A few days ago my Corel Paintshop Pro X8 stopped working. I would click on the PSP icon and nothing would happen. I tried to import a photo into PSP and it would not work.

Finally, I contacted customer support at Corel. After I told them I had cleared my cache and browsing history, they gave me a link to help me with my problem. The link sent me to a page that guides you to update to version 2018. When I told that to customer support, they suggested that was the only way to fix my problem. 2018 is "more stable," according to the cs representative.

I became really frustrated. All they wanted was for me to pay them $80 to upgrade to the newest version of PSP. They were not interested at all in helping solve my problem.

BTW, last night, my PSP suddenly started working. Go figure!

Some customer support is good, and some is a cash machine. Thanks for the info. You should email them a copy of your post.

I may do that! Hopefully I can find the posting. I purchased the software around six months ago...before the 2018 version. They are trying to tell me it is so defective, I HAVE to purchase the newest version.

Typical computer software company BS. Adobe told me that the Photoshop CS6 Extended that I just purchased at the time would not run on MS Windows VISTA. Solely of course since MS stopped supporting their own S/O as it was trouble plagued. Right on Adobe's box it clearly stated "for Windows XP, 7, 8, & 8.1". Makes no sense that a program would not run on an O/S than comes between others. I of course installed it and it ran fine on VISTA, it also runs flawlessly with Windows 10. I've avoided the subscription thus far.

I don't care for subscription software. There is something about having the "real product" accessible to you. In a subscription setup, I don't feel like I really own the product. Reminds me of leasing a car.

I'm very surprised at Corel. I had that software when i had a PC. I use a Mac now so i can't get their software. Maybe that's a good thing.

It's been a couple of years, but my experience with Corel support has always been excellent.

I doubt that emailing them will do anything more than make you feel better. But if it does that, go for it.

While I understand your sentiment, you should at least be aware that you don't in fact "own" any of the software you use now... when you paid the $99 (or whatever) what you paid for was the license giving you the right to use the manufacturer's software. And that's the case for all the software you have, from the OS to word processors to post processing.

The difference is the payment scheme- with subscription based software you still download the program to your local machine; it just "checks in" with headquarters on occasion (I think the time period is 45 days with Adobe CC) to ensure you're paid up.

This trend (and I'm no fan of it either) will only continue; from the software providor's point of view subscriptions ensure a stable monthly revenue stream, which any company prefers to the normal vicissitudes of heavy and light sales periods. They also like this model as it pretty much keeps all customers on the same version (since part of the deal is you simply download upgrades as they become available), making support less of a headache.

What happens to your Adobe program if you stop making payments??? I don't OWN my editing program, but I have paid for the license to use it and I can continue using it, without upgrades, forever.

It still works of course, but it does not technically belong to you

Not much to with photography really, but I used to be an avid fan of Corel WordPerfect.
Till it seemed to send the cursor to where it wanted in the document, not where I wanted it.
Phoned Corel, explained in detail what was happening. The response, 'It doesn't do that on my computer.' That was the last time I used a Corel product. No using Office Libre. Bonus: it's free.

You obviously have never read the fine print. You have never owned the product, regardless of where you bought it or how much you paid for it.

From what I understand, the subscription model works just like a subscription to a newspaper or magazine: You stop paying, you no longer get the paper or magazine. You stop paying the subscription for an Adobe program, it stops working.

At one time Word Perfect was an independent company, and a favorite amongst Higher Education users. Once MS moved to WYSIWYG, WP couldn't keep up, and Corel ended up owning the remnants - which were hardly worth owning.
