Was the Republican Party in such terrible shape before the 2010 elections?? Just my opinion and for the most part of what I've read that's all any of this is but the election of the Tea Party congress lead to the demise of the Republican Party. You have extremists like Michelle Bachmann, Ron Paul (who makes his dad look like a genius), Sean Hannity, Ann Coultier and the list could go on for ever. Every time one of these total nut cases opens their mouth it drives more folks towards the left. There are great leaders who are potential candidates for the next election but until you get rid of the Tea Party from your delegation the GOP will never win another election........
Was the Republican Party in such terrible shape be... (show quote)

In my opinion there are extremists in both party's that tend to put out radical viewpoints. I believe that Obama is extreme in his insistence that his view is the only valid path for our Country to take, and any variance to that path will not be tolerated. His "My way or nothing" position has stalled most progress in forging solutions to our problems. The response to that position by the Repubs has been that "the Nothing" is preferable to knuckling under to Obamas demands, so here we stay, locked in gridlock. The solution is for each side to give up a little on their demands There is no doubt that the Dems have been winning the PR game, but that most likely is because they control most of the Press, and their side is able to paint most every situation to portray the Repubs as the "Bad Guys" The few voices that the Repubs have in Talk Radio and Cable TV tend to then sound shrill and out of touch because the preponderance of media and entertainment voices deprecate them so constantly for not seeing the world as they do. Just think what we would have if everyone did see the same way as our dear leaders; its called a Dictatorship! Is not the open discourse of two or more points of view a healthier choice for our country? Be careful what you wish for. When Obama has both Houses under his total control all we got was Obamacare, and we are only just beginning to see what a complete mess that is turning out to be.

Well, I am not in love with republican politicians and I think that it would be good for some of the old stalwarts to move on... But I honestly don't believe that the republicans are anti anti black or anti latino... there is room for differing views as to how immigration should be fixed, and I would hope you can see the unfairness if just giving people a free pass who came here illegally. The country is waking up to the depth of some of the issues and this includes republicans, they may be late in coming to the table on some of those issues but common sense eventually will rule the day. As far as the notion you have of republicans being against blacks and Latino's, I would suggest much of that is from a concentrated effort of the left to portray them that way and then a few pockets on state law makers that have handled some of the issues rather poorly. Personally I don't know the validity of the issues that for instance Arizona faces but I suspect they are much more severe than DC would care to admit... just a couple of years ago Phoenix was worse for kidnapping than Bogota Colombia which had always had the reputation of being the kidnapping capital of the world... you have national parks in Arizona where the government has posted for people to stay out of because of the drug and people trafficking in them makes them unsafe for our citizens to use them... I can't speak to Arizona, but I do know that the democratic party does not want to discuss many of the issues that state faces either. The democratic party did everything it could to present the republicans as being anti everything and to be honest they were very effective at it... and republicans did no present a well reasoned and palatable argument as to why this was untrue, then you had a couple of politicians and state legislatures that crossed a few different lines, but their actions do not represent the national party. A couple of examples of republicans losing fights that they should have won were both voter ids and school vouchers, voter ID was somehow won by the democrats even though 80% of Americans supported it... School vouchers offer the most benefit to inner city children attending failing schools, many of those parents fully support the idea, just watch the raffles for charter schools in NY and tell me that there is not support... The dems did a good job of defining the republican party as something that people can not trust and as a party only looking out for the wealthy... It is not true, that is not what conservatism stands for, but I agree with you that many see it that way.

There is a flip side... you say that the republicans don't care about the minorities, but I would ask you, what has the current administration and congress done to advance the condition of the African American community in this country.... The issues are deep Richard, you know this probably better than I do and the democratic party's lip service at some point will run thin and their unbridled spending with nothing to show for it will catch up to them.... The republicans will not come back until they can better articulate why there ideas are beneficial, but they certainly are not simply looking out for the rich, some of the individual politicians, maybe but that is not what the party stands for... and I promise you that you can find democratic politicians that are just as bought and paid for as are the republicans...

