I second You Tube TV. It allows you to Record & watch later. Do not confuse YouTube with YouTubeTV. They are different.

Try Vuescan by Hamrick Software. It will work with most scanners. I use the pro version but there is a trial version available as well.

Create a separate partition for /home. In case of an OS failure, boot from an install disk and replace the OS but save the original /home. I backup monthly and put it in a safe deposit box. In addition I use timeshift to recover if necessary.

You do not need to completely reload software to update. I always put the home folder in a separate partition. Then I can reload, when necessary, the OS and preserve the 'home' partition. Then I keep all my documents, photos, music, etc. I very seldom need to do this as I can usually just do updates to stay up to date with the current OS.

Try gnucash. http://gnucash.org/ It is free and I believe it will import Quicken files. We use it in linux but it is supposed to have a windows version as well.

The old icebreaker "Mackinaw" was in Mackinaw City when I was there. I went aboard and learned about icebreaker technology from about 50 years ago. As an ex navy guy it was interesting.

I prefer linux mint, the cinnamon version. It is similar in style to the old Windows menu system. I hate icons. One suggestion: optionally install /home in a separate partition. It makes future updates much easier. Not necessary but helpful in the future. Simple to do in the install menu. Just choose 'something else' when asked where to install during setup.

Instead of MS Office try LibreOffice. It does everything MS Office does except cost money. It also includes Base, a replacement for Access. It is fully compatible with MS Office.

No one has mentioned linux. It has many options for editing. Linux itself is free and so is the optional software. Load it onto your IMac if you have enough disk space or on to an old computer. You can dual boot, meaning linux will load on unused disk space and when you start the computer you have a choice, your original operating system or linux. When you create a linux boot image on a dvd you can try it, and install it or not. If you elect to not install it just reboot, remove the dvd and return to the original system completely unharmed.
