I have a small collapsible gray/white card that I carry in my bag. (Similar to the one at B&H referenced below.) I use it when doing product, real-estate or portraits. Or when the colors have to be close to reality. Like making sure the shade of blue cabinet is correct. Sometimes the walls of a room give you a tint that your eyes don't even catch.

It just takes a single frame to capture it. If I'm shooting a person, I just have them hold it. When I'm in post processing, I use the eyedropper in Color Balance to figure out what it is. it's not perfect - but it's a good place to start. I also have a passport color checker that I use when I remember to pull it out.

The white side of the grey card can also be use as a bounce for a flash.

Canon (I have a Canon Pro 1000) and Moab. B&H has good pricing on Canon paper. I like the Canon Pro Luster for most things. I like the Moab papers for higher-end projects. I use the Moab Entradalopes (Rag Natural) for cards.

Which one did you get? How is it configured?

I've been recommending XoticPC for about 10 years - and other than the occasional hiccup they have been a solid company to deal with. However, I rarely suggest the MSI brand. ASUS, Sager or their house brand seem to be a better value and what I normally recommend. Your's is the first of over 30 laptops that I have heard of from my circle that was not operating correctly on delivery. At least XoticPC stands behind their products and is working with you to resolve this.

I don't like to spend $$ so I got their "house brand" laptop almost a year ago - https://xoticpc.com/collections/advanced-series-gaming-laptops/products/xotic-g58dd-nh58ddw - with 32 gb ram, (2) 2 TB XoticPC NVMe, PCIe, m.2 drives, Grizzly thermal cooling upgrade and GPU overclocking for a little over $2000. The comparable MSI did not support dual external displays and it was $500 more expensive at the base configuration.

Since the cpu uses a dynamic throttle for clock speed, there are times that the fan can be loud, like on startup, but most of the time it is undetectable. These computers can get a little hot, but it is within design specs. I am going to go out on a limb and say that you may have gotten a lemon.

Unless you are doing video editing and playback, 3D design and/or need to drive multiple 4K displays, the graphics on the XPS 15 is more than adequate. Remember, Capture One barely uses graphics processing, and as long as you have enough vram to run your displays, there is little benefit to getting more graphics processing power. The graphics card on my desktop has 1 gb vram and drives two HD displays (1920x1200) with no issues at all. I am not familiar with Affinity so I can't be helpful there.

I routinely edit D800 and D810 files and often they are stitched panoramas as big as 200 mp, and my laptop has no issues. But neither did my 12 yr old desktop.

It was the MSI Creator Series - XOTIC recommended it. Glad you had good luck with them.

I'm back to searching for a Laptop PC (not Mac) for photo use. I ordered a MSI Creator series from XOTIC PC - and the mousepad was dead on arrival. The fan was also very loud. It is being returned.

Any recommendations? I'm running Capture One and Affinity Photo with large (40M) files, and my existing (old) Lenovo Think Pad gets bogged down.

I've looked at the Dell XPS 15, but concerned that the graphics card is not powerful enough.

Thanks...

I've been using Affinity for a couple of years as a PS replacement. I use it with Capture One. I bought the book - and used it a little at the start of my learning curve. It was on sale for $35. As someone pointed out that's very inexpensive for a hard-backed text book.
Here's how I learned Affinity. Let's say I need to remove power lines from a photo. I find the tutorial on how to remove objects in Affinity. That goes on one monitor. On my other monitor - I have the photo that needs to have power lines removed. I may have to "rewind" and replay that tutorial a bunch of times in a step by step fashion while I edit the photo - but it sinks in for me.

1. Definitely shoot more. And shoot stuff outside of my comfort zone.
2. Work towards getting more artful/creative/emotional shots vs just being a technician behind the camera.
3. Start pushing the boundaries of my new R5 that I got in November.
4. Print more with my Canon Pro 1000 - which has been greatly underused.
5. Get a new laptop. My 10 year old Lenovo Thinks Pad is maxed out when handling the new R5 image sizes - especially after post processing in Affinity Photo where the file sizes get even bigger.

I've been using it for a few years in conjunction with Capture One.
I find the key is using 2 monitors - one with a photo I am editing, one with an Affinity tutorial.

I use Capture One as my Lightroom replacement. I get updates every year for around $125. (Order early.) I've been using it for over 2 years and am happy with the results. They keep making improvements to keep up with Lightroom. I do professional photo work and use the software a lot.
I use Affinity Photo as my Photoshop replacement. Affinity and Capture One play well together.

I'm printing large 13 x19 size prints and looking for good quality envelopes to hand deliver them to someone. When you get a large print at Costco - they have a large white envelope plus a piece of cardboard to keep it stiff.
Any recommendations on a source for this? I've seen 13 x 19 envelopes on Amazon - but not sure if they would fit a 13 x 19 print. Also looking for envelopes for 17 x 22.
Thanks for the help.

I use Lynda to learn Photoshop. Free through local library and covers every aspect of photoshop. From very basic beginner Photoshop to advanced. They even have a whole course on selections. Each segment of each tutorial is short and comes with downloadable photos so that you can follow along with the same photo the instructor is using. I have a big thick book on Photoshop and it was outdated the day I bought it... never used it nor could ever find the answers to any of my questions.

Many times you can get Lynda.com free through your library system.
The way I learned PS was to have a photo of my own I was trying to fix on one monitor - and an applicable tutorial on my other monitor.
I now use Affinity Photo vs. PS - and they have good YouTube tutorials as well.

Good video. I've never played with LUTs.
When do you use them?

I'm still trying to make a decision on a RF24-105 f4 or RF24-70 f2.8 - on a R5. In terms of IQ.
Any real-world comparisons out there? I'm on a wait list - like a number of others.

Thanks...

I took the early upgrade last year. They had a good release with a lot of new features mid-year. So you may not see all the new features right away.
The "upgrade" is around the same price as an annual Adobe LR/PS subscription. I use Affinity Photo vs. PS so I don't need PS.
I use Capture One at least 2 or three times a week for my professional photography work and find that it is a good tool. So I find a lot of value in it. Funny - most photographers I know wouldn't blink at spending $120 for a filter or camera bag - but freak out over spending anything for software.
If I wasn't doing professional work I might look at lower cost or free options. I have to work fast and have excellent results which is why I use and continue to support Capture One.

I like my RRS tripod. Also - I mount my long lenses to the tripod (even my 70 to 200) which balances the load.
