I am very new into photography. (Taking an online class and using a 15 year old Canon Powershot S3 IS). I have been shopping around for a new camera and just saw a Black Friday ad for the following 2 cameras. I am wondering what you knowledgeable photographers think would be a better deal. I really enjoy outdoor photography.

1. Canon T6, with a EF-S 18-55mm IS II lens and EF 75-300mm III lens. Price $449.00
2. Nikon D3400, with a 18-55mm lens and 70-300mm AF-S DX NIKKOR Lens, extra battery and 2 yr service contract

Thank you for your thoughts and opinions.

I would prefer the Nikon. But think both will do well for you.

If you are looking at Canon T6 and not the T6i you will have a good deal more resolution in the Nikon. Dynamic range is also better. This makes the Nikon better for landscapes and still photography.

One trick these kinds of ads pull is to get you to buy without being aware that they are dumping an undesirable telephoto lens on you. Don't know about the Canon but the Nikon probably doesn't have VR, which would be something you should have in this day and age.

Both are great entry level cameras. If you plan to also shoot video, the Canon has a bit of an edge. Otherwise, it's mostly preference. Actually getting your hands on each might help you decide.

The two cameras provide IS / VR enabled 18-55 lenses and non stabilized zoom lenses. Both are essentially the same offer. You should try handling both at say Best Buy or similar and see of one feels better in your hands than the other.

I have a t6 and my wife has a Nikon d5200. We both bought a manual telephoto lens. My t6 will meter with the manual lens but my lens but the Nikon will not because it's designed to get information from the lens. So if you get the Nikon you will have to stick with more expensive lenses if it works like the 5200.

I agree with Chg Canon. Both are fine cameras and either will make you happy. But, if you have the chance, go hold each one first. Bet you find one will feel better to your grip.

Unfortunately, Nikon eliminated the ultrasonic sensor cleaner in the D3400. All of Nikon's recent DSLR cameras have had that feature. Those darned dust bunnies might start appearing in photos. Also, its built-in flash has only one-half the power of the flash in the D3300. They seem to be trying to cut costs a lot lately. I would search for a new D3300. Amazon might still have some new D3300's. Otherwise, you might consider going to a Nikon D5xxx series camera. If you get a D3400 be sure to purchase a good filtered blower for it. I have the Koh Global Hepa Jet Air II blower. It has a large hepa filter, an anti-static filter, a one-way check valve, and a medical grade PVC bulb. Many blowers the have a rubber bulb can shed fine particles that will end up on your sensor. The PVC bulb won't do that. Adorama Camera carries it and you can order it directly from Koh Global.

A lot of kit lenses have plastic lens mounts. That's where I draw the line. I've heard people say that the plastic mounts are durable enough. I'm not sure. I always purchase lenses that have a metal mount. You might buy just the camera body and get lenses separately.

I "fell" for the Nikon bundle. I think it is a great deal. It is plastic and an easy weight to carry. The shorter zoom is a great little lens, the longer zoom HAS NO VR! See if you can work a deal on swapping that out for a lens with the VR, it should cost less than $80 more. My camera store didn't stock the boxed package, the way Costco does, so if I had known that the lens is VERY difficult to hold at above 200 mm (it is a crop sensor so 200 is already Higher). I also got around that by purchasing a monopod to carry in my bag, that costs as much. Also be careful, although the Costco package contains an extra battery, and it is a Nikon battery and fully compatable, the spare given to me by my local store would not work. The camera told me it was not compatable! That also cost me $15 in a "trade." I added a 50 mm 1.8 prime lens for portraits, it is a wonderful lens.

Is you are serious about getting into photography and plan to learn how to do it right and feel you may have been bitten by the photo bug, and most importantly, can afford more than $500, don't waste your money on either entry level camera. The T6 is the base DSLR from Canon and the D3400 is the base model from Nikon. A comparison of the two; the Nikon offers you slightly more features and better resolution than the Canon and the D3400 is a newer model. The Canon is better built than the Nikon and so are the lenses, although there's really nothing wrong with the Nikon build quality, the Canon is just better. The extended warranty offered on the Nikon is probably not a Nikon USA factory warranty and the extra battery is more than likely a cheap, as in not a good, aftermarket battery. The Canon is probably an easier camera to learn and use but in all honesty, the Nikon gives you more for the money. If you really are serious about learning and doing photography and can afford to spend more, consider a Canon 80D or a Nikon D7500 and start out with a decent quality, versatile zoom lens that will give you good coverage. Yes, this will cost you more initially but, if your serious and you develop a passion like oh so many others have, you will be wanting to upgrade in a really short time, so why not start out with the camera you would probably upgrade to anyway. Also, even though Canon is the biggest fish in the camera pond and Nikon is the next biggest fish, there are a whole lot of other quality fish swimming in the photography equipment pond. Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Fujifilm, Sigma, Panasonic, Yashica, Casio just to name a few. They don't all make DSLR'S anymore but in the interchangeable lens category, Mirrorless cameras are right up there with DSLR'S; and there are also some amazing Bridge cameras to choose from if you don't have to have an interchangeable lens camera. I personally own Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony DSLR and Bridge cameras. Don't have a Mirrorless yet, but I'm looking...
If your choice is just the T6 or D3400 and you have no plans to go beyond that, get the D3400.

I would say both are excellent. I would go with the T6i if budget would allow though.
The 3400 I believe is the latest Nikon offering where the T6 is a bit old. So not a real comparison except for price.
So in your budget the Nikon easily wins as a newer camera.

If you haven't had a new camera in 15 years, any of the choices you selected will certainly be an upgrade. I would prefer a D3300 bundle deal over the D3400. Both Canon and Nikon will serve you well.

I have a Canon T5 and I love it. It's very versatile and makes great pics with a variety of lenses. Mine also came with extra lenses and they do a fine job also. The price is great also.
