Here are some photos I took today. The material is velvet so you can see the small size of the snowflakes. Still a lot of work to do on my technique.

I used my Nikon D850 and 105mm lens on a tripod. Caught the snowflakes on the red velvet and put it into a small lightbox with adjustable LED lighting.

Suggestions are appreciated.

Steve

How did you keep it from melting?

I set up outside on my deck and let everything cool down. I caught the snowflakes on a patch of red velvet. When I got a good one I stuck it in the light box, focused and pressed the shutter. You can’t breath on the snowflakes after you capture them. By the way it is 20 deg here at the present.

Steve, Which small lightbox with adjustable LED lighting would you recommend?

The one I have is a 20cm cube and says Qyx inc Photo Light Box LED Ring light & 3 Modes on the box. My Granddaughter bought it for me at Christmas. I don't know where she bought it.

Here is a link on Amazon for one that is similar.

https://www.amazon.com/Glendan-Portable-Photography-Lighting-Backdrops/dp/B081L59XLL

I have a larger box with LED light stripes. I like the ring better; the stripes show up in reflections on some subjects. And the small box lets you get close with your macro lens.

The light box sits on a small table with the camera lens in the hole in the top. I use a rail nodal slide attached to the camera and mounted on the ball head on the tripod to get an offset to hang the camera vertically.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Steve

Steve, Thanks for your immediate and helpful response. I just place the light box in my Amazon cart.
