It's true Nikon no longer sells parts to independent repair facilities, but Nikon is not the only place to get repair parts. I have sources all over the world, from Texas to Chicago and all the way to India and China. In fact, I get some parts from the same supplier as Nikon. I pay a little more than they do for them but I make up for it on the labor.

Granted, there are some repairs that simply need to be done by a Nikon facility, but by and large, most repairs can be handled with ease, gray market or not.

Thanks for the quick response, Rick. You obviously have to go the extra step or 2 to complete Nikon repairs. Could you give us an idea of what repairs are best left to Nikon?

How does the non-Nikon repair shop get spare parts? Nikon's stated policy is that they will not sell parts to non-Nikon service providers. Nikon has really tightened down the screws. If you can't get parts, you can't repair cameras, right?

I haven't used any of my warranties and since everything is out from under the warranty, I guess I never will. This includes my 28-75 grey market f/2.8 Tammy that I bought (on Ebay) from Canada in order to save almost $200 (US).

Nikon USA will not touch your non-USA equipment if and when it needs to be repaired after warranty expires. Don't bother sending it to Nikon Service for CLA - they will return it and charge you for return shipping. Of course, you can ship it to Nikon Canada if it needs servicing. That beats shipping it back to Japan. I buy Nikon new or refurbished thus ensuring that Nikon Service USA will work on my cameras and lenses should they need it. The D5300 I just bought for my son that died after 3 months was a refurb. Nikon fixed it and will continue to cover it after the expiration of the 90-day warranty period. To some us, knowing Nikon Service will be there when we need them is reassuring - specially since Nikon no longer provides parts to non-Nikon service providers.

Look at a factory refurbished D5300. Very little difference between it and a new D5500 except the price. It has a great 24mpx sensor, is small and lightweight (for a dslr) and makes great images. B&H and Adorama usually have them for around $500 with a 18-55 lens.

If you decide on a kit (body with lens), ask them to substitute the 18-140 lens. It's a really good walking around lens that gives you the equivalent of a 27-210mm in full-frame.

My Nikon D5300 just returned from Nikon Service when shutter and/or sensor failed. It was repaired under warranty. Took about 3 weeks total days away from home.

Personally I worry about quality. I see bigger newer and sharper TV for sale and are they defeating us on the backside? Some of the TVs are so sharp it is incredible. But the transmission is not up to snuff.

The ultra high quality displays may force video producers to go back to more expensive cameras and lenses. You get what you pay for. Based on the 4K Ultra HD TVs I've seen, second-rate photos and video will simply not be acceptable.

I hate to buy these things because after spending the money, they don't solve the problem. Going back several days, I could have paid $40 for a program, but I found a free alternative. That didn't work, either. I've been working with this MS tech for 11 days, and we're up to five pages of messages now. When he suggested Linux, I think that was a desperation move.

The problem is that I have backup folders in an EFI partition, although there's no logical way they could have gotten there. Apparently, this happens occasionally. I finally managed to access the partition and give it a letter name, but since Windows is protecting it, I have to get another program to delete those files. In order to do that, I have to boot from a flash drive using a program called Partition Assistant. I cannot boot from the flash drive.

Jerry, have you been elevated to Level II or Level III support? It's been my experience that MS Level I techs will not elevate your problem until they finally admit they cannot help you. And that seldom happens. Good luck - JRH

47th Street is currently featuring an Opteka 500mm f/8 manual lens with a 2X TC for $119. Has anyone bought this lens or other Opteka lenses? With the TC attached, that seems to say that the f/8 would become f/16. You'd have to be using it on a really sunny day. Any thoughts?

Great shots! It's amazing that these old warbirds are still flying after 70+ years. There's something about the whine of a Rolls-Merlin engine that jets just can't match. Hoping you can continue attending Goodwood and provide us more of these timeless photos.

Thanks for your info. I have been looking at B&H and Adorama since you mentioned them. Now I just have to make my decision.

Don't leave out Cameta Camera. As stated above, they extend the 90-day Nikon warranty to one year. That looks like it's going to save me a whole lot of dollars since I won't have to pay for the repair of my son's D5300 that failed 3 weeks after the Nikon warranty expired. Good fortune to happenstance on my part. Perhaps, good fortune by good planning on your part.

Has anyone one bought a refurbished camera from Nikon? Were there any problems with the camera? Did you have to send it back? Do they have high shutter counts?

I see that Nikon is offering 10% off their refurbished cameras and this may be a great deal if I know that I'm not getting a camera that has 10,000 shots on it already. I know they are gone over by the Nikon techs but a very used camera won't be worth the money. Is there any type of set standards that keep it from being a very used camera?

Thanks for all your info!!!

I bought a Nikon refurb D5300 for my son as a graduation present. It had about 100 actuations on it. It came with a 90-day Nikon warranty. 3 weeks past the 90-days, it died. I don't know what the final resolution is on this since the camera will be shipped to Nikon in NY on Monday. My son found numerous citations on the web about this same camera with the same problem. Hope Nikon is generous and fixes it no-charge. Waiting with fingers crossed.

Well I think I have the proper solution. After reading some of your great responses I think it would be best to learn my D3200 inside and out, while at the same time sharpening my new era DSLR skills. I have found there to be a few differences mostly in how the camera works and also learning to trust the technology. I remember doing crazy things like backing ISO 100 slide film out of my only camera to put ISO 400 B/W in for the football game after school. You had to be able to do this without a dark room, while riding on the team bus. Oh yeah and not expose a single frame of the slide film because it had shots on it already. Then write the number of shots exposed on the can so you would not forget when you reloaded it....hahaha... I digress.

Lee, once you are sure that the 3200 is no longer meeting your needs, I would suggest that you rent a D610 and try it out. You may find that it is too complicated, doesn't meet certain specific photographic needs, or just doesn't "feel right" in your hands. You may find that a D7200 better meets your needs (it will work with ALL Nikkor AF lenses since it has an internal focus motor!). In any case, try it before you buy it! Cheers - JRH

I have a relative who understands this computer crap a lot better than me. I still don't have Windows 10 and can't figure out why. But anyway he said that during the installation Microsoft turns off a program or maybe thats not the proper term, it may not be a program but maybe it's a switch of some sort and this allows them to know what sites you visit. He said it is possible to turn this switch back on to block this info from going back to Microsoft. I don't know how but I'm sure there are people here that do.

It's called TRACKING. It works through your browser to "track" your browsing activity. Firefox has a kill switch for it as does Chrome. I don't use the new Windows browser - but I understand from reading tech articles that it too has a kill switch that turns tracking off. I would definitely recommend using the "KILL" switch. JRH
