Not true in all cases. Or better put: yes, if you pay for it, you do get it.

My wife and I are planning about a week in Charleston, SC in mid June. She has been there once and I have never been. Looking for suggestions for photo opportunities, historical sites, breath taking scenery, etc.

Best sections of town to stay in for both quality of life and safety if we wander out, especially at night....

Interested in history of area both nautical and land based and photographing same. My experience with tour buses in other places is that I don't get good shooting opportunities--people in the way and the buses go too fast!

Walking tours ok if not too long. She is late 60's and I am 70 and it will be hot there so walking cannot be terribly far in the heat.

Wondering if horse drawn carriage rides would be good or if they are too crowded. Slower and smaller group I would hope than a bus, etc.

Also wondering about places to simply drive the rental car to and from, etc.

Suggestions as to what not to miss as well as any tourist traps to avoid would be most appreciated.

Primary interest is photographing the historical sites, landscapes, seascapes, etc.

Am planning to take my Canon 5DIII and three lenses: a 16-35 f4L, a 24-105 f4L and a 70-300 f4-5.6L. Probably throw in my f1.8 nifty-fifty for night time and a monopod. Is this overkill? If so which lenses to take and which to leave at home? All will be carried in quality Lowe Pro back pack with hip straps to transfer weight to my hips and off my shoulders. Will also likely take my Sony RX10 III (f2.5-4, 24mm-600mm) and as over all backup. Would not be carrying both cameras at the same time though. That way if the Canon gets too heavy, I could always fall back on the Sony.

I realize this has become long. If you are still with me, please give me your thoughts and the benefits of your experiences. Thanks to all!

Tom

My late uncle had as a hobby taking vacation photos and making puzzles out of them. I have never seen them but family speaks highly about them and I just bought a scroll saw on impulse and thought I would try and learn to make them for the grandchildren. I want to use wood rather than paper and while I think I can dive in and do it, I thought that many of you may know a good process or have tips on types of wood, glue etc. that will save me lots of trials and errors.

I would appreciate any tips anyone can offer. Thanks!

I have a small spot of dust on the mirror of my D500. It is definitely on the mirror, not the sensor, and I know it will have no effect on my images. My problem is being slightly OCD, it annoys me. My options are to carefully clean it, have it cleaned professionally (but I do not want to spend $100 on if that’s what it would cost), or get over it and just live with it. Recommendations?

1.remove lens
2. hold camera upside down
3. use one of these and gently blow out obstruction

Having never used a program
More complicated than Google Photos or Windows Photo ( whatever the name is as I mentioned I’m lazy ) I’m ready to start using either late room or one of the HDR pro tools that I’ve seen for about $99. My camera will not do HDR in the camera so I’m gonna need something to do a little more enhancement. I guess I should bite the bullet and try the nine dollar a month Adobe trial but the learning curve looks so damn steep. Is the best way just to do this to bite the bullet and start watching YouTube tutorials.

I started by getting the photographers package that includes lightroom CC an Photoshop CC for $10.00 a month, they also throw in RAW.
I, like you, went and am still going through a sharp learning curve. But both programs have EXCELLENT tutorials that take you one step, utube offers 1000's of additional tutorials. I took an evening class on Photoshop and plan to take a lot more.
Some of the tools are easy and effective, one of my first and most important tools was the Healing Brush, you can really do a lot with this guy and it will instantly improve some of your shots.
So, yes, it is a learning PROCESS, get started and you won't be sorry.

Have any forum members had experiences with Hoodman Raw Steel SD cards? I did a search on the Hedgehog site and couldn't find any comments.

*Ruggedized and Steel-Plated
*Reinforced internal housing structure that protects sensitive flash components from harm
*World's only Steel Plated/Ruggedized SDHC Card
*Waterproof
*Lifetime warranty

(from Amazon description)

When the ad says lifetime warranty, are they talking about the steel plated unit itself or the memory it contains?

I was wondering. I have shot with a Nikon FE and like the results. What Nikon DSLR is most like the FE? Or does it really matter?

The most digital look alike to the Nikon FE would be the Nikon Df. But this camera is two generations old already but their users are very loyal and sing it's praises from the highest places.
But, if your considering a DSLR camera, I would strongly suggest the Nikon D500 or one of the latest Z camera's.

Does anyone have a suggestion for disposal of not very useful camera equipment. I have several cameras and lenses which would not be of interest to anyone who has expectations around his/her images and younger generations do not shoot all that much other than with a mobile phone. I am on the verge of throwing them out. Thanks.

Even if they are film camera's check with local high schools and see if they want or can use them. Also check with any local camera clubs.
I know of many churches on Cape Code that have perpetual rummage sales and use the proceeds to help the unfortunate. See if any churches in your area do the same.

So I currently shoot with the Panasonic g85 with an Olympus 75-300 ii lense. I am having a bit of an issue with seen things thru the viewfinder. An example would be looking at a bird in the bushes and the shot looks fine to me. My brother looks at that same bird and he can see a twig up in front of the bird. He is using the Fuji XT3 with a 100-400mm lens. So we both are at the 600mm equivalent but when I look thru his camera I see a lot more details thru the viewfinder that I do not see in mine.

Now to my Nikon question, I have a chance to pick up a D300s for less than $100 dollars from a friend who does not use it anymore. I thought about picking up a 300mm f4 prime lense as they are selling for 400 to 800 dollars.

What I want to know from the Nikon shooter is whether this camera is still relevant in 2019, yes I know it is 12MP but that does not matter to me my old Canon 20d was less than that but still produced beautiful images.

Thanks for any input, I have just never even held a Nikon and looking for advice.

The 300 f4 on the D300 would give you a field of view of 450mm, not bad.
As for photographing birds in the bush, also remember to shoot single spot focus and put that single spot right on the bird.
I owned the D300 for several years before upgrading to the D7000 series camera's, then finally to the D500 (which many folks thought was an upgraded D300).

I just purchased a new Olympus E-M1-II. As my Pen F it had no include a full manual with it. My Nikons do.

Why can't a manufacture produce an included manual with such an expensive product? I know there manuals are not perfect; yet, they are very useful and can't cost that much to produce. Are the makers just that greedy and selfish? I find it absurd.

Unfortunately many manufactures have moved their manuals to the internet. You can download it easily anytime you want. In fact, I put my Nikon manuals on my phone for easy reference.
But, I, like you, enjoy the hard copies, in fact, for some of my more complicated set ups, I have many pages marked for easy reference, and my manuals are always in my camera bag for easy reference.
