I've heard that Nikon is going to put a call/text feature in their next upgrade to the D850. The model nomenclature is still under consideration. Though rumor has it the camera will be branded D850cp.

I love it! I had a good long laugh!

Is it really necessary? Don't all new cameras come with their own software to make basic edits on its RAW files and then save to a TIFF? Or is the manufacturer's software too basic to be useful?

You can certainly download software to do some basic post processing from the camera manufacturer’s website. Canon’s is OK and I sometimes use it for quick touch ups when I download to my laptop. I had to upgrade my Paint Shop Pro on my desktop to be able to read newer Canon RAW files.

I haven’t taken the plunge yet for PS or LR yet but I’m sure you have to get new plugins to work on newer RAW files.!

Chris - I have limited experience with forums to match my even more limited experience with photography. I enjoyed some of the thought-provoking questions you asked and it sometimes sent me looking through my owners manuals, photography books, or some of the links that Jerryc41 provides. Some of the reactions to the questions or responses clearly reminded me that if I want validation for work, my opinions, my choice of camera, lenses, or photography budget, a forum is the absolute last place to get it.

That said, I was not offended, I’m glad you’re here, I look forward to reading great tutorials in the Commercial section.

Peace Brother ✌️

Good Heavens, Sir! You're a veritable encyclopedia of links information. I salute you! I'm not being sarcastic; you've been much more than just helpful to me and to the UHH forum with your contributions. I've been wanting to ask you, though: How do you find the time to do it on such a large scale?

Jerryc41 is an excellent source of info and always provides helpful links, but this time I have to respectfully differ with his statement that a “lens is just a lens.”

I have found a noticeable difference when I use “good glass”. I would also suggest a fast fixed lens, maybe 35 or 50 mm, for even crisper images and creamier background blur.

Just my 2 cents. Have fun.

Yes a camera is only as good as the lens attached. I’m excited by any new to me camera gear I buy, but I find Jerryc41 is correct- it’s simply more fun and exciting to buy a new camera. You have to learn new menus and figure out new button locations.
But better lenses and more practice helps me improve much more than a new camera.

I taught myself PSP years ago at work. I got a home version free with a Dell desktop and did buy an upgrade this Spring when I took delivery of my camera. I had to use Corel Support for AfterShot, which did help but seemed to take awhile using email. I’d give Corel a B- for their effort.

I’m certainly not a fan of subscription licenses, I much prefer pay once and get free patches and discounted upgrades, but unfortunately most software other than the OS have moved to either yearly or monthly subscriptions. I guess consumers hate big up-front costs. If I’m forced into subscriptions, I’d prefer once a year to a monthly subscription. I mean cripeys, it’s like the stinking cable bill!!!!

Oh well, I’ll just go back to sipping my coffee and muttering to myself crap like “old school rules”.

I have the 80D and do transfer through WiFi using my home network to my laptop. I use the EOS software for the transfer and then the photos are available to whatever PP I want.

A cable is faster and using the card reader in the laptop is the fastest. The reason I frequently use WiFi is I’m not physically moving the SD card and I’m not constantly plugging and unplugging a cable to the camera. Maybe I’m nuts but it’s less wear and tear IMHO.

If I’m going to download a lot of shots then I’ll use the card reader.

I’ve seen some videos that show you can use the camera as an WiFi access point but I haven’t done that yet.

I have been a serious photographer for more than 60 years, developing film in my bathroom in trays before tanks were common. I use FF cameras for my professional work, Sony mirrorless cameras for fun, BUT my iPhone 7Plus is always with me and a wonderful CAMERA to have for immediacy. The results are incredible. Don't knock it. The florals were shot at my local supermarket and the portrait of Shecky Greene was at a breakfast.

Very nicely done and very nicely said!

I know it's me, but I find the manual a bit confusing. I find that you folks provide guidance that are easier to understand.

I will have to spend time going over the manual.

Thanks

You might try David Busch’s manual for the Canon 7DIi. His explanations of all the menus and settings are very good and MUCH easier to understand than the owners manual.

