I recently updated to Mac OS Catalina, and immediately began having problems accessing certain programs and apps. Apple support helped me regain connectivity, but when it came to Photoshop they said I had to contact Adobe. I have Photoshop Elements 12, and since the update of the operating system, the program closes unexpectedly. Usually just after I complete my edits and just before I save them. Has anyone had a similar issue, and if so, what steps did you take to resolve it? Thanks, Herb
Consider going back to the previous system.

My sweet wife had similar problems when she loaded “CATALINA”. Apple should have warned folks. I won’t be down-loading it any time soon maybe never& and I will think twice before buying any more apple products. They have gotten too fallible....RJM
Thanks Stan, I've thought about that, but hoped I could avoid that.

Apple has been warning users for well over a year that the newest version, Catalina, would not support anything 32 bit. Adobe software, other than their latest versions, will not work as they are 32 bit. Ols software becomes unusable at some point. Need any copies of WordPerfect? I predict, sooner or later, that Windows will drop 32 bit support as well. Best of luck.

Do you suppose that APPLE could not make Catalina support 32 bit? Why not?? Do you think?

Apple has stated clearly for a year, at least, that 32 Bit apps would not be supported by the new OS. I have been busy checking what I have and downloading new drivers for my printer and my scanner and checking that my critical apps will work when I eventually instal the new OS. Apple warn me when I open apps that they will not function with the new OS. I also never load the first release of a new OS. There are always bugs. I wait for 2 or 3 updates before I go for it. Don't blame Apple folks take responsibility for your technology that way it will work for you.

Thanks for being a gamma tester!
Early adopters pave the way for Apple, Microsoft, and third-party software providers to find what their beta testers didn’t.
1) In the future, consider waiting three months before buying newly-available hardware and software. By then, most common issues will have been addressed.
2) Also consider using a drive cloning tool (Carbon Copy Cloner on the Mac) to make a bootable external startup drive from your old system. That way, you can return to your comfort zone by holding down the Option key at startup.
3) Also make a Time Machine backup to another external drive.
Those three actions will *prevent* disappointing surprises caused by a system upgrade!

It's not that they couldn't, but doing so to retain backward compatibility would have likely added a lot of code and introduced regressions that would have affected more than those impacted by loss of continued support for older products.
Apple no longer supports the PowerPC processor, although they did so for several years after moving to Intel chips. It's the same thing with 32-bit apps. The Mac started life as a 32-bit machine. That was in 1984. 64-bits has been the standard now for years. If your software vendor hasn't kept up, the shame should be theirs, not Apple's.
That said, of the five Macs I have, only one is currently a candidate for Catalina. It's not the loss of 32-bit programs that's keeping me from upgrading, it's just that I don't need or want the crap Apple is putting into the OS: I don't use or need Apple Music, Apple Photos, Sidecar, Find My, Screen Time, Accessibility, Voice Control, or the stuff that Apple thinks its Mac users deserve to have, but which just further adheres them to the Apple ecosphere.

Consider upgrading to the current versions of your software. It's a better long term strategy than trying to use 6 year old software on a new OS,

It isn’t about capability. They could still support System 6.3 — from the late 1980s — if they wanted to.
Apple is a forward-thinking company. They are constantly improving the MacOS. But every so often, they have to shed older code to make the new system and technical support for it manageable.
It’s called software, because it isn’t permanent. But you don’t always have to follow along. My six-year old Mac can run ten different versions of MacOS (and any version of DOS or Windows), just by booting from the right startup drive.

Technology moves on. 32 bit apps are old and nowhere near as efficient as the newer 64bit versions. If you insist on using old, outdated software, don't update your operating system, use mojave instead which does support 32 bit apps. Apple did not make you upgrade. For the past year, plus, every time I opened a 32 bit app, Apple warned me. You would have to be dead to not know. I like working better and faster, so I keep things current. Although I did update this machine (a 2018 MacBook Pro), which does have Lr, I did not update my main PP machine, an iMac PRO, as of yet. That will happen in a few weeks. Best of luck.

There have been several warnings posted about compatibility problems on UHH due to Adobe's failure to upgrade it's programs. Here is my post from Oct. 9th.

The current issues are small their are easy workarounds. Given Adobe's history, I would expect corrections shortly. Best of luck.
