Whatever you think you’re doing, the camera is always focusing on a single point. What you want is the ability to select that spot yourself not have the camera select it for you.
Use AirDrop with Bluetooth on both devices turned on.
And both devices on the same Wifi network.
Just Google “How use Apple AirDrop.”

If you have Dropbox, store your LR catalog there.

Keep your catalog in Dropbox on the startup disc on your iMac and it will be then available in Dropbox on your MacBook.
Apple’s Aperture (RIP sigh) was able to display the focus.

Try a faster shutter speed, especially if you have plenty of light as you so here.
I have LR 6.14 and CS 6. Haven’t moved on to Classic subscription. YET. it’s only a matter of time and my motivation to push past my inertia.
My catalog has grown and grown with no hint of a slowdown.
I use smart previews on my laptop so I do not have to be tethered to my external drives.
When I am done editing a folder, I delete the smart previews.
The Canon 28-80 2.8 L lens is a classic.
(That means old).
But still a great lens, especially for the money!