My 13 year old granddaughter, Fiona, inherited her mom™s IPhone a little more than a year ago, and she has really gotten involved with the camera aspects of it. She posts some of her photos on Instagram and I am impressed with her self-developed talent. She does not know that I copied the attached photos from Instagram. Occasionally, she will search the Internet for an appropriate quote and include it with the photo she posted. The photo with the eyes included the quote: œBehind the most beautiful eyes lay secrets deeper and darker than the mysterious sea.
I have been a member of Ugly Hedgehog for several years and know that members are always eager to offer suggestions and assistance. I am looking for your help into how I can help Fionas photography talent continue to grow. Right now, school and field hockey are keeping her busy, and soon basketball will replace field hockey, but I assure you that her Iphone is always close at hand. So please, if you have ideas on tutorials, challenges, books or websites that will help her continue her photography skills, I am listening. If you wish please email me at rgsidder@yahoo.com.
Thank you so much.

Great composition! I keep seeing in Facebook ads telling me the secrets to iPhone photography so you can do a search in Facebook and Twitter for “iPhone Photography” and they’ll be links to free tips and tricks, like using the volume buttons on the headphones as a remote shutter if your phone is on a tripod.

I really wish you and Fiona all the best!

I upgraded to IOS 11 because I’m slightly impulsive. Since my desktop and laptop are Windows which isn’t HEIF compatible yet, I went to Settings, Camera, then unchecked High Efficiency and then checked Most Compatible. So now, the few photos taken with my iPhone will be saved as jpeg.

If I were a camera....I’d be a Canon T3i, middle aged, middle weight, with a 18-55 kit lens, spending most of my time in a small nylon camera bag that’s somewhat frayed. I’d be dreaming of my glory days when I was taken everywhere and loved. I’d also be dreaming of shooting a Hasselblad catalogue with a gorgeous medium format H6D, or a Leica catalog with a beautiful Leica centerfold.

I didn't buy my 5DSR or my 5DIV because I needed them. I bought them because of their features and capabilities. I didn't intend to get a 5DSR until I saw in person the mind boggling detail and resolution the camera is capable of. The 5DSR is a really nice camera but it's not intended to be a daily shooter. You can use it that way but it can be frustrating. That's why I got the 5DIV. It's not finicky like the 5DSR can be and its got 4K video frame capture. That's like having virtual 30 frames per second plus it has some nice features that I know I will use like built-in time lapse.

I was just doing a fun one-up to
Kmgw9v’s “I need a 850”.
I have more than enough camera and lenses as I’m learning/ relearning photography and consider myself quite blessed. This topic and thread made me remember that there’s something almost magical when the big brown truck pulls up with our new gear. Just like a kid whose opening his/her new toy, big smiles, hands almost trembling. It’s just fun! Doesn’t matter if we need it or if it will improve our shots, it’s just fun playing with a new camera or lens. Which is exactly what Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, Fuji are counting on and bottom lines depend on.

I shoot and print , larger images landscapes and birds mainly. I started with a d300 now have a d7100 for 2 years, and a d810 for about 6 the past 6 months .It is the images I shot from the d300 early on that has paid the way for most everything else . There are a halve dozen from the d300 that always sell at about $ 225 dollars each at art shows their IQ is about 24 x 36 I rarely go over unless it's the stitched landscape at 20 x 50 . And it was only 12.3 megapixels. There are 3 from the d7100 with one of an egret at 18 x 42 almost life size that sell well none off the d810 yet , only from lack of travel to sites yet . Fall and spring will be good sunsets here in Florida with a trip to Gatorland in St . Augistine . So it seems the same images keep selling because of content not tech. I also print for an artist that uses a Nikon zoom that has a zoom that goes to like 1400 mm and he has about 12 images that constantly sell at every art show locally and has an itty bitty sensor and the two biggest images I print for him is a row of 6 turtles 16 x 48 and 18 x 60. The biggest that he sells that I print is a 40 x 60 of rainbow springs 3 so far . He out sells all of us with a $ 500. Camera I think it's a p520 or something like that .Since I work on his images we have convinced him to purchase a sony rx10 iii .he has trouble with focus acquisitions and still carries the smaller camera ,and only uses the sony rx10iii after shooting with the Nikon. So it's the image and content that sells not the technology. And of coarse the eye of the Artist..

Many years ago, when I was exploring what hobby I might like, a friend told me to take up golfing. My reply was, oh no, I've been around golfers and the sport is much too expensive. I'm going to take up photography ... SIGH!

Most hobbies are designed to be expensive. Golf, fishing, photography, shooting, skiing, playing a musical instrument (unless it’s a washboard), horses, flying radio controlled planes, crafts such as woodworking. I guess a fixed income in retirement keeps us out of debtor’s prison.
