Transitioning to the Canon RF system

When I went to the RF system I got the RP for full frame (I don't do a lot of full frame.), simplified but not stunted and takes good pictures.
Then I got the R7 (R equivalent of 7DII) for my bird photography, and it is Excellent+.

I still have EFs= 5Div, 7DII, 80D, 90D. I will be thinning the herd, starting with the 90D. I may get rid of all the EFs, unless someone in the family wants one. All my EF lenses work on the RF bodies with the adapters, I have two.

I have been thinking just now (dangerous habit to get into) and maybe this year I will just get rid of all the EF bodies, some of my EF lenses-the ones I also have in RF and upgrade the RP to one of the higher end RF bodies. Should I keep the 5Div as a backup? Or maybe give it to our daughter. Jasmine has been using a T2i since it was her 2012 High School Graduation gift. Now she is a Pediatric Resident and mostly uses her cell phone. After residency, her life will not be so hectic and she might get back into photography as a hobby.

That will leave me using R7, a high-end RF FF and Sony RX10iv with my two adapters (one is the control ring model) and a pile of mixed EF lenses and my RF lenses. I also have 3 older bridge cameras I got from Good Will for $20 each=one in my car, one in my wife's car, one in the lock box on my street legal mobility scooter. Be out and about when suddenly a picture opportunity pops up-I have "a camera", besides my almost antique Panasonic ZS6 that lives in my shirt or jacket pocket full time.

Then there is my Wife's Canon SX50, now a few models behind but still a great bridge camera.

I think I need to make a cup of coffee and read or watch TV before I make some camera dealer a new millionaire. I am not going out photographing in the chilly rain today.

Enjoy your coffee Jerry and if you just can't help yourself with the gear reduction process, I am available for adoption.

Anyone who has exclusively gone to a cell phone from as DSLR is not likely to go back. Talk to her before deciding.

It would seem the decision is C L E A R ...

1, Dump all the DSLRs. ALL -- not some --> A L L.

2, Dump all the EF / EF-S lenses that duplicate RF / RF-S lenses you already own.

3, Carefully review your usage statistics / patterns of any non duplicative EF / EF-S lenses and make an informed decision where that SLR-style lens should remain or be replaced.

You've got some great DSLR equipment listed. But, in my opinion, there is no need to keep any of it as 'backup'. Best to either sell or give away so someone else may use and enjoy them. Only keep the EF lenses you still use and don't have an RF copy of. That's what I have been doing slowly over the past year...

Your daughter might enjoy moving up to the 90D, 7D MII or 5D MIV. Rather than dump the EF series lenses put a great package together for her, if you think that she wouldn't mind second hand.
That way no expense for her and getting excellent glass that will grow with her. Then if she wants to go further all that glass is 100% transferable to the RF platform and to start all she would need is a R body and an adapter. Totally seamless.
So far I still have no RF glass as my EF glass does all I want and is sharper than I can hold.
This is the beauty of the seamless transition from EF to RF and no required loss at all and just an adapter.

We already have two sons. And the elder is named Michael.

Don't need to adopt you.

She just doesn't have time to devote to photography. And around the hospital, almost all photos are done with cell phones or tablets that have decent cameras. Only a couple of labs have real cameras or huge exam rigs with cameras built in.

She says after she finishes becoming a full-fledged Doctor and gets off the "indentured servant" pay scale, she will be able to afford pretty much what ever she wants.
Not to mention, she still sometimes talks about paying us back the big $$$$$$ we paid to get her through Pre-Med at UCLA and the help we gave at UVA Med School.

We tell her to not worry about paying us back. Just team up with our oldest, Michael and care for our middle child Jon who is special needs with the cognitive ability of a bright 5yo. The house goes into a trust with Jasmine and Michael as salaried trustees and custodians of Jon after Debra and I are gone. They have the choice of one of them (and family?) moving in and caring for Jon, or getting a live in hire to watch him while they supervise.

That is my first thought also. But???

Yes, that would work. Though, Jasmine is too busy to do anything but carry her cell phone as a Pediatric Resident at one of LA County's larger medical centers (Harbor UCLA - one of UCLA Med School's teaching hospitals). And she says she will be able to afford whatever she wants when her career takes off. If she even wants to do photography as a hobby anymore by then. So I should just sell or trade for the RF gear I want as part of thinning the herd.

Her life will likely change significantly when she finishes her residency.

Thow not guaranteed, depending on what & when she likes to shoot might spark a new enthusiasm in photography for her. See what she might want as far as the lenses go & dump the rest that you don't use so someone might get some use out of them. Happy holidays to you & yours!

Most definitely.
Maybe she will even like little kids and get married. Then we can be Grandparents to something besides her cat.

She told us, when in Jr High, "Don't expect grandkids from me. Little kids bug me." (she tried babysitting)
Now when asked why a Pediatrician "At med school I found out the older a patient is the more they talk back and argue and the less they follow directions. The little ones, if not crying, just want to play and cuddle, then the parents take care of the meds and following directions."
Also, Jasmine is petite, so the little ones she can move and handle without help. Unlike Mom who is my height, always an athletic tom boy and even tried to become a kicker on her HS football team back before feminists made it a fairly regular possibility. Debra now has to wear wrist braces a lot of the time because she strained them moving patients instead of calling for help in the OR or Lab (OR Charge, Surgical and Lab Nurse for 30 years). All that time on her feet also have her in special shoes and sometimes ankle braces.

I lucked out, teaching didn't do those things to me. The four left knee injuries, starting in Nam and the recent sciatic nerve pinch of the lower back and left leg, give me a limp at times and got me a letter from my Primary Care Doctor that I needed a mobility scooter. That just might get me some money back at tax time. I got an ADA spec, street legal mobility scooter with seats for two, does 30mph (new CA speed limit for Seniors and Disabled on electric scooters), supposed to be able to climb a 30° slope, a lockable storage box + I mounted a cargo pack on the seat back. It is 5' long 2.6' wide, three wheeled, 500lb load limit, bright red with chrome and black trim, full light package for night riding and at the wife's "urging" I added a whip antenna with US and Vietnam Vet flags + some extra reflectors on all sides to help drivers see me. She also insists I wear a motorcycle helmet since she saw too many bikers etc. in the Emergency Room and OR with head injuries. My helmet from before I donated my last motorcycle to charity was past its date (yes, they have expiration dates) so I bought a new full coverage, flip up model in the same red as the scooter, then added a stick on light to the back of the helmet for night riding.
