On the nail. Just fitted a 2TB SSD into my late 2012 MacMini (already maxed out on RAM) transformed performance.

An old friend years ago said the same thing - RAM is vv important more than CPU.

KamLan 28mm f1.4 is great. I forgot that or a Nikon D 24/2.8 great little AF lens that will be 36mm on your D7200. I have both. The colours on the KamLan are fantastic. It's manual focus.

I'd get a 16mm or a very fast 35 or 50 - Mitakon make a F0.95, KamLan a manual focus F.1.1 50mm. You could also get some vintage glass I have a Nikon 1.4 50mm which I love. Great portrait lens.

I am an amateur photographer interested in getting into photo processing programs like Topaz. The problem is that I have a 7-year old MacBook Pro (4GB and 500GB HD W/250GB available, running Catalina) that is incredibly slow. I was told by someone at an Apple Store near me, that I should upgrade to 16GB and a 1Tb SSD HD that I could get at Crucial.com for about $90 and $115, and install myself. (The store will not touch any computer that is more than 5 years old.)
Questions:
1. Would the upgrades improve the laptop’s response issues; and,
2. How complicated is it to upgrade the RAM and replace the SSD HD?

Thanks, I appreciate any help.

Hi, fitting 16GB of Ram and a 1TB Crucial HD will transform your computer. I am maxed out at 16GB in my Late 2012 MacMini. I've just bought a Crucial 2 TB HD for $235 from Amazon. I live in Costa Rica and my Mac guy fitted the SSD. I'm delighted. It's much faster, generally runs cooler and loads my Photo software much quicker. I run Capture 1 for FujiFilm (full version), Exposure X5 and ON1RAW 2020. All work brilliantly.
The great thing with doing this, which is an added bonus is that you are being ecologically positive. You are continuing to use your "old" computer which now has a new lease of life. Saving masses of energy by not buying a "new" computer.
You don't need Apple to make the changes. You could do it yourself. I chose not too. A bit too far beyond my comfort zone.
I have used Crucial products for years and rate them very highly. My go to supplier. I buy through Amazon because their delivery to Costa Rica is reliable.
Good luck if - I can help anymore please let me know.

Hi,

Exposure 5 has this sim. I've used it from time to time. You can get a 30 day trial. Good software.

It sometimes happens with my charger for my XT batteries. If I jiggle them around it sorts itself out. Maybe clean the contacts? If not get a new charger.

If you go onto the FaceBook group "Photography With Classic Lenses" you will get help to sort your lenses out. Cleaned and serviced so they all work properly. The Biotar is a sought after lens. The Helios 58 44-2 is a copy (I have one). That lens is definitely worth getting renovated IMO. Good luck.

No, unless you are a member of the 1% then this is less than loose change.

I'm 71. When I was young an uncle had a Leica. We all coveted it. Great marketing for the last 60 years at least.

I read a blog on their terrible support/repair structure and the fragility of some of the recent models. 60 years ago you expected them to outlast you. Now it does not seem to be the case.

And yes, I'd love to have one because I'm still seduced by the Leica myth but my Fujis do just fine for me.

I don't give a thought to this. All Jpegs, SOOC are already processed to make them Jpegs and to apply whatever film sim you have chosen (in the case of Fuji).

RAW files are, sort of, digital negatives which have to be processed.

It's outmoded purist B/S as far as I'm concerned. I take photos for me. I don't take photos for the pixel peepers or the SOOC "purists". Over and out on this one.

I'm about to replace my ailing Fusion Drive in my late 2012 MacMini with an SSD.

I will not be installing Catalina. My current OS does everything I need.

In 6 months when the dust has settled I'll re-visit Catalonia and see what the score is then.

This is Adobe's responsibility and your responsibility. Apple has made it clear for at least one year that 32 Bit apps would not work on the new OS. Adobe could have sorted this ages ago. Adobe needs to get their development team together. I stopped using Adobe products because I found their customer support terrible. This is just another example of their attitude toward their customer base who use Macs.

My sweet wife had similar problems when she loaded “CATALINA”. Apple should have warned folks. I won’t be down-loading it any time soon maybe never& and I will think twice before buying any more apple products. They have gotten too fallible....RJM

Apple has stated clearly for a year, at least, that 32 Bit apps would not be supported by the new OS. I have been busy checking what I have and downloading new drivers for my printer and my scanner and checking that my critical apps will work when I eventually instal the new OS. Apple warn me when I open apps that they will not function with the new OS. I also never load the first release of a new OS. There are always bugs. I wait for 2 or 3 updates before I go for it. Don't blame Apple folks take responsibility for your technology that way it will work for you.

Greetings All, Looking for some information on the differences between Capture One 12
and Lightroom CC. I've tried both on their free trial offers however, I cannot see any major differences. It's the old " I don't know what I don't know" syndrome. Also, I understand Lightroom CC does not have all the features of Lightroom Classis. Any info on that would be useful. Thanks in advance for your support on these questions.

Hi,

I shoot Fuji. LR's handling of Fuji Raw files does not compare with C1 Fuji version. I was a long-time LR user. I now do not use it - I stopped when they went onto subscription.

For Fuji files I use C1 (plus ON1RAW or Exposure X5 for very specific requirements). For Nikon I use ON1 and/or Exposure X5.

I hope this info helps you.
