a good example. Winogrand actually spent a great deal of time working in a darkroom. He had some very interesting methods too.

Given that he necessarily took many thousands of images to get the few he was willing to work on and show or publish, his processing is of interest. One thing he insisted on was to not review a contact sheet until he no longer actually remembered taking specific shots. He wanted to only be influenced by what he saw in the image and not by what he might remember thinking it would be when he took it. A lot of people mistake his method to distance his memory as a lack of interest in anything to do with processing, but it actually was the opposite.

anyone good in the use of film, spends a hell of a lot of time in the darkroom, or has some very talented assistants who work for the photographer for a very talented salary!

What's a "tropical camera" WJ?

Something only used in the tropics, or what?

I have a 5x7, too ... haven't used it in years, though ...

But I still do use my 4x5 occasionally ....

I.C.A and Zeiss (after 1928) both built tropical cameras. our dear friend Ansel Adams used a 5x7 Juwel tropical. they all are wooden field cameras, but are drop bed folding plate bodies in everything from 9x12cm, 10x15cm and 13x18cm. the bodies were made from very hard woods and bound with german silver fittings. the idea was that in tropical climates the cameras would hold up and not rot out on you. the bellows were also manufactured to withstand tropical climates. since they were all plate cameras, the lucky or unlucky owner gets to look for a 2 stage film holder for them. today, the cameras with their standard lenses go for up to 2k. glad i got mine when i was young - like 50 years ago.

a really great all weather 5x7. what is yours and how come you are only using the 5x4? - wait... missing the 5x7 zone vi enlarger?

Trouble with that, is when the power goes off for a while, the film partially thaws out, and then when it comes back on ... you find you have spots on it ...

agreed, this is why the gods/godesses have made generac generators. no spots.

That's very noble of you. We should all strive to approach digital photography with the same honor, duty, and justice that film shooters do.

i always know what i am going to photograph (if we're speaking of landscape(s), long before i ever approach the subject. i usually take a year to photograph a particular object. light and time of year tend to dictate my work.

great cameras and the asahi/takumar lenses are very good, but do not match up to the imari/rokkor glass for the minoltas.

i am always looking to buy cameras in good condition, such as leica, nikon and medium format cameras and lenses. for your c330, $200 does not seem to be an unfair price. especially with the lens. on ebay, it depends on the time of year and exactly how the item is listed. this and other online sites along with commercial dealers can be very unforgiving as far as price is concerned. your friend got a good deal, thanks to you!

if anyone has something to sell such as mentioned above, you can pm me and perhaps we can work something out.

there is no doubt that with the advent of digital image making photography has been democratised and that is to the disadvantage of the practice.
it is also true that there are those people who are serious, discerning users of this medium and practice it well.

it is also true that film usage in formats from 35mm to 5x4 seems to be on an upsurge, especially among young people. both occurrances are to be congratulated.

i prefer haze filters rather than ultraviolet, as they "clean" the atmosphere, whereas the uv does not.

excellent 16mm movie camera for use. just remember, processing costs per foot of film is about 4x more than 8mm.

for a certain generation digital image making has become entranced with all the "post processing" programs available. you can read about many of them every day on this site. like any other tool or technique it all depends on the users sense of honor and integrity. as i use film, only, the negative becomes the referential point of my photograph. i am not in favor of unlimited manipulation unless performed by an artist who has something to say and uses the available tools to express and further her/his vision.
