Great shot! When I was a kid in Central Florida, I'd see these a lot. We called them Blacksnakes. A few people called them Kingsnakes. If this is the same specie, this snake is harmless, and helpful, but keep them away from your henhouse; they love eggs.

Wow! Whatta shot! I love the city lights (?) on the horizon just to the left of the building. What is the horizontal trail above and to the right of the building...maybe an aircraft?

There's a neat little cheat sheet published free of charge by pixtus.com that you might want to see. The website contains downloads of this in a couple of formats. It has a lot of good basic info. I'm new to digital too.

I am finally shifting over from my beloved film to enter the strange unknowns of digital photography. I don't think digital is bad; it's just the intractable old f*** (80 yrs) in me that is controlling my attitude. That said, I will probably end up with a Nikon 7100 because I can use most of my lenses (in manual) with it. I am fascinated by the 40X zoom of the new Nikon bridge 520, and would appreciate any input from HH regarding picture resolution and quality at the various ISO's and lens lengths. Thanks in advance.
PS: This is a GREAT site!

I don't see how you could make it better. It says, clearly, what you want to say. Changes can make it different... good or bad, but you will no longer have a portrait that so compellingly expresses your feelings.

Because of the bright red feet, this appears to be a juvenile bird, probably less than 3 months old, and barely out of the nest. (The feed darken down as the bird matures, somewhere around six months.) Lacking the cobby shape of a pigeon, this individual appears to be a dove or dove hybrid. (Yes, they can interbreed.) The photo is an excellent expository work, clear and clean.

It's certainly not important, and the doves don't care, but for what it's worth, some of the books call them "African Ringnecks" (please excuse the spelling), or Streptophelia Risoria. They (and mixed breed offspring) are quite common in the U. S. too. They are easily tamed, like their snow white cousins, and make great pets (if you love birds). These are fine exository photos and would be excellent for inclusion in most texts.
