I think it is more striking and approximates the actual colors. I will work on the set and see if I can get a more balanced look. Thanks.

It really does look more natural. I need to work on color balances on the reds.

Driving across Kansas on rt 36 on a frosty early morning. Just before dawn I passed this old farmhouse and had to whip around to take a few shots. As I had recently purchased an HDR program I did three shot bursts at one stop intervals to see what I could do with the program. My aim was to get the farmhouse as true to what I was seeing as possible. That slightly exaggerated the sky but not too much. The Great Plains can really do a show with sunrise/sunset scenes without much help.

No 1 was using the HDR program.
No 2 was minimally processed using PhotoNinja and GIMP.
What do you think?

Very nice, was this a "Serendipity" shot or did you wait for the light? Either way it is a lovely image.

Not having a lot of time to work on all of them, I picked the first to see if it was possible to bring a bit more detail to the photograph. Here's the result.

Now, the disclaimer: I have no idea what the subjects themselves looked like. So, things may look a bit different than the original. However, through the use of a few custom sharpening techniques, the application of tonal masks, etc. I was able to bring a bit more detail out of the original.

The processing was somewhat minimal. There's more that could be done but I was just after a proof of concept.

I would say your enhancements are impressive! The originals I posted are visually accurate to my eyes as far as lighting and color saturation are concerned but your enhancements show a lot of detail and color not visible to my eyes (I am approaching 80 years old so cataracts etc do somewhat come into play here). Thanks for giving me some things to consider.

I have to agree with the majority but I would have no idea how to improve the lighting

Thanks, I too don't have a lot of experience in this but look forward to adding to my skills.

I'm in the group that finds this interesting but lacks lighting. Lighting these is a bit difficult but the reward is greater definition and detail.

Thanks Bob. These were done with the light over our kitchen table and one flashlight. I look forward to experimenting with various lighting schemes.
