Mine from Spectrum in Waco, TX is 351.5 Mbps Download and 11.4 Mbps Upload speeds. Upload speeds have always been much lower than download speeds.

Do any of you use the CCleaner subscription? I just ran the free version - with no problems revealed - and it showed how I could put thirty-five other programs to sleep and ease the workload on the computer. It would cost me $35 annually to do that, though.

It also found 102 Registry issues that it could correct - without paying, I think. I hesitate to mess with the registry, though. From what I've seen online, it's not worth the trouble.

Opinions?

Jerryc41,

I use the paid version of CCleaner and Malwarebytes on PCs and laptops. I've used them for years. The free versions I have used for over two decades previously. I never had a problem with either version or program. I clean my registries at least once a week without issue. I haven't made a backup of the registry prior to cleaning in more than 20 twenty years and never had a problem with the registries or anything else the programs did for me. I highly recommend both of them.

I think that my elderly DVD player is on it's last legs and am contemplating buying a new one. There are so many choices out there and they offer features that I haven't a clue as to what they are. I play mainly DVD movies, no Blue Ray. Any suggestions as to what is the easiest to use and the most reliable brand to choose?

2Dragons,

Rather than buy a new one with features you may never use, go buy a used one at your local Goodwill store. You can often find great bargains there on used electronics. You should be able to find one that is easy to use with the features you want and at a good price too!

Just out of curiosity, I tried the "spaces" in Microsoft Word. Under any circumstance, creating, saving and reopening, Word holds whatever number of spaces I use. I tried one, two, three and four.

Loren,

That is because in your version of MS Word you have the "grammar settings" under "punctuation convention" marked as "don't check". You may leave it that way or set it to identify one or two spaces following punctuation. You can find the setting under OPTIONS, PROOFING, GRAMMAR SETTINGS, PUNCTUATION CONVENTION. There are a lot of other settings you may change to reflect the particular style of writing you prefer.

I submit that "communication and understanding" are much less likely to be obtained when the writer is forced to follow some specific style, rather than write in a manner comfortable, and particular to him. My background is scientific/technical. I will grant that there are certain rules/conventions which reasonably must be observed in that area. I do, additionally, have a very strong disposition toward correct grammar, and proper use of the English language! I am pained (nearly literally) at the almost uniform use of incorrect sentence structure and word forms - and words (some, not even words) - by college graduates in the writing professions.

As an aside, some now are saying, correctly, I believe, that if one wishes to utilize a code unintelligible to the younger generation, just use cursive! Or use a dial phone, or almost anything analog! And if they need to add two plus two, better give them a calculator, or six pages of paper on which to use the "new math" - to determine that the correct answer is 5!!!. But that's another aspect of the same subject.

Loren,

That would seem to be reasonable and even logical. However, all the research done on communication indicates that it is the sender's responsibility to ensure the receiver actually receives the intent and meaning of the sender's message. If the receiver does not understand your message, then you are simply talking, or writing, to yourself.

I agree with you 100% about how the younger generation is bastardizing the form and content of the English language. I had difficulties teaching proper communication skills to college students. As a professional certification commissioner for emergency management worldwide, I constantly encounter essays where writing clearly, concisely, and simply is not easy for many people. PhDs were the worst when it came to writing a simple essay, even when we provided the outline from which to prepare it!

As the long-time editorial committee chair of the International Association of Emergency Managers, I still cringe at some of the form and format of the articles submitted for publication. Even with a word processor, most seem to be first drafts with many spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors in only 1,500 words. It is frustrating. Following the rules makes it easier to communicate properly for everyone regardless of which "rules" are chosen. As long as both sides agree, communication can happen.

Don't get us started on that "new math" crap. There are too many of us engineers here.

My foray into typography came via hand-set type. The one using a composing stick and loose type. Between words we were told to use an "en" space, and to use "em" space after periods and colons. Commas and semicolons called for the "en" space.

The same was for line spacing. Lines were separated via "en" spacing, and paragraphs separated by "em" spacing. Our shop teacher was the primary editor, and he regularly red-lined those settings when wrong.

It's been carried over to computer typing for me.

Pendennis,

I did the same in high school in the late 60's in Chicago. We followed the same rules because the type fonts we used were of a fixed space. Later, I moved on to the 1906-1910 platen presses to print the type setups instead of going to the linotype machines to set type automatically. It was some fun times indeed.

Loren,

Writing styles are developed to provide for consistency is the written word to improve communication and understanding between two people. If everybody decided to develop their own rules for writing, who could ever understand the writer's real meaning and intent? The purpose of writing is pass along thoughts and information to someone else. If the other person cannot understand our meaning and intent because he or she cannot follow the content because of a confusing writing style, then communication cannot happen.

The writing style you are using is pretty much standard American English. That makes communication with the majority of Americans, and others who understand our writing style, work. If you followed the Japanese, Chinese, Arab, European, etc., writing styles, communication with Americans would be very difficult indeed.

Stan

Stan,

Microsoft has used its own Writing Style Guide since 1995. The Microsoft Writing Style Guide in 2019 brought the guidance up-to-date for 2018 and is an evolution of the Microsoft Manual of Style from 2012. The current Writing Style Guide version is 2022. It reflects Microsoft's modern approach to voice and style: warm and relaxed, crisp and clear, and ready to lend a hand. It was developed to assist in technical writing, particularly regarding computer technology, rather than newspaper, magazine, and book writing. So, different versions of MS Word will be following different writing style guides.

