Visiting Upper Pennsula and Mackinaw Island

Planning a visit and wonder if you all have some must see places in that area. Appreciate your help.

Of course Mackinac Island. Fort Michiliackinac just before the Bridge on the south side. in the UP (upper peninsula) Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks. In Marquette, see Presque Isle, And the National Ski Hall of Fame if you enjoy Nordic Skiing. Then over to Copper Harbor. Be sure to stop and have a Pastie for lunch or Dinner somewhere. I prefer mine with rutabagas and gravy or ketchup. This is the land of Heowatha and the Shining Big Sea Waters. It is also the land where Henry Ford milled the Birch lumber for the classic Ford Woodies. At one time Copper and Iron Ore were mined here. I spent 6 years at K I Sawyer AFB back in the 70s. Spring and fall are almost as short as summer but winter is 9 months long. But, Wonderful country. enjoy your stay.

If you're willing to take a trip further north, a trip to the locks at Sault Ste. Marie worthwhile. Many great spots in the U.P.

Near Marquette, Big Bay de Noc. Beautiful lighthouse and view of the bay.
Pictured rocks must be seen from a boat. However, it's one of the major draws.

Take in the numerous waterfalls. Many are a short walk from the road. Wagner Falls is picturesque.
Don't forget the south side of the Upper Peninsula:
1) Take the ferry to Mackinaw Island. Its fun to taste the fudge at various shops. Rent a bike for a nice ride around the island. There are no cars.
2) Visit Kitch-iti-kipi, "The Big Spring" outside of Manistique.
3) Northern Sun winery is unique in that it makes all its wine from cold-hardy grapes, grown in their vineyard. Say Hi to Dave and Suzy and enjoy some of their wines.

The old icebreaker "Mackinaw" was in Mackinaw City when I was there. I went aboard and learned about icebreaker technology from about 50 years ago. As an ex navy guy it was interesting.

Mackinac Island is a “do not miss”. A different world of a horse driven era. Go to lunch at the magnificent Grand Hotel , scene of the wonderful movie “Somewhere in Time”.

ORpilot, thanks for that information. I'm trying to plan day trips and hope you can help me with that. We'll be staying either in Marquette or Mackinaw City mid July. Definitely will take a day to tour Mackinaw Island, but other than that, I'm having difficulty figuring how to fit in the places you have mentioned. Appreciate your help.

I really want to see a "Tar Heel" meet a "Yooper"! The Island is a big hotel. The Upper is a different place all together. Reportedly, Rod Serling rejected the place as a site for a story, too weird. A fun game for tourists to play is "find a yooper", they hide from tourists, if they do exist.

Go for it...I always wanted to take a right turn at Duluth and keep on driveing through Canada around Lake Superior and back to Sault Sainte Marie. If you do go to the Keweenaw Penn. Be sure and stop at Hilltop restaurant the top of the hill in L'anse. Thy have the best sweet rolls. They are about the size of a dinner plate.
