Was there any damage to the filter? Because if there wasn't your anecdotal evidence doesn't prove anything. Even if the filter was damaged, the little piece of flimsy metal that the filter glass is in bends and breaks much more easily than the end of a lens. Bend the metal the glass in the filter breaks.

Didn't say the filter saved anything. But the grass that was stuck to it could have been a rock that scratehed it. If you read what I have written, I clearly state and stipulate that a filter us not going to save a lens or anything else from catastrophic damage. That absolutely is not the same as saying that it provides no protection at all.

Mine must be defective, it has very limited options and a ridiculously complex mechanism. Am I missing something here? I was expecting much more. I wish I had the option to buy the Z8 without it. I would rather not have a back screen, save the space and the potential unreliability, than have to put up with the abortion that is there now.

Full disclosure: I have many Nikon cameras and lenses I am a fan of the Nikon cameras and lenses. But Nikon's articulating screen design is just plain stupid.

Olympus has had a TRUE articulating screen for many years. Please see attached images for a proper articulating screen design.

I may have missed something somewhere along the way, but I'm unaware of any high-tier Nikon camera, mirror box or mirrorless, that has ever had a fully articulating screen. Tilt screen only. That goes back at least to the D500 and D850. (The D810 had a fixed rear screen.)

With a little experimentation, I suspect that you can find an operating sequence that will provide easier movement of the screen. Try pulling it out a little at the bottom, then pull from the top.

Articulating screens are something of a mixed blessing. Many like them, but my friend who had the camera repair shop and worked on Canon, Sony, and Nikon cameras said that almost 80% of his repairs involved the rear screen. Replacement usually involved complete camera disassembly to access the main circuit board.

Yes, that would work. Though, Jasmine is too busy to do anything but carry her cell phone as a Pediatric Resident at one of LA County's larger medical centers (Harbor UCLA - one of UCLA Med School's teaching hospitals). And she says she will be able to afford whatever she wants when her career takes off. If she even wants to do photography as a hobby anymore by then. So I should just sell or trade for the RF gear I want as part of thinning the herd.

Her life will likely change significantly when she finishes her residency.

OR, it is one of three that can simply be used as a protective filter.....

My choice is a clear filter. But I've had trouble finding one a time or two, so have gone with a UV instead. I've never considered it a critical mission to replace a good UV filter with a clearcine.

After skipping the preparations for 2023, it's that time of the year again for an annual reminder about goals (resolutions). Did you make and accomplish any for 2023? Should you make any new plans for 2024?

Current Equipment

Are you learning to better use your current equipment?
Are you learning your processing software?
Are you organizing your legacy images?
Did you sell your unused and outdated equipment?
Are you using your tripod?
Are you organizing your new images?
Are you using your external (speedlite) flash?
Did you consolidate miscellaneous HDs into a single larger drive?
Did you implement and follow a back-up strategy for your image files, software install files, and passwords / credentials?
Did you investigate insurance / replacement costs of your equipment?
Did you download the PDF copy of your camera model?
Did you analyze your lens usage statistics and identify which lenses went used in 2023? Should you sell that unused equipment?

Technique

Are you using Back Button Focus?
Are you using selective focus with an off-center AF point placed specifically on the subject?
Did you watch any utube training for your software?
Did you return to a prior subject with a new lens or technical approach to specifically improve on a prior attempt?
Did you consider shooting in RAW?
Are you aggressively culling your multiple versions of one subject down to only the best one (or two); and then, only editing that best version to completion?

UHH Participation

Did you ask for help?
Did you answer a request for help?
Did you share any images?
Did you comment on any images?
Do you use the new Digest format?
Should you skip the Digest and use the <Newest Topics> button instead?
Did you resize the pixel resolution of your image posts to UHH, or to your email attachments?

Life

Did you make a photography-based trip?
Did you shoot any film?
Did you display your images on a digital frame or TV?
Did you print any images?
Did you sell any images?
Did you enter a photography competition?
Did you change to mirrorless?

Every journey, even those that take years to complete, begins with the very first step. Don't let a knowledge of the length, or just a fear of not reaching the end, stop you from ever even starting.

