Nikon D850 Back Orders

I am very interested in getting a D850. I have a D610 but I am frustrated by the continuous auto focus to not capture the focus on birds in flight, motor sports and soccer more than 60-75% of the time. However, no one seems to have them in stock. Do you think the back log of orders will be gone by August? I want to shoot motor sports in September and would like to have the new camera by then. I am wondering if it is a Nikon production problem or a demand outstripping supply flow? Both?
Thanks

Chris, before you spend that kind of money to solve an issue, are you sure that the D850 will provide you the needed focus solution? Have you tried one to determine the capabilities? Lastly, do you have the necessary software to process the images or will you have to upgrade?

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply. I have use a D750 and an D810. Their focus systems are superior to the D610 for sooting moving subjects in continuous auto focus mode. I do have LRCC and PS. I use an HP tower with soild state drive and two hubed external photo drives (main and back up). File sizes should not be a problem but uploading and post may be slower.

Chris

Drive up to Samy's Camera in Los Angeles. Ask up on the 3rd floor if they have D850s in stock. I walked in in early January and they had one in the back.

I need an 850 too.
My 800E is just not producing.

I called my guy at Samy's and no joy on any time frame on clearing out back log. I am not their biggest customer by a long shot but I am a customer and they have helped me a lot in the past. They have little information from Nikon on shipments to them of D850's.

Consider renting one for motorsports in September.

The Nikon D5, D500, and D850 have Nikon's best autofocus system. If you don't mind the DX format get a D500. I've been impressed with mine. It has the same tough build quality and weather sealing as the D5. You can still use your FX lenses with it.

On previous cameras, data related to autofocus was processed by the same micro-computer that controlled the rest of the camera. On the D500, this is now carried out by a dedicated processor solely for autofocus, enabling the instantaneous processing of the enormous volume of data streaming in from the 153 points on the autofocus sensor. This dedicated processor also contributes to the enhanced tracking performance of moving subjects, adding to the D500’s excellent autofocus performance.

I Almost bought an 800e recently but still holding off. What is it about your 800e that's "not producing"?

Chris,
You are are West Coast guy. Just jump on a flight to Bangkok. All the major photo shops (Big Camera, Fotofile, World Camera, etc.) have one in stock. Latest price I got just last week was 115,000 Thai baht - about US$3,600. A slight premium for jumping the queue! Plus you can shoot plenty of exotic photos to break it in!

Before anyone panics, yes it's not a US designed camera...but I've had plenty of Japanese SLRs & DSLRs. Never had a warranty problem, so the odds are with you! Just sayin'.

PM me and we'll pick you up at the airport! 😊
Honest! Cheers, Don

Satire.
I have GAS for an 850. The 800E is realistically more than I need.

There are plenty of D850's available if you are willing to accept a "grey market, no Nikon USA warranty" camera. Supposedly a "grey market" Nikon D850 is exactly the same as a USA warrantied camera. It is just the USA warranty. The big question to Nikon is why are there so many "grey market" D850's available and such a back log on USA warrantied D850's if they are indeed the same camera.

Perhaps the world market is a bit larger than the US market. They are all made by Nikon or authorized manufacturers. Is it the product or the warranty that concerns you?
