Great pic. Male raptors are generally smaller than females, but otherwise fairly difficult to sex.

Part of the consideration should include where you will be birding. If you are going to be concentrating on shorebirds, look at 10X binoculars. They will give you the reach you need for the distances normally found when you look for shorebirds. If you are going to be looking at woodland birds, consider 7X or 8X since they will tend to allow you to focus quicker and be lighter so that you can find the birds that will normally be moving faster. I personally use 10X42 and my wife prefers 8X32.

Just remember, a "clear"test today does not mean you wont get exposed tomorrow. Keep safe.

Birds will frequently lose their tails during an encounter with a predator. The tail feathers are more loosely attached so that they will pull out if the bird is attacked. It takes just a few weeks to regrow the tail feathers, but the birds seem to have little problem flying in the meantime. Better to loose a few feathers than their life.

I love the snow, the more the better. I am retired and I love to think about the poor suckers that still have to go to work. The snow in my driveway and sidewalks will melt soon.

Thanks for all the replies. After reviewing your comments and talking to a camera store owner, he has decided to go in a different direction. Thanks again, Bill

My son is interested in getting digital camera binoculars for travel. The only comments I have found on this site are several years old. I would be interested if anyone has first hand knowledge of the the current offerings, good or bad. Thanks in advance. Bill

Welcome. That's quite a first post. I don't know if you know what you have but #3 is an Aplomado Falcon. Very rare and a great photo of one. Congratulations. I would give my favorite lens for a photo like that...well maybe not, but I might loan it.

Yes, I am aware that #3 is an Aplomado Falcon. My friend and I actually found her several miles west of its normal range. She was a second year female based on her bands (not shown in my picture) but identified by the banders.

Sorry, but I don't know how to make them downloadedable. I'll check into that.

Here are a few of the pictures I have taken here in Virginia and in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

I have lurked here for a couple months and thought I should introduce myself. I am retired (read as old) and like to take pictures of birds as well as band birds in the spring. Have not been able to get out much to take pictures lately due to family health issues, but hope to start contributing in the near future.
