Yes, you and I know that software ships with the camera but some of my members don't realize what it is for. who knows what they think it is, the manual on disk?...or even if they can find it.

I believe the term originates with Photojournalists and Street Photographers. It generally refers to a fast lens like a 24/70mm f2.8 that can deal with "come what may". Yes it is a lens that can handle most scenes found on the street where you don't know what you will find of interest.

I read where it is a good practice to tape over the name on the camera. Also there is a company making a camera strap with a cut resistant inner line that can not be sliced in a common cut grab and run theft.

Does your camera have auto ISO. if so set it to Auto. set your camera to manual and your shutter to 1/250 or higher and open your lens wide open. Shoot at will and the ISO will rise and fall to balance your exposure. You may have some noise which you can work on in post but you will stop action.

I think an earlier comment that Adams did not add anything he just printed from his negative is a bit short sighted. A technique of printing directly from the negative is a contact print. Adams added his controlled application of light through the negative to the paper to create what he saw in his minds eye. Today he would use Lightroom to create his image/art. You could say when he captured the light coming through his lens was half the job. The other half was controlling the light coming out the lens.

Thanks all, I find value in these posts. As I try to digest all of this I categorize the information on process for my own understanding as this: TAKING a photograph - all care in achieving a straight photo. MAKING a photograph, Lightroom corrections to Raw. CRAFTING a Photograph - Photoshop. Beyond that are the Painterly effects and others which I feel are more Illustration than Photography.

The various movements in the history of photography have gems that can I pluck and use as I develop my photographers eye and advance my own work. I do not defend or rebuke any works but I do discriminate to my taste. Great thread which provokes thought. Always a good thing. JB

I saw the Long totally manual Rokinon 650-1300 tele at a camera store and they let me take it outside to test. I was very impressed at how clear some very far buildings were. They showed me clear and sharp prints from the lens. It only cost a few hundred dollars and it is fitted with a mount adapter for most all brands. Old school tech. manual focus, manual aperture keeps the cost low. Maybe you can find some results of this low priced lens.

If you are not looking to enlarge your prints beyond 11X14 check out this extensive review.https://ndktravels.wordpress.com/2013/05/10/rokinon-super-telephoto-great-deal-or-gigantic-dud/

The name 47th street camera was once well trusted. Current owner/management must be viewed skeptically.

Both brands make excellent cameras. I chose Nikon because you can put all your money into getting the best quality camera you can buy and then you can pick up CHEAP excellent lenses from the 70's all manual lenses to auto focus film era lens which sell for little and have excellent glass. Canon does not accept their own older lens as they changed their mount. Better Nikon cameras will meter old fully manual lenses and even tell you when you are in focus. Since shooting in Manual is something you should learn, what is not to love!
Best of luck.

Canon and Nikon make great cameras. I will not direct you to either one. I use Nikon myself. I would ask you to consider forgoing a "bundle" and see what your money will buy for a camera alone. Some Credit cards like Discover will double the Manufacturers Guarantee. I do not buy service agreements. If an electronic device like a digital camera will have a problem most will surface in the first 90 days. If you buy the best camera you can, you can get started. batteries and lenses will come as you need them. Also consider Manufacturer Refurbished if a better camera is in reach. If you can move to a pro-sumer model over a consumer model you will not regret it.
