Leaving for a Viking Rhine River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel next week. Was just wondering, given the Viking itinerary, do any Hogs who have made the same trip have any tips of what you liked best or what I should be on the lookout for? Since "Chance favors the prepared mind," your tips/advice would be much appreciated.

One day you will cruise down the Rhine in the afternoon with a history lesson on the top deck. You will pass villages and towns. Be on the lookout for some nice landscape shots. The hills have vineyards everywhere. I always carry my Sony HX99V which has a 24-750 mm Zeiss lens with pop up viewfinder. I carry it in a belt pouch and I am always ready for a shot.

Thinking a versatile walk around

Good reviews

Little slow and wide range so can’t be as sharp as some

Any input pro. Con

It is a heavy lens, I would not recommend this lens as a WALK AROUND lens, meaning, you carry it everywhere with you. Especially not good if your going to wear it around your neck using the factory strap.
My personal walk around lens is either the 28-200 (much much lighter) or the newer 16-80 giving you the equivalent focal length of a 24-120 mm lens on a cropped sensor camera. For me, I find myself using the 16-80 all the time, much much lighter than the 28-300 and SHARPER. IMHO

Anyone have any suggestions for a pocket sized camera that also takes RAW?? Looking for something small that I can carry in a pocket.
Thanks

Sony HX 99V shoots RAW shooting and sports a 24-720 mm Zeiss lens and a pop up viewfinder. This camera is my go to vacation camera.

I have a question for all of you guys here.
Has anyone used a mirror lens in their digital camera lately? Any that you recommend?
I used to have one that I use with my film camera but I have not used one with digital.

I would appreciate any recommendations

I used the 500 mirror Minolta on my digital Sony A77II and liked it. (the older AF Minolta lenses fit the A77, A77 II, A 99, A99 II and many other A mount Sony Digital camera's)
Understand you have a fixed aperture and your background has rings (like donuts), which, in some cases, is sort of neat.
Most are slow, f8 to f11, but with today's high iso low noise camera's it's not a bad thing.

I recall between 20 and 40 years ago ads for a right-angle whatsis that attached like a lens, and supposedly let you point your camera north while taking a picture of east. Did this gizmo work? Is it still around. Thanks for responses.

I bought this lens recently (March) on ebay from a seller who proclaimed that they just bought the newer VR version. We used it some and loved it! Sharp, bright, very versatile lens. Last month on a photo trip to the Oregon Coast it began to "click" just a little at around 40~45mm when zooming. Then suddenly, it locked up and won't zoom. Local Camera Techs shop said that it's a known issue and would be $395 if no parts were broken and that part were currently unavailable from Nikon. Nikon says they'll fix it for $679.

I'll probably go with Nikon but my question is this; If Nikon fixes it and replaces or corrects their defect, does it stay fixed? I have never dropped or abused it and when not in use it's always in the case or in the bag on the camera. I am considering just buying the newer VR version ($1800 ! ! ). I am reluctant to spend the dough if it's going to go out again.

I believe I may be cured from buying used if they are so fragile.

I believe Nikon warranties repairs for 30 days. Nothing lasts forever except the earth and sky according to the song anyway.

It's a Nikon 24-70 2.8 older version no vr.
It seems to work and focus ok.
I would hate to part with it for a few weeks.
Anyone have any idea what Nikon would want to repair it?
Or would it be best just to keep using it and not repair it?

If it still works, no issues. If you want to sell it and get the most out of it, call Nikon at 1-800-645-6687. They will usually send you an estimate, if you think it too high, they will send it back to you, I believe you pay the postage.

Just a heads up about the dangers of no knowing what your doing.. Apparently I used one with to many amps. Really not any instructions came with it but Amazon had something about 1 amp.

Barnum Bailey used to sell those. Wonder why he went out of business?
If it was me, I would notify amazon. Or at least write an appropriate review.

Hi all. I have a Nikon D7000 with the 35mm 1.8 and the 18-55mm VR 3.5/5.6 zoom. I am going to the Finger Lakes/Ithaca/Watkins Glen areas in two weeks for a waterfall workshop and was wondering if these two lenses would be sufficient. I want to keep things simple and light. I also have variable ND and CPLs for both lenses. I think these are fine, but just wanted your opinions. Thanks.

Depends on the size of the water fall and how close or how far away you are.

I was reminded of a cartoon. It takes place at a circus - the act was billed as the "Balancing Brothers" and shows one guy riding a bicycle while about 5 other guys balanced themselves on top of him. Great to watch this feat of balance. One spectator turns to another and says "They're not really brothers".
Did the lens description really matter?

He says he used a 300 mm lens with a 2X extender. That imply's he has a prime lens and probably an F4, which, as YOU know, can handle a 2X and still get auto focus with MOST of today's digital.
I believe it is important when you post here that you are as accurate as possible.
It was not a 300mm prime, it was a zoom that may or may not zoom out to 300. And since it was a zoom, it probably cannot auto focus with a 2X extender.
The OP just put a camera on this THING and took a picture of it to post, and that is all he was doing, trying to create a interesting post, except it was not accurate.
I believe we should be as accurate as we can in posting on this site. Otherwise, what is the point of posting.
