Have you looked at the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, the newest version of this lens?

Great lens!

I purchased my first SLR in the mid 70's..an Olympus OM-1. An advanced camera for the time but it was ALL manual except for metering. You had a mechanical aperture ring on the lens and a mechanical shutter ring on the camera. You simply set one and moved the other until the exposure needle in the view finder was horizontal. Very effective and, IMO, easier to use than today's manual mode which is all digital. Without an auto mode, it FORCED you to learn the fundamentals of advanced photography. So I agree. The best way to learn is to fully understand manual mode and move on from there to take advantage of modern DSLR advanced features.

I bought Davis Busch's guide for the Canon 6D. Very comprehensive and easy to follow. Good investment.

Nice. How do you like that lens?

So far so good. It's kind of slow so it's definitely a daylight lens. Upside is it's not too heavy and easy to hand hold. Very quick focus and very sharp. If you haven't already, watch the Dustin Abbot reviews on you tube. That's what sold me.

Excellent set.

Thanks, Angler. In fact, thanks to all who took the time to look and comment. I think the goal for most of us is to learn and get better. You all certainly have helped. Most gratifying.

JJS - I second this comment. All the images are wonderful in color and focus, but each seem like they could have been just a bit more space to present the entire bird. You might revisit how you've cropped the original or look at changing how you frame the image during capture. You might experiment too at a slower shutter and lower ISO. The first bluejay reports f/8 with ISO-1000 and shutter 1/1000. I think you could have captured the same sharp result around 1/500 with ISO cut in half as well.
b JJS /b - I second this comment. All the images... (show quote)

Thanks for your comments. Agree I zoomed in a little too tight. Also, I was set up for capturing possible BIF (no luck) and forgot to dial back a bit. They came out of the camera a little noisy but cleaned up pretty well in Lightroom, I think.

Handheld? If so, what exposure? Nice.

Yes, handheld. f8, 1/1,000, ISO 1,000, 400mm. Thanks for looking.

Congrats on first post. Many love and enjoy the bird world here. May I just suggest that you not crop so close to your subject. Give them room and not cut off feet, tails, etc. I prefer natural environment to be included over portraits but that is just my preference. Develop your own taste and enjoy. Glad you are with us!

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I was probably zoomed in to close on the Blue Jays. The Finch was cropped as it was perched on a bird bath which I didn't want in the photo.

Went on a cruise to St. Thomas with friends in April. My buddy bought one from the big camera seller there. Pretty good price and a lot of extras.

I joined this forum a while back and follow it regularly. Until now I have been a silent observer and have learned a lot from the many talented people who participate. Thought it was time to post a few of my own. I took these bird pictures the other day with my Canon 80d and brand new Tamron 100-400. Constructive comments would really be appreciated. Thanks for looking.
