When shooting family/grandkids, I shoot raw + jpg . . . That way I can use them on social media immediately and/or give them to my family members. But I still have the raw file in case I want to post process and print or post.

If you have an APS-C camera, then I would go with the 16-300. It will give you more wide angle capability. I have both the Tamron 18-270 and Tamron 18-400 and think they are great "do it all" lenses . . .

I have the Tamron 18-270 . . . And it works great on all my Nikon (D3300,D5500,D500). You should stick with Nikon so you can continue to use this great lens. A D7200 would be the best upgrade for you, but the D3000 and D5000 series cameras are also good upgrades and cost a lot less; they just lack some of the capabilities of the D7000 series.

If it was me . . . I'd look for a wide angle lens that could capture more of a building . . . Something in the 12-18 range . . .

So . . . The red dot is aligned with my lens' center focus point . . .
My lense is zoomed out to 600mm . . .
My center focus point is on continuous focus . . .
So I know as long as I keep the dot on the target . . .
The center focus point should be on the target and focusing . . .
I can shoot away 10 fps . . .
I don't need to look thru the lens as long as focus is working . . .
And red dot and focus point are properly aligned . . .
Everything works fine . . .
That's the way I think it should work . . .

You two must be right and I am dreaming that it works for me. I will remove them, trash them and delete all those BIF and airplanes I didn't get pictures of because it is of questionable value and doesn't work.

Next time the Canon people are doing an exhibit at my local store I will tell the two who tried my rig and took down the info on where to get the sight and mount adapter to not bother or get rid of it because it doesn't work.

Hey ! I'd sure like to find out where to get a hot shoe mount adapter . . . I already have a couple of the holographic type red dots . . .

Have you double checked the switch on the lens? And the switch on the camera?
And clean contact points on lens and body . . .

OK . . . Now you guys got me thinking . . . I think the red dot sight would really work well . . . I'm pretty sure I have a couple out in the gun safe, so I'm gonna try and adapt one to fit in the camera hot shoe . . .

I put a 1x2 next to the bird feeder so the stellar Jays had a perch . . . Trouble is: the squirrel can use it also. We've got lots of Stellar Jays, but only one squirrel . . . I wanted to give him a case of lead poisoning, but my wife won't let me . . .

The photographers who work for Royal Caribbean Cruise ships, and Disney World shoot Nikon. That is a compelling reason to switch leanings back to Nikon.

And NASA also . . .

I have both the Tamron 150-600 G2 and the Tamron 18-400 for my Nikon D500 and D5500. They are both great lenses, but the 150-600 is just too big and heavy to use for a walk-around lens . . . I only use it with a tripod and gimble. The 18-400 is an out standing walk-around lens and stays on my D500 about 95% of the time . . .

Since your bridge camera doesn't have interchangeable lenses, you are not locked into staying with the Canon brand to save money on lenses. I'm not sure if you can find a "full frame" sensor DSLR with lenses for less than $1000 unless you can find a good deal on a used camera; But there are several "cropped frame" sensor DSLR'S with 24 megapixel sensors out there as "kits" with one or two lenses for the under $1000 price range. Go to your local Camera store and check them out . . .
