Thinking of getting this lens while Nikon still has the rebates on lenses. Anyone want to share their experience, pros/cons of this lens. Will be used on both DX & FX formats for birds and wildlife. TC recommendations/experiences?
Thanks for any input.

It's a variable aperture lens, no thank you.

Ken Rockwell says it's a miracle lens, and that was the older version.

Hi
I have just purchased the D810 this week (have been hankering after it for a while) so it has only just come out of the box. I did purchase with it the 3.5-5.6 70-300mm just to get me started so to speak on the FX lens range. Whilst I was purchasing it the chap standing next to me purchased the 400mm version as he had tried it out already and was delighted with it, it was a little out of my budget area so went for the 300mm and the 24-70 f2.8 (sigma). I love the fast lenses but one can only spend so much in one go so I had to be satisfied for now with my purchase. I have taken a few practice shots and they look OK in camera, will let you know when I finally get to upload them to the Mac.
Can anyone give me some advice on if I can swap and use the FX lenses on a DX and visa versa as I have quite a few for the D300 DX and, as mentioned, it will take time to acquire the F2.8s over time.

At the very top of your screen is a "search" feature. Type in Nikon 80 - 400 and you will get a dozen or more threads to sift through - many with your same exact question.

You can manually set your FX camera to DX format, or set it to automatically switch when a DX lens is mounted. FX lenses will also work fine on your DX camera.
I used this lens in costa rica with a 1.4x converter I did have to increase the ISO to get the speeds I wanted.
Thanks mborn. Great hummer shot. Was it a Nikon TC or some other brand?

Thanks for the link Jerry. I'll take a look at his review.
Have fun with your new setup! Post some pics when you can!

Hi Saleavitt! I just got this lens last summer. I traded the old 80-400 in on it. It is an awesome lens. I just posted a bunch of birds I took with it. I use it on my D300s and the D600. And yes you can use the TC's and get good shots. I use the 1.4 and the 1.7 all the time if I need the reach. You will really enjoy how fast it focuses!

Thanks for the 411 on the lens and TC's Erv.