The republicans have an uphill road Richard... but those of us who are paying attention know this... it does not mean that we sell out our principles what it does mean is that we get rid of a few hard headed politicians and have better dialogues with each other and with the country... It is also time for the republicans to stop catering to the religious extremes, that does not mean that we not stand for our religious rights, but that we stop with the arcane pandering that leads to comments like "a real rape will not result in a pregnancy" or that "pregnancy resulting from a rape is god's will". Like I said, it will not be an easy road, but it is doable, it is also helped by your party's fiscal irresponsibility with little to nothing to show for all the spending it supports, sooner or later the youth of this country will wake up to the fact that they are being totally screwed by the current generation in power.
Well, I am not in love with republican politicians... (show quote)

Very well spoken! I do agree with your response. Having been a Republican all of my life I am sad about the demonstrated poor execution of the Republican Principles we have seen since Reagan left the scene. I am equally sad to witness the path that the Democrats are taking the country. We have seen the results of the Obama vision play out where ever they have been implemented before, but we are still marching toward oblivion like a bunch of lemmings. Unfortunately, already too many people are at the government trough now to voluntarily turn this society around. I fear that Obama's policy of pitting the Have's and the Have-Less members of our country against each other is leading us into eventual physical conflict that will destroy America as a democracy. Eventually those that are able to, will just go somewhere else. Who then shall carry the "less fortunate"?

When you finally start to collect your SS benefit the gov't then taxes you again on it as an income! A scam is correct, that's why congress exempted themselves from having to participate.

I think it is worthy of note that SS was originally created as a benefit that was not taxed and functioned in that manner until the Clinton administration changed the law to make the SS benefit taxable. It was Al Gore that cast the tie breaker vote to make this happen. Who can honestly believe that the Dems are "for the middle class"?

Just about all the people working on cruise lines with the exception of the officers are grossly overworked, underpaid people from countries with very poor economies. Mostly from the Philippines and Romania. In service jobs such as cooking, waiters, porters, maids etc. They do a wonderful job, they are sweet, attentive and caring people. Most of them have families they support and care about in their home countries. They get to go home seldom and their stays are short. The problem with people from these lands is they are also employed as engineers, mechanics, plumbers, electricians etc., onboard and many if not most are not trained to perform at a skill level sufficient to assure safety. Like the service people, they are grossly underpaid and quartered in small, inside, rabbit hutch like cabins where sound and beneficial sleep is difficult. The result of these draconian practices in the name of cheap fares is a compromise in safety. I have spoken with many of these people and know that of which I write here. Also passengers seeking very cheap fares have a tendency to leave very cheap tips. These people derive fully half or more of their compensation from tips. I leave the conclusions up to you.

I totaly agree with you, I get upset when people treat the the waiter like dirt and are not present at dinner table the last day so they of the cruise so don't have to leave a tip
quote=Croce Just about all the people working on ... (show quote)

Being a veteran of 66 cruises I have had the opportunity of befriending many cruise staff and can only recall one of those workers bitterly complain about their working conditions, and that worker happened to be on an American college woman on a American flagged ship sailing the waters of the Society Islands (Tahiti) about 28 years ago. Virtually every cruise staff I have had the pleasure of getting to know spoke fairly highly of their chosen career aboard ship, and that is a cross section of almost every cruise line operating over the past 40 years. It's true that most staff is recruited from areas of the world that have a low economic level, and are employed by the ship line as contract employees (usually on a 6 to 9 month contract) A significant majority of the staff members that I have come to know are consistent repeat contractors. They consider the job as their career, and tend to work their way up the ladder of job assignments to the point of becoming managers. Those that are unhappy with the life aboard ship just don't re-up after their contract period has run it's course. As far as "Tips" are concerned, virtually all of the lines have gone over to a standard rate of gratuities being added to the passengers account and distributed to the staff that services the passenger on a fairly equitable basis. On the whole, the service staff on the ships are there because they choose to be. It is true that some lines are much better on training their staff then others, and that shows up in the way a passenger is treated aboard. There are some lines that I choose not to travel on, simply because we feel that service is less then we are used to, but there are many really excellent lines that offer travel at excellent rates ( as long as one can wait and respond to the really good deals that are offered during certain times of the year and on "last minute" opportunities) so the choice to utilize only the best run lines is quite easy. We average about 3 cruises per year and tend to select only trips of 10 to 24 nights. Actually, we are scheduled to leave in April on a back to back transatlantic to Spain and then on a second line to Sicily and Italy. I hope that this info might be of help to any would-be cruisers because it really is a wonderful way to travel.

No, there is no justification for a preemptive strike and I doubt even Israel is that crazy.

I seriously doubt that Obama would pull the Nuc trigger unless Conus was hit first. Also consider that South Korea would also be directly by the fallout etc from leveling North Korea.

It is my opinion that a Electronic View Finder is a far more important feature then a articulating LCD. Best of all worlds would be to have both, but if a choice had to be made I would definitely opt for the EVF.