There are many different writing style guides. As individuals, we can choose which style guide we wish to follow. If we are writing for publication, then we need to follow the publication's (editor's) specified style guide because they are all slightly different - APA, MLA, Turabin, Chicago, New York, Microsoft, etc.

I am in the camp of placing two spaces after a period. I just noticed UHH removes the double spaces.

The standard was to use two spaces following ending punctuation in typewritten documents because of the fixed-spaced fonts used. It made reading the documents much easier. With computers and word processors we mostly use variable-spaced fonts, so only a single space is required following ending punctuation to make reading easier.

I got a mesh network. You get a router and you add repeaters to cover the needed area. I have two repeaters and they cover the house and chicken coop, total distance around 150 ft.

They're plug and play devices. You plug in the router to a modem with a Cat5 cable, then you just plug in the power on the repeaters. I did this a couple years ago and I think there are some setup steps but they were simple and even I managed to get the whole thing up and running in about 15 minutes.

It gives you a local network for printers and everything and the one I got has a secondary network which you can use to give guests access to internet but not your printer and maybe network drives.

There are several different brands out there. Costco sells one. Google has one. Amazon has one (or more).

It hangs occasionally, maybe once every 3-6 months. I just turn the router off and wait 10 seconds and turn it on again and the problem is solved.

Another benefit of the mesh network over an extender is that your connection between the different mesh connections is seamless. You do not have to log in again as with the extenders. I have a mesh in my home (3,000 sq ft). It also works out in the back yard, front yard and garage without an issue. The signal is always strong.

Supposedly during the Cold War, we had planes, satellites, cameras etc that had the ability to read license plates on Moscow streets.

Our photo recon satellites (KH-7, 8, & 9 (Keyhole) had powerful cameras that used long rolls of thin plastic light-sensitive film to make photo negatives -- the cameras were not digital like many of today's cameras. The negatives exposed in space then came back to earth in film return capsules. Our Film Recovery Vehicles captured the capsules and returned the film to the US Air Force and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) to be developed and studied.

The KH-9 featured two separate cameras working together to produce stereo images. These so-called “optical bar cameras” on the bottom of the satellite spun on their axes, taking overlapping images to form a very large panoramic picture. Objects smaller than two feet across could be imaged from around 80-100 miles altitude.

Some missions included a separate mapping camera mounted at the front of the satellite. This camera imaged wider areas to make very accurate maps for war planning and featured its own bucket-like film return vehicle.

You can read about some of our earlier reconnaissance satellites at the National Museum of the United States Air Force website <https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/195923/cold-war-in-space-top-secret-reconnaissance-satellites-revealed/>

What kinds of things grab your interest? Are you willing to get off the Interstate highways? How far are you willing to detour?

Waco is between Dallas or Fort Worth and Austin. You can visit the home of Dr. Pepper and the Texas Ranger Museum, which is much better than it sounds.

Fredericksburg is about an hour from San Antonio and is home to The Museum of the Pacific War (originally a museum focusing on Admiral Chester W. Nimitz). It is a very reflective place with interesting photographic subjects. The town itself is a German community with lots of interest. There's an abandoned railroad tunnel a few miles from town which provides shelter for a large bat colony.

San Antonio has a great zoo with natural habitats and a great botanical garden.

Dallas has a premier 66 acre arboretum also.

The Hill Country offers places like Gruene (pronounced "Green"), Kerrville, and a host of others.

Austin prides itself on being "weird." They have a major bat colony under a bridge over I-35. The Salt Lick Barbecue is a family style restaurant near Buda, about 20 miles from town. Lots of cultural stuff in Austin itself, including an active art community.

This is just a short list. There's a lot more. Come and be welcome and have a great time.

In Waco, we also have Baylor University and their new football stadium. Lake Waco and the Wetlands are interesting areas to hike and photograph, especially when the wildflowers are blooming. If your wife watched the Gaines show "Fixer Upper" on HGTV, you all should visit the Silos, their Bakery, and their original second-hand store. Folks from all over the USA and other countries come to Waco just to see them.

Fort Hood is about 40 miles from Waco on the way to Austin. They have some interesting military displays and museums to visit.

Texas offers many opportunities to get some great photographs and create fantastic memories. Take your time and stop at the smaller towns too. You won't be sorry.

That's a great answer. I know of what you speak first hand. I lived in Memphis in the 60's and Interstate 40 was to go from coast to coast. They leveled 16 blocks of older but very fine brick homes in a corridor from west of Overton Park toward downtown Memphis. The highway would have gone through the park that contained a 16 acre wooded area of walking trails, a zoo, a nine hole golf course, art museum etc. The highway was abandoned after spending most of two decades in court. Proposals for going around the park, under the park, over the park, were all quashed. After the amount of time spent in court it was decided I-40 was too expensive, so would simply cease to exist at the Mississippi River and come back to life on the other side of Memphis! It is now bridged by I 240 and other highways around the city adding probably ten miles to the journey coast to coast. So what happened to the 16 blocks that were torn down? The city sold off the lots, giving first choice of purchase to the people who lost their property two decades earlier.

Yes Bridges. Another example of our "leaders" unable to get their acts together in support of the citizens of the USA. It has occurred throughout our history and will continue to occur into our future. People are born selfish and it seems as if the real selfish ones become politicians. GOD save us all, please!
