I travel to too many places that still do not have reliable internet access to use the cloud. Cloud is not an option for me.

I would place an order with B&H and Adorama and whichever one gets them first is yours and cancel the other.

If you really want one, that is a good idea.

If you look at the history of D850 availability over the past several months, you'll see that B&H deliveries have been running roughly 3 to 5 weeks behind Amazon and Adorama for several months now, based on order placement date. As pointed out, last week Amazon was filling orders placed May 16, Adorama was filling orders placed on May 1 and B&H was filling orders placed on April 14. Three weeks prior to that, it looked like Amazon was filling orders placed April 28th, Adorama was filling orders placed April 16th and B&H filling orders placed April 12. That would seem that over the three week period, Amazon filled 20 days worth of backorders, Adorama filled 17 days of backorders and B&H only 2 days of backorders. I wonder if that is because so many more people have been ordering from B&H so there is a bigger backlog with them, or B&H orders to and shipments from Nikon are for considerably fewer cameras than the other dealers

Wasn't my concern, just a comment back to the OP. Of course the world market is much bigger than the US but if the world demand is high, how are so many of them getting into the US market? Apparently there is not that big a demand throughout the world as in the US, so the excess can be brought into the US for sale on eBay and other smaller camera shops. On the other hand, personally, I'd prefer to wait for a US warrantied model just so I could have confidence that I could have USA Nikon service my camera if needed. At the same time, the only Nikon item I've had to have serviced in nearly 40 years was two years ago, on my old Nikon F4, well out of warranty, so it went to APS for an LCD replacement and CLA. I'm not in such a hurry to get a D850 (or any Nikon gear) that I'd forego the USA warranty just to satisfy a GAS attack.

There are plenty of D850's available if you are willing to accept a "grey market, no Nikon USA warranty" camera. Supposedly a "grey market" Nikon D850 is exactly the same as a USA warrantied camera. It is just the USA warranty. The big question to Nikon is why are there so many "grey market" D850's available and such a back log on USA warrantied D850's if they are indeed the same camera.

I guess because the topic is Nikon vs Sony. And it wasn't a negative towards Sony, just that it might be because it was a new camera to him, there might have been some option that prevented him from taking pictures. Nikon can have the same situation if an option like Release + Focus is selected, where if the camera isn't in focus, the shutter won't release. More a case of really knowing your (new) camera before taking once in a lifetime photos.

Was at a college graduation last weekend and sitting next to a gentleman who had a Sony A7III so we just had to talk cameras while waiting (mine is a Nikon D800). We'd been snapping a few generic photos prior to the start of the graduation and all of a sudden he said "wow, my camera isn't working". Asked him what was not working and he said it just stopped taking pictures. Power was on but the shutter wouldn't actuate. He swapped batteries and still had the same problem. We fiddled with settings (or he did, I know nothing about the Sony) and then did what he called a full reset. Still, no pictures. He said everything looked right in the settings, but the shutter just wouldn't actuate. I lent him my camera and he tried it out, then used it to take pictures of his daughter when she came in and got her diploma. I used my camera later when my son-in-law went up. At the end we went out and used my laptop to get his daughters photos off my card and copied them to a blank card he had. He uses Lightroom Classic and said he'd have no problem with my NEF files. He was quite grateful and said he'd contact me later when he found out what happened. He'd not had the camera too long and was afraid maybe he had made some inadvertant settings change that disabled the shutter, although he'd hoped a full reset would have cleared it.

I expect 98% of my photos will be gone. The ones that will be saved have been or will be added to our family history album which contains family member photos going back to the Civil War era.

Paraphrased, the questions were effectively:
A. Have you EVER used manual, even occasionally
B. Have you NEVER used manual.

The problem is that with question A you can shoot 99.9% of your photos using the various camera controlled automated features and you would have to select A as your choice because of that .1% occasional usage of manual however a large A count seems to be leading many to the conclusion that MANY people shot manual, foregoing the cameras automated features. I chose A because I am in that boat. The majority of the time I use A or S modes, very occasionally P. Once in a while I'll try something unique and go to M. So a high A count doesn't mean we don't make significant use of our camera capabilities.

If this poll were to be redone, it should provide selections to narrow down the percentage of manual use, just not a yes or no answer, then we might get a truer idea of the prevalence of manual usage. For example, in increments of 10% from 0% to 100%, approximately how much of your photography is done in manual mode.

RE: The Apple ipad to SD card reader. Be aware that it is a reader only. You can copy your photos from the SD card to the ipad, but you cannot copy from the ipad to the SD card. At least I haven't found a way to do it. If anyone has this device and has found a way to copy from the ipad to the SD card, please post how it is done, it's like the SD card is locked in read only mode.

1998, in "Fuddy Duddy", cost $0.00.

My wife and I had bought a Hot Air Balloon ride for her mother's 75th birthday. We tagged along as part of the chase crew. Balloon landed in a field about 10 miles from BGM airport. While working the balloon recovery, we heard a really loud prop aircraft heading our way. Looked down the valley and was shocked to see a B-17 coming over the treetops (actually about 2500 feet but looked much lower!). Since I based our Cessna 172 at BGM, I could estimate that on his heading and altitude, he was probably making an approach into BGM, since I flew that approach quite often. Since we were finished with the balloon, we hopped in the car and drove quickly to BGM to see if it actually landed. Sure enough, there it was on the tarmac with a fuel truck in attendance. Struck up a conversation with the crew and found they were enroute to the new warplane museum (Wings of Eagles) near Elmira, NY (Horseheads). After a lot of hangar flying, the AC said since this was just a ferry flight, they had a few empty positions available, and would I like to go with them. Took me less than a second to ask my wife if she would mind driving to ELM and pick me up there. Being the nice wife she is she said "NO, I want to go TOO!" Actually she said fine, and I got to go with the crew in Fuddy Duddy. As we were taxing out to the active 34 I realized I left so quick I forgot my camera, which was still in the car. So I didn't get any pictures in flight. I did get some static pictures on the ground when my wife arrived with the car, but the once in a lifetime in-flight pictures just weren't to be. From that time on, I treat a camera as my second priority in the "never leave home without it" category, you may not get a second chance at something, so be prepared.

By the way, I did donate $100 to the museum after the ferry ride.

That brings back memories! In 1972 my wife and I were returning from vacation on Prince Edward Island and decided on a side trip thru the forests of New Brunswick and Quebec via Edmundston, Riviere-du-Loop and then down the river to Quebec City. Right in the middle of the forest (or so it seemed) what did we come across sitting in a field, but a huge airplane. Being a pilot myself, I was really impressed on how they managed to get it into the middle of the forest in what appeared to be one piece. Talk about a really (really!) short/soft field landing! Had to stop and take a look and found it was an Avro Lancaster, appeared complete but quite weather worn. Now before you ask, yes, I did take pictures of it, 35mm with my Canon F1 and 6x7 with my Mamiya RB67 Pro. Unfortunately this was long before lightroom cataloging and my filing system from that long ago is very poor. Gotta love digital cataloging with lightroom! I'll try to look thru my files and see if I can find the negatives to scan, but I'm not gonna hold my breath, at this age afraid to stop it on purpose too long!
