god knows i love those "tough" front elements. especially the ones lovingly and finely sanded down by cleaning with steel wool.

once you understand "available dark" and learn to manipulate your exposure with regard to obtaining the greatest possible detail without blowing out the highlights, you will be on your way. - good luck.

Can anyone give me their thoughts on this lens? I shot it on my D850 and it looks good.
Thanks to all in advance!

all mirror lenses were roughly similar - all produced pretty much the same results. the 500mm and 250mm minolta rokkors were exceptionally good with colour materials. with the nikkor and other lenses, be sure you also obtain the 4 rear filters for the lens. these actually complete the optical formation of the lens.

the limited aperture of f8, of course, will require you to make adjustments via shutter speed of if digital iso.

I am looking for a lens for my Nikon camera that I bought a couple of months ago that came with the kit. I am looking for a lens that can bring me form amateur to professional in the future, that is not expensive. I know you are saying, this guy is crazy.

the 50mm f1.8 nikkor lens should do it.

Back in the days of 35mm film, 50mm lenses were also called Normal Lenses. I thought that was because 50mm most closely matched the the normal view of the human eye.

you are correct. and it should be noted that 95% of photographs in the film decades were made with 50mm lenses, in slr cameras. for rangefinder cameras with interchangeable lenses, 35mm was the preferred focal length.

For you that shoot transparency film, I would like to know what lab you send out to for E-6 processing? Then do you scan or have it done at a lab that uses a drum scanner? If you do the scanning, what scanner do you use?
I want to thank you for your help.

i do my e6 processing at home. the kits are readily available and with a changing bag, just as easy to process as black & white.

Other than long range wildlife photos and sporting events,.... how do you use your 500/600 mm lens?
Thanks in advance.

most use of my 500mm lenses is to compact the perspective of the image

the 1.8 is superior to the 1.4 with the aperture wide open. with a 35mm or full frame digital imaging device, the 50mm f1.4 has a depth of field from the tip of the nose to the eye.

good for you. i also really liked the build quality and optics of the 28-105 and that zoom covered all the focal lengths that were of concern to me. i really think you made a wise choice. also, don't abandon your smc pentax and takumar lenses. many of these are excellent. when i lived in england, in the 60's the pentax was first choice among fashion and reportage reporters with the nikon f coming in a far second. just depends, i guess, where he advertising departments want to put their dollars.
all the best to you

I guess my B&J 5x7 must also be a Tropical Camera, then ... it's all wood with gold-color brass fittings and a red bellows ... pretty camera ....

Not really designed to be used on a tripod, though ... as it's a long flat bed .... I've used it with the Caltar 150 from the Calumet, and made proofs ...

But, you're right - w/o a 5x7 enlarger, it's kind of limited ... looked into it - but I just don't have the height necessary for a 5x7 enlarger .....

Had it since the late 70s ... picked it up for a hundred bucks ... just to have it, you know? ... when I want big prints, I use my 4x5, and Beseler 4x5 ....
I guess my B&J 5x7 must also be a Tropical Cam... (show quote)

good stuff. the B&J is a classic. what i love, other than my 2000 pound 5x7 zone vi enlarger is making contact prints of my 5x7 negatives. really something. give it a shot!