Enjoy the holidays and stay safe!

I'm actually not working on goals, but on a new project. It's called "The World as Seen Through My Windshield." Pretty interesting so far. I think it will be pretty popular with my students. I'd include an early example, but have learned that it's prohibited. Plus, it's turning out to be pretty technique-intensive. I've got exposure pretty well conquered (most are night photographs), but I'm still working to get sharpness from a moving car to a point that won't offend the members here. (The kids like it already.)

Since I'm dependent on my driver, there can sometimes be several days between outings.

No. Guess we were accustomed to living on the edge. We played with fire in chemistry class, too.

Photography is full of self-taught practitioners. I have been in two classes (well...a workshop and a class) with a published photographer who also represents one of the "big three." He openly admits to being self-taught. I like his classes, and I like him. But I've learned to weigh what he says. Especially when he discusses complex processes. Because sometimes he becomes more procedural than logical. And...he admits that there is usually more than one way to do a thing, but he only teaches one way.

The same thing was true in the two photography classes I took many years ago. Most of the big ideas were taught spot-on correct. But some of the details were absolutely wrong. Usually because the instructor didn't understand the underlying mathematics.

No glass filter is going to reliably protect a lens from catastrophic damage. But it will protect from careless scratches or spills.

I fell with my camera a year and a half ago. Landed on the hood and pushed it back over the barrel of the lens. The filter ended up with some grass stuck to it. There was no damage to the lens or the camera. DO NOT TRY TO TELL ME that filters and hoods are useless for protection. (And yes...the lens cap was off because I was actually taking pictures.)

I have a UV protect filter on one of my lenses. If I decide to use a CPL filter, should I remove the
UV filter or is it OK to use both at the same time?

I don't use a CPL very often, but I do like to have a clear protective filter ahead of my front lens element. I do not see any benefit in using a second filter when using a CPL.

I'm happy that generic batteries provide acceptable service to you. They have not done that for me.

After observing a quite embarrassing exchange with a brand new member who dared to pist some photographs in an introductory post here yesterday, I went on a search to find the actual posted written rules forbidding photographs in this forum. I looked in all obvious spots for a specific ruling. I intentionally omitted looking anywhere that required any level of mind reading or ExtraSensory Perception. I found nothing. Nada. Zilch.

In fact, in the rules for this section, the very first specific instruction I found covered not only "How to post a picture," but also how to "Store Original," in order to post it with higher resolution.

My intent here is not to pick a fight. I'm sure this post is well along a path of being moved. But if this forum is to survive, it is time to start focusing on what matters. Photograps are generally not evil on a photography forum.

ALL of the third party batteries/battery grips I have used have had problems of some kind ! Period.

My experience has been the same. The one single exception has been a Meike grip that came with a used D500 which I bought in October. It seems so far to work as it should.

I'm having to learn to be happy with third party EN-EL3e batteries in my D90 IR camera. Those seem to have been discontinued by Nikon.

50% is my limit for a used lens.

That is a very reasonable guideline, and it is the rule we followed for appliances years ago when I workrd in a repair shop. I repaired Lionel and American Flyer trains. American Flyer had been put of business for several years, and we got lots of vontage and classic Lionel for repair. Much of it was not replaceable. Some of it was not easily replaceable. Some of it was in really desperate condition. In those cases, the owner had to make a decision that might or might not seem rational to anyone else.

Anybody have or read the latest book or books by Scott on Photoshop/Lightroom ? I really like his style, esp. his wit, and would like to bone up on the latest features before I download the latest LR/PS bundle on my new computer. Thanks in advance... Bob

Hi Bob. I can't help you with the book, but can validate your question. I just attended a two-day live training class a couple of weeks ago. The latest update is very substantial...lots of changes.

Also make sure that whatever you pursue matches your version...Mac or PC. There are some significant differences in what the user interface presents to the user. Once you get past those, everything is pretty much the same. But some of us PC users were getting frustrated because we couldn't access things the way the instructor was trying to show us with his Mac.
