The Canon PRO 300 is a brilliant printer. Would also recommend the Canon Professional Print and Layout free software. Lots of reviews available online.

My photography goes back to the 60s when landscape wide angle was 35mm. That then came down to 28mm, then 24mm. One local photographer made a name for himself using 17mm. He always included interest close to the camera to give his pictures depth. These days most of us do this with our 24/28mm lenses by getting down low to take the shots. Telephoto are fine for compressing distance but in my view wide angle lenses are most widely used for landscape. As well as the angle they give you greater depth of field, so sharper from close up to infinity. My above figures refer to 35mm film cameras and full frame digital.

Adobe Bridge is free. I have it as part of Photoshop CC but you can download it free on its own.

Traveling to England in a few to hike and capture images in the Lake District in England. Flying into Manchester and driving to the Lake District. I will be renting the 46 MP mirrorless Nikon and the top 24-70 lens.

So many kind hogs were such a great help with my Africa expedition that I thought I'd better ask for help and suggestions again.

Thanking everyone in advance.

Hi Rick,

I live 200 miles south of the LD but try to get up there most years.

PhotoDerek has given you a great list. Depending how long you are coming for you may have to prioritise.

Somewhere I haven't seen mentioned in other posts is Wastwater, in Wasdale. This is the deepest lake in England and is on the west side of the LD. I like the remoteness of it. It can be quite eerie. Well away from most tourists but popular with serious walkers. Driving to it takes you over the Wrynose and Hardnott passes which are spectacular. Also you go past the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, so plenty to see for a full day's trip.

We often tow our caravan to Keswick on the edge of Derwentwater. There, weather permitting, I'd recommend going out for sunrise and walking between Keswick and Friars Crag, past the boat landings. At that time in the morning you will only see other photographers and dog walkers, very different to a few hours later when it gets very busy. You should also capture some great images.

Langdale is also wonderful and we usually go for a walk around Blea Tarn, again quieter away from the majority of the tourists. Ambleside and Grassmere are lovely but very busy.

Personally I would recommend carrying a telephoto lens as well as the 24-70. I have the Canon 24-105L and the 70-300L. There are times when, with the magnitude of the vista, you want to zoom in prioritise specific features. I much prefer doing this in camera rather than cropping later. I know you will understand this from your US experience. You may well feel our LD is small compared to many of your National Parks, but it's still very impressive.

Please let us know what you think of it on your return.

Incidentally my son and I did an Autumn Colours photo workshop in Colorado before Covid. It was amazing, based around Ridgway, Ouray and Telluride.

Enjoy our Lake District,

Nigel.

Are you sure you haven't missed it.

I have the Canon Pro 300 and "Custom" is at the very bottom of the list of paper sizes.

Also, I use Canon's Professional Print and Layout software and in that "Specify Custom Size" is at the top of the list.

Some articles seem to state that this software only works with the Prograf printers like the Pro 300. However, this is not right as the link below confirms. The software is free download and is very good IMHO.

There's a very good video about Boeing and its change of focus from making planes to making money. Coincidentally (?), after no one at Boeing was found to be liable, the chief prosecutor went to work for Boeing's law firm. That's not mentioned in this video, though. And the case was settled with a deferred prosecution agreement — an agreement that Columbia Law Professor John Coffee at the time called — “one of the worst deferred prosecution agreements I have seen.”

I recommend on Netflix the documentary "Downfall. The Case Against Boeing". You'll choose Airbus for your future flights after seeing that.

I really enjoy my driving. I'm very happy to have all the goodies to help me drive safely and legally, so night camera, speed limiter, automatic breaking if I get too close, etc. etc. are fine, as long as I can control them. Having an automonous car, manufactured by the most unreliable brand in the UK, year after year, and costing a ridiculous £77,300 is a definite NO.

Raw has nothing to do with advance editing techniques. You can do the same things to a jpg as you can to a raw, in fact more, a lot more. Raw has more dynamic range needed in some rare cases where the jpg is so far off in exposure and color tones that editing a raw picture will reap better results. Re-read CHG_CANON reply, it is accurate other than all 12 of the issues he listed can easily be edited in a jpg image. Also note that a jpg image can be loaded into a raw editor and has all the same tools available as with a raw file.

If you're interested in photography, then you should be learning and perfecting editing skills, as that is a large part of photography today. Raw is not going to do much as far as learning to edit. Understanding RAW is a good idea, but just remember that the very LAST thing that makes for a good photograph is shooting in RAW.

I'm sorry, but I totally disagree with your last sentence. The Raw file will contain much more information and so when you come to post process you can get much more improvement than when working on a jpeg.

For family snaps etc. I use my jpegs with very little PP, but when I am entering competitions, or uploading to social media, I start with the RAW file and ensure that my end result fully reflects my best work. It is always a decision between seeking perfection and time spent. When I return from a month in the US, New Zealand etc. I may have 1000 photos which I want to keep. To PP all of those would commit months to sitting in front of my computer. No thanks. But if I enter a few images into a competition then I feel time spent in PP is worthwhile.

RAW will give you the best end result, but with a time cost.

This can't be because they are jpegs. I have thousands of jpegs which I catalogue with Adobe Bridge and they all have Exif information attached. Similarly jpeg entries I have received as Competition Secretary at my photographic society. Do UHH remove it perhaps??

Both images are superb and clearly in focus, but I think I like the blurry background produced by your wife's lens a lot better than the nondescript background produced from your 600mm.

I agree about preferring your wife's photo. I believe it important to show wild animals in their natural environment. Certainly blur the background to focus on the subject, but IMHO not to the degree of losing it entirely.

In competition judges want to see the environment.

I've heard several versions of this, and they're all basically the same. If people can't agree on something simple, how can they agree on a world-wide plot and then keep it secret? Someone posted this online today.

Every conspiracy theorist should be forced to sit on a committee of any sort and see how hard it is to actually get anything done.

"The roof is going to cave in if we don't have it repaired."

"I know a guy who can do it."

"Oh, he charges too much. I know a guy who can do it for half that."

"But he is known to cut corners."

"We should have a separate committee dedicated specifically to the repair of our roof."

"Okay, that sounds good. Who wants to chair this committee?"

"Not me."

"I chaired a committee last month."

"I chaired one twenty years ago, and we're still not done taking care of the ghost problem."

"Let's shelve this for the next meeting. It's time for refreshments."

"Didn't we put this on the back burner last month? And the month before that? And the month before that?"

"Oh please. We've been back burner-ing this issue for the past thirty years."

Now, picture this happening with rival governments all trying to agree on what to do.

Do you have a graphics pad? I have had this unexpected rotation a few times with PS but have found that I have unknowingly hit one of the buttons on the pad and then rotated my hand on the pad. Doesn't appear in history so sometimes have needed to close and open again.
