Isn't there a famous horseshoe curve on a railroad in or near Altoona??

If you go east towards Huntington, there is some beautiful scenery going through the mountains. I have driven both the Northern and directly East routes into Huntington; the northern one is gorgeous but as I remember the one directly east is scenic also. Both routes eventually come together and go through the mountains in a river gorge.

I had a roommate in school who still lives in that area. Spangler, near Barnesboro, which is nearAltoona. Coal mine Country. I drove around that area and found wonderful scenery. Johnstown had great scenery near it, as well. You need to explore, for sure.
Overlooked, out in the more quiet areas there is very little light pollution. I saw the Milky Way one night back in 1984. I hadn’t seen that since a small kid camping out in my back yard in the Lehigh Valley. I haven’t been back to the Spangler, Barnesboro, Johnstown,Altoona area in a long time, but the area seems to retain its’ character well. Probably still lots of Astro-Photography to be had around that area. As well, exploring the area should turn up some great country scenery. Enjoy.

US Route 6 in Pennsylvania has been designated a Scenic Highway by The National Geographic Society. The Zane Grey Museum is on the eastern end of Rt. 6.
The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in Wellsboro, Pa.
The Altoona Railroaders Museum
The Gallitzin Tunnel
The Allegheny Portage Railroad
Altoona is not too far from Pittsburgh. Philadelphia is farther away than Pittsburgh, but it's not a killer drive.

sb Loc: Florida's East Coast

I spent two years in grad school in State College. I loved the nearby Amish towns, but there are also a lot of state parks and national forest areas with beautiful walking trails. We also had a great dairy farm down the road - that sold milk in glass bottles which you returned for reuse.

Mac - it takes 5-6 hours to cross the state of PA from the eastern side (near NYC) to the western side - where Pittsburgh is. Altoona is just about half-way across the state - so, three hours from Pittsburgh!!!

Altoona is not in the center of the state, look at a map.
It's about 2 hours from Pittsburgh.

Don't NEED to, Mac … I stayed there - at a motel, once … and I remember it was about THREE hours AFTER passing thru Pittsburgh. And, Philadelphia - is just about ANOTHER three hours EAST of Altoona … so, it's the midway point on the "lower level" just as Harrisburg is the midway point on the "mid" level, and Scranton - is the midway point (just about) on the "upper Level" … I've crossed the state, many, many times

You stayed there in a motel once?
I grew up in Pittsburgh. I lived in Philadelphia for about 30 years.
Yes you do NEED to look at a map.
