Here are two pictures I took with the D850 one was with the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G the other with AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm 1:2.8G ED. The 200mm looks better to me than the 300 both are cropped. I was using a app called SnapBridge and it was sending me low quality pictures to my iPad. After I hooked up my camera to my iMac the raw files looked a lot better than what I was seeing in the preview on my iPad.

It seems to be out of focus. Also I can see clouds in front of the moon. You need a clear sky to make a clean image. turn on live view and zoom in, focus using live view. Use a tripod & remote trigger or timer so that you do not disturb the camera when you shoot.

It’s over cast here but theirs a few breaks n the clouds. I just swapped to a newer lens but it only 200mm

Check your focus. It might be off on the other camera. Another reason is pixel density. The 7100 has a tiny bit more pixel density than the 850. If you zoom and crop the image to the same size, the image from the full frame will be slightly more jagged.

Here’s one I just took. I’m learning as I go.

I would Love to have a nicer lens but taking pictures of the moon was just for fun. I also wanted to try taking pictures of the stars. Here are the other two lens that I have that are Zoom-Nikkor AF-S NIKKOR 55-300 1:4.5-5.6 G ED DX and AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm F4 G ED would you recommend one of these over the older zoom? Also I have a AF FISHEYE NIKKOR 10.5mm 1:2.8 G ED I thought would be good for the night sky.

Post a sample with the D850

Full moon is not great if you are looking for contrast and detail - the lighting is very flat.

The Kenko 2X TC will take away 25% of your sharpness.

The TX will turn your F5.6 lens into an F11 lens

You shouldn't rely on auto focus. Better to use live view and focus manually, very carefully. You will get far better results.

These were taken with a D800 - first image using a Sigma Sport 150-600, the second using a Nikkor 600mm F4 neither lens was fine tuned on that body. I just typically make sure when I get a new piece of gear that it is up to factory spec. This allows me to use lenses and cameras interchangeably and without any hesitation.

I didn’t keep any of the photos from last night because they was to blurry. I have pictures of the moon taken with the 7100 but not from last night. I think my problem is that it is a FX camera and I probably need a larger zoom lens.

Well, for starters since the D850 is FX the moon will be about 1/3 smaller in the frame so it will entail more cropping, but that shouldn’t be an issue with the 45 MPs of the D850 it shouldn’t matter. I know nothing of your 2x teleconverter so I have no idea whether the trade off in reach is worth any degradation of IQ.
The thing is all you said is that the pictures “aren’t the same” with no specifics. Is the problem sharpness? Exposure? What? Maybe it needs to be fine tuned to that lens. Try shooting in live mode and focus manually.
Really for my money a full moon is the most boring moon shot. All the light is straight on. Try 3/4 or half moon and the side light will show the relief better.

The pictures are blurry with the 850 vs the7100 it’s the same lens on both but with the 7100 the pictures are clear and in focus.

I am trying to shoot the moon and have done so with my Nikon D7100 but now I have a D850. I’m using the same setting I used with the D7100 but my pictures are not turning out the same. The lens I’ve use on both is the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G and I’m using a tripod. My question is it seams like the 7100 takes better picture of the moon. Is it because it’s a DX vs a FX?

I have a N-AF 2X TELEPLUS MC7 would it help bring the moon closer in the frame of the FX camera?
Can some one here give me a starting point as far as setting on my camera?
Here what I’m using now ISO 200 f8/f11 shutter speed 1/250 with the AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 G
And is it possible to use the 2X teleplus with the D850 for shooting the moon?

I want to try and shoot the moon Friday night when it’s full.

I go the park most weekend with my children now 8 & 9 as they just got a bicycle for their birthday in July and I got a new D850 for my birthday in June. And I enjoy taking photos of them in the park playing. If there’s another child in the frame they are just in the frame. I never gave it that much thought about other children being in my photos but if your in a public place I believe you have the right to take pictures of anyone you want in public. I might be wrong about that but I’ve never had anyone tell me not to take photos at the park.

