I'm confused. You said you had a 10-18 and loved a 12-24??? The 10-18 is a good bit wider than the 12-24, so what's the problem?

I guess I didn't make it clear - the 10-18 is an EF-S lens and can only be used on the 7D (where it effectively a 16-29.

I'm looking for a lens with a minimum focal length of 10-12 on a full frame camera.

Thanks

Incredibly useful, now that the software has been updated, for improving my Lightroom workflow. I have it mounted in front of my keyboard at a 45 deg angle so the controls are instantly available.
I have a Loupedeck + on order, which has more opportunities for workflow enhancement.

I also have a LoupeDeck and find it very useful.

When you have received your LoupeDeck+, will you post a review comparing it with the original?

Much easier is to use Microsoft SyncToy (free). Works very well - it copies individual files rather than a complete backup (just what I want) and I run it every night copying new and changed photos to my RAID array.

When stitching multiple photos into panoramas, do you:

1) shoot RAW, post process, convert to JPG and then stitch into pano?
2) Or do you shoot JPG and then stitch?

Reason I ask is that when shooting RAW and post processing, I find it difficult to maintain the same exposure between the photos. Also, the resulting JPG images are fairly large, and the pano image is enormous.

However, when shooting JPG I can simply lock AE to keep the same exposure levels.

I use Lr CC Classic and it takes care of everything for me, exposure included. Work directly from RAW, only use .jpg for sending to printers

Get yourself a Canon Pixma Pro-100 and watch your output be liberated.

Agreed - you can get them for $50-150 after rebate. Wonderful quality. Have had no clogs in 3 years (take that Epson!)

Just downloaded pictures from a trip to Iceland.

There are 38 pictures that Lightroom (CC Classic, latest version) says can't be imported (it can't even show a preview). Most of the pictures concerned are every 10th picture, some are consecutive pictures and a few are random singles. All 38 are in a run of 230 pictures. Never had a problem like this before. The pictures were not taken in a burst.

Any ideas? Could it be the memory card or the camera?

Mainly travel, particularly city shots where you are too close to a building, etc. to use a longer lens

I am a Canon guy with a 5D4 and 7D2 bodies and 24-70 f/4L, 70-200 f/2.8L, 100-400 f/4L, 10-18 and Sigma 18-300.

I am looking for an ultrawide zoom for the full framer. I had an evaluation loan of the 12-24 f/2.8L and loved it, except for the weight and (a little) for the price.

Any suggestions for top quality ultrawide zooms? I would like it to be as light as possible and budget isn't a primary issue. I've looked at all the Canons and Sigma lenses and the good, fast ones are all about 30+ ounces (duh)

I have recently subscribed to light room and am looking for advise on which moderately priced monitor I should purchase for my PC. I am trying to insure the best way to evaluate changes I am making in light room. I have tried "Search" and could not find an answer to this question. Thanks!!

Bigger is indeed better and so is 4k. You can get a good (Samsung, Dell or LG) 4k 28" monitor for a few $100. I use a 32" Dell Professional Series 4K monitor (very expensive) and a Samsung 28" 4k monitor (Very inexpensive at Costco and elsewhere). Calibrate both with Spyder 4 Elite. This gives my big monitor almost the whole image at 1:1 - very useful

Finding my all-in-one printer not adequate for producing quality photos. I would like to know everyone's opinion on these two printers. Or should I look at it Epson? Thank you in advance. Dave

I have the Pro-100 and haven't had a single clogged nozzle in 2 years (despite only occasional use).

Right now they are on sale at B&H for $70 after MIR!

Don't forget - if you use SSDs, you need to TRIM occasionally

BarbB, I'm not sure of the cost differential, but if cost is not a significant factor, or it may be pocket change compared to the total cost of your trip, but I'd opt for the extra body, as it would serve two different purposes--a back up in case the prime camera gets damaged (it does happen).

I've never been on one of those safaris, but can you hand hold a 400mm with a 1.4 converter (almost 640 mm equivalent, not to mention the f/stop loss) steady enough to get the shot not showing any vibrations? Remember both your subject and you may be moving! I may be considerably older than you, but I find my maximum hand held range is now about 300MM; that is not a disparagement of youth, it was great when I had it, but those days are passed . Most of what I've read here on UHH from those who have made similar trips say that even tripods are next to useless (just like on ships and boats) as you will most often be in moving trucks on unfinished roads. .

Enjoy the trip and please post some photos when you return.

For long lenses, I suggest a sandbag (or a modern equivalent with plastic beads). Also, ask the driver to cut the engine whenever he stops.

I am planning a trip to Namibia, and currently shoot with a canon 5DM4. My longest lens is 70-300L. I was thinking about upgrading to the 100-400L II ( and adding a 1.4 extender) and then I thought about getting a second ( back up ) camera body, maybe the Canon 7DM2 instead. That, with it’s crop factor, would give me almost the same reach as the 100-400 with a 1.4 teleconverter. I could then have a camera with a landscape lens, and one with “wildlife” lens mounted. So, here is the question..How many of you travel with a back up camera, and is it the same model or type as your primary, or would you travel with one camera and a longer reach lens? Any advice would be appreciated. I am trying to make a purchasing decision that will serve me well not only this trip, but for future travels as well.

Difficult question as the best animal pictures are usually at sunrise and sunset, so a low noise FF camera is indicated.

So you have FF 5D4+100-400+1.4X at 560mm, or
7D2+70-300+1.4X at 672mm

I have a 5D4 and 7D2 with 70-200 f/2.8L and 100-400 f/4L. Also Canon 1.4X and 2X extenders. I will typically use the 5D4 with the 100-400, alone or with the 1.4X (for 560mm) and the 7D2 with the 70-200 and the 1.4X (448mm) or 2X (640mm). When I need absolute maximum reach I use the 7D2 with the 100-400 and 1.4X (896mm) or 2X (1280mm). I try to avoid the extenders whenever possible as they do degrade the IQ.

I love both the 70-200 and the 100-400, but I find the 100-400 more useful.

Hope this helps. If you can swing it, I would get the 7D2 and the 100-400.

I spoke to UPS on the phone and they told me I could not ship a $4,500 package through a UPS Store and that I could not have it picked up. My only options was a UPS Customer Center 30 miles away.

I also called FedEx and they told me that they would only insure $1,000 maximum!

I looked at the DHL website and I had to request a quote, so it looked like they were only interested in business shipments. Maybe I was wrong on that.

The problem with UPS (for me at least) is that they will only accept high value items at their Customer Centers - for me, despite living in a state capital, that is nearly 30 miles, 40-60 minutes, plus tolls to go to the other side of Baltimore.

FedEx will not insure for more than $1,000 unless you have a commercial account with them.

USPS Priority Mail will insure up to $5,000, although the insurance is ungodly expensive - 1.35% of the declared value.

The issue only arose when I had lenses on loan from Canon and needed to return them. All my other shipments to Canon are at their cost as part of CPS.

So if your shipment is valued over $5,000, the only option is UPS (who will insure up to $50,000). Between $1,000-5,000 it's USPS Priority Mail, under $1,000 it's UPS or FedEx