What is all the smoke and heat about the citizens having weapons about anyway? There are far more people getting maimed and killed by our automobiles each year and its just chalked up to "the cost of living our lives". Why not use the same logic with the very infrequent instances of mayhem where guns are the instrument used. Mentally disturbed people are the cause of that mayhem virtually every time, but we spend enormous amounts of time and emotion focusing on the instrument of mayhem instead of the cause of it. Get the crazies out of our population and that will serve to reduce the instances of mass murder far more then trying to implement the virtually impossible task of trying to control 300 million guns that are already in the public's hands. That idea is really tilting at windmills! Thats my 2 cents worth.

If you repeat a lie often enough, most of people, especially the more dim-witted ones (no offense intended), will believe it. I like the oft-repeated statement that "no one in Washington is proposing" (Sarge's quote)gun confiscation. Senator Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Rosa DeLauro have, as have New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Cuomo's argument is that once we ban the future sale of "assault weapons" and large-capacity magazines, we will obviously have to do something about the millions of those already in civilian hands. It may be called a "forced buy-back", but it is in fact confiscation. That could never happen here? Well, it already did in 2005 in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina when the National Guard went house to house and confiscated legally-owned firearms, leaving honest Americans at the mercy of marauding gangs. The Federal court eventually ruled that this was unconstitutional and ordered the guns returned, but the deed was done. To believe that this couldn't happen again is dreaming. The fact that there "is no practical way to do this" only makes it difficult, but no less of a goal by many.

Here's one for you conspiracy theorists. The current assault weapon ban frenzy was created by the horrible tragedy in Sandy Hook. Interesting, because an assault weapon was not used there. The mother had the weapon in question special-ordered from Bushmaster so it met Connecticut's tough ban on assault weapons. So by the government's own definition, it was not an assault weapon (this in itself demonstrates the fallacy of the proposed bans because they are based on form, not function). Why have we not seen a photograph of the actual weapon used in that massacre? We have seen generic Bushmaster 223's (the big, bad, mean looking ones) plaster all over the media, but the police have not yet released a photograph of the actual weapon used at Sandy Hook. Why not? Well, duh, it doesn't "look" like an assault weapon and thus wouldn't support the pro-ban arguments. If anyone can find a photo of this weapon please post it here.

Gun violence in this country (and the more pertinent question of violence in general - it doesn't really matter to the poor woman who was beaten to death by an abusive partner that he didn't use a gun)is a topic of legitimate debate in this country. Perpetuating lies, myths, made up or "cherry picked" statistics on either side of the issue is not the way we should go forward.
If you repeat a lie often enough, most of people, ... (show quote)

As a point of fact, the so called "Assault Rifle" was never even taken out of the perps car by the perp. All of the mayhem was done with two legal pistols, and another sad but accurate point is that most of the "multiple" wounds inflicted on the victims were because of the high velocity ammo used which went right through the first victim and hit others before it ran out of energy. Most of the articles on the national news services made it appear that the perp had sprayed the scene with a fully automatic assault weapon.

There is a inconvenient fact that just won't go away: the city's and states that have enacted the most stringent gun control laws have the worst crime records. Chicago, Washington DC, etc. Just keep in mind that it's the people behind the guns that are the real problem. A gun is just a tool and would be replaced by some other tool if one is really bent on killing. If we rounded up every single gun that is owned by this country's citizens, the bad guys would still have guns and be infinitely more powerful due to the fact they don't need to be concerned about meeting someone with an "equalizer". Consider Mexico's experience. Their gun laws are draconian but the murder and violence rates are off the charts.

It has been my experience that the inspectors tend to remove most of the components from the various pockets of my camera bag. The trouble is when they stuff it all back in to the bag it is completely mixed up, which makes it difficult to determine if everything has been put back in. I have lost battery charger components, cables, and other small items several times in the checking process. I have found it helpful to combine similar items and pack those small items in zip-Lock plastic baggies to keep them from going astray. Also try to be at the table where the inspectors are doing the inspection so you can watch for items that may be left behind when they are re-packing your bag.

A fetus is not a child. It is a promise of a child to the parents. But the amount of abortions pales in comparison to the amount of life crime, disease, poverty and war takes. Where are the priorities?

That "promise of a child" has a heart beat, feels pain, and many believe has a soul. One can be arrested and prosecuted for killing kittens or puppies but killing unborn children is acceptable. Go figure

As a point of fact re WW2: The was no "Air Force" as a separate branch of service until 1951. Prior to that time we had the Army Air Corp, and the Marines had their own Air Corp, (remember Pappy Boyington and the Black Sheeps Corsairs?) and of course we had the Naval Air Arm. Re "slogging": it is an appropriate description and not a bit negative ( as in slogging through snow and mud) Our boys did plenty of that going through Europe as well as the jungles of the Pacific Islands etc.
Hope this info might help the conversation.
