Last September, a couple of months after my wife passed away, I realized I needed to get away for awhile. So, I ran away from home. Some of the hogs were nice enough to help me with my travel spots, and I took off for a couple of weeks of isolation and photography. First stop was in South Dakota at the Badlands. From there to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. Next was Colorado National Monument, and then on to Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. At that point I was ready to start the trip home, so I kept heading south because I had to see Monument Valley. I was able to get some shots of some amazing places, and it convinced me to run away from home again later this year. I’m now in the planning process of mapping out the trip. There is a highway (US Highway 191) that runs from the Canadian border in MT to the Mexican border in AZ. I’m hoping to make that trip in September as long as the travel and visiting restrictions are lifted. I’ve never been to Yellowstone or Grand Teton or Jackson Hole. And I want to spend a couple of days at Monument Valley and several other spots along the way. My last trip I stayed in hotels. This year I plan on mixing hotel stays with some car camping and bought a new SUV to help with that. Thanks for listening and viewing my photos.

I've lived in the Milwaukee area for over 30 years and just found out that there are Osprey here, and have been for years. My ignorance showing that I thought these birds wouldn't be seen here. So we finally had a really nice sunny day here and 75 degrees, and I was just stoked to get out of the house and get some shots. I like these.

What the SuperflyTNT went through is something that I have done many times. So, here's a question that I have. How do you (do you?) reset your camera after/before a shoot? Do you reset it back to some type of neutral setting afterwards, or just set it up prior to a shoot based on conditions, composition, etc? I have done the same thing a bunch of times: forgotten that I have bracketing set up and then can't figure out why my photos are so screwed up. Or had some other setting on like exposure compensation. I would be interested in hearing what people do.

This guy has been teasing me for about 2 weeks. He would land in a tree outside my back door and look at me at then take off after about 10 seconds. Well, I was ready for him today. What's great is that my Grandson's name is Cooper... D500, Tamron 18-400.

Uhhh the manufacturer puts them on for a reason. There are more reasons to use them then to not use them. I add a lens keeper to every lens cap and keep the lenses in a cover when not in use. The exception is to those lenses stored in their original boxes when not in the field bag. All lenses stored in a temperature stable closet.

Yes, thanks, you’re right. Lesson learned.

Unless the smart tv comes with a "special" included in its purchase price, you will still need to pay for streaming such as Amazon Prime or Netflix. I cancelled cable tv in the spring and tried Hulu, then You-Tube TV. I liked You-Tube TV best because of the number of sports channels. It is $50/mo + sales tax and has free DVR. I have fast internet so rarely have I noticed any issues whether watching live or recorded. It offers about 70 tv channels and includes my local NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox; however, I can also get those local channels quite clearly with a $23 antenna from amazon

And yes, there are restrictions for number of users and their locations, so research what works best for you. When you first set up the television, it will look for your wi fi signal, then have you log in, just as you would with a new computer. After that, you're all set other than initial set-up for whichever streaming service you use.

Ditto to what LINDA said. I’ve been a YouTube TV subscriber for about 6 months, after trying Hulu, and I really like it. Another feature is that it’s portable. By using Roku, on a recent road trip, I was able to connect to hotel tv’s that had decent internet service, and still had access to my recorded shows.

Very sorry to read you have lost your wife. I can only imagine what a difficult time this must be for you. And I apologize if this has already been asked and answered (we're now on page 5) but what will you be driving? If you are in something sturdy (truck or SUV) consider the road less traveled to Cathedral Valley in Capital Reef NP. I've been there twice (both times in October) and it is on the top of my list of places I have been. But the road is rough. Unlike many NPs this part of Capital Reef is nearly empty of people. But the rock formations and cliffs are amazing. Google it and see what you think. It would be quite an adventure if you are feeling adventurous.

I have a Ford Edge. Thanks for the suggestions. The way my trip is working out, I am going to Capitol Reef and have some free time there. Will check it out.

One thing I did not anticipate is how crowded it will be in the Moab area, among others, during that first weekend in Oct. I’ve encountered a number of booked hotels and hotels that have more than doubled theirs rates for the weekend. So I will be staying in some interesting places. BUT, I am totally looking forward to the adventure. I leave 1 week from today!

Nine-year old grandson in first game of the fall season. Nikon d500, Tamron 18-400mm lens. For sports, I like to shoot manual, so this shot was 185 mm, 1/800 sec., auto iso (450), f6.0

My sincere thanks to everyone who has responded. The ideas have been great and I’m going to use a bunch of them for my trip. Maybe I’ll be gone 6 weeks! And I also truly appreciate the kind thoughts and condolences that people have sent. It’s these kinds of things that bring me back to this forum every day. Thanks a ton!

You are about 20 miles from Crazy Horse Memorial when at Rushmore and we saw more animals on the Wildlife Loop road in Custer Park than we saw at Yellowstone. And remember to buy a yearly National Park pass at Badlands (or your first entry), all other national entries will be free. (Believe pass was $20, cheaper than the single entry into Badlands).

Thanks, great ideas. I bought a lifetime senior pass to the national parks about 4 years ago. I think it was $10.

Weather will be a consideration this time of year. Southwest is pleasant, but as you gain in elevation or go north you can encounter snow and ice. Grand Canyon north rim is nice and different than south rim. The Grand Circle is a nice goal, we did it over several trips. https://grandcircle.org/national-parks

This is a great website. Thanks!

That sounds like a really good trip to blow the cobwebs from the brain. The more hiking you do (even if not the hard stuff), the better you'll be and the better your pictures will be. Don't forget Deadhorse Point State Park. In Monument Valley you can do the drive yourself, which is a real plus as you can stop when, where and for as long as you want. However, if you do a tour, you get to see places you can't go to on your own. I would do both, if you have the time.

Great ideas. Thanks.

That's actually on my mind for the return. If I still have some energy, I'm going south through AZ and hope to drive some of RT 66. Thanks.