I read that the 85mm lens is an ideal lens for portraiture work. However, if you have a cropped DSLR camera, that’s a lens that seems impossible to buy as all of the 85mm lenses I see for sale, including the Nikon, are for full frame cameras. So that an 85mm lens placed on a cropped camera, as I believe most of us own, will actually be a 127mm lens, not a great portrait lens. Therefore, for most of us, I guess we should be using a 50mm lens that will give us an actual 75mm effective focal length which is closer to the recommended 85mm lens. I’m I thinking correctly here or am I missing something?

The closest focal I can find is the Nikon 60mm on my D7100 which equals 90mm. This is personal my favorite and you can find them used most of the time on letgo app or Facebook market place. I’m in Birmingham and on Facebook market place I found one for $200

I am considering moving from Luminar 3 to a Creative Cloud subscription. I see that I would get Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. I believe that with a lot of training I would be better off than with Luminar. My question is with license. If I subscribe would I be able to use the software on two different computers, a PC and a MacBook Pro or would the license limit my download to just one device? My reason for change is because when I was editing a 24 meg file off my d750 I had no problem, sense my purchase of a d850 the large file size is choking Luminar to a slug pace. Thanks

I went from a D7100 to a D850 and I have a iPad Air 2 iPhone 7 and a iMac late 2008 and never had a problem editing the raw files from the D7100 but all my devices struggled to edit from the D850. But when I lowered the raw settings just one step down from the highest it solved my problem. Now I can edit them just as easily as the D7100. Hope this helps.
And I can’t really tell the difference I quality just the file size.

One more suggestion. I haven’t used iDVD in a long time but I still use photos on the iMac to make slideshow. I have a Apple TV that I use to play my slideshows on my TV without having to use a DVD player. Also when you make dvd it will drop the quality of you photos to 480 if you make a slideshow in photos you can save it out in HD and if you have a Apple TV then you can take advantage of your HD slideshow on your HD TV.

If you do with dvd it only got to be 480. Another way of doing this is to take your slideshow from photos and put it on a USB key. Some TV have a USB port that will play video files. Just make sure your tv can do that. Also make sure what file format the Tv can play.

Hi, I'm looking to find a really good Slideshow maker and DVD burner for my trip photos.
I've used Iphoto and IDVD in the past and liked them but alas IDVD is kaput.
Right now I'm creating the slide show in Photos and then burning it using MiDVD (from the ap store).
But I am not happy at all with the way the playback from the DVD looks on an HD TV.
Is there something out there that burns the DVD at better playback for TV?
All suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Brian.

In photos on imac go to file create there you will see book, calendar, card, slideshow and prints. I’ve always used slideshow then I exported it out as a movie file. Then I would use iDVD or Toast make make a dvd with the slideshow I created in photos.
Photos has a lot of different effects for your slideshow and you and add music to it. I think it works really well,

Well I was looking to replace my nikon D7100 and was looking on amazon website. But I did go to Best Buy to look at it. It was between the Nikon D500 and the D850. After using both just in store with my SD card I decided on the D850. Mainly because it’s full frame and I was told that if I wanted that extra reach with the zoom lens that's I all ready own which are FX lens I could put the D850 in DX mold a still have a great camera for wild life. But I told the sells person at Best Buy which I think he’s one of the few who knows what they are talking about that my main goal was take great portraits of my children.

When I bought my D7100 the only lens I would buy a FX not DX expected for the kit lens that came with it. 18-140 and I haven’t tried it yet on the D500. My lens are Nikon 50mm 1.4 D and a 1.8 D I like the 1.4 better the 60mm 2.8 D which I loved on the D7100 camera, 85mm 1.8 not D. My next lens is between the Nikon 105mm or a Nikon Zoom. What lens would you recommend next for portraits the 105mm or a zoom?

Thanks for all the replies. I’ve decided not go get a gray market camera. But what about glass? I’ve had Lens that are 5 plus years that never needed anything done to them.
