Thank you all for the responses. I appreciate everyone taking the time to give their thoughts and experiences with this lens. I am leaning towards it but have to consult my piggybank!
Treepusher, I hope you're not holding your breath!

Word on the street is that, starting tomorrow, 'Winter Hell' will be withdrawn from the big screen and the long-awaited 'Spring Dreams' will be released for general viewing.
Pretty scene. Wish it were my backyard. Today might the first day of spring but all our snow and cold temps say otherwise! 10 degrees F. here this morning. Hard for any snow melt with those temps!

Very pretty Angler. I'm not sure I'll ever see green again after our winter. Still lots of snow on the ground here in Maine. I dare say I will have snow in the shady corners of my yard until May.

You never know! I had a Northern Saw-whet owl in my backyard a couple of weeks ago. Never, ever expected to see one in the wild let alone in my backyard. Then three days ago I had another one. Assuming it was the same one or it's mate but I will never know.
Hi Saleavitt! I just got this lens last summer. I traded the old 80-400 in on it. It is an awesome lens. I just posted a bunch of birds I took with it. I use it on my D300s and the D600. And yes you can use the TC's and get good shots. I use the 1.4 and the 1.7 all the time if I need the reach. You will really enjoy how fast it focuses!
You have a scenic route home. Love the pic with the Aspens standing up nice and tall. How come you have so little snow at your elevation? I am a little jealous!
