In my humble opinion, in the long run, I believe that "Artificial intelligence" photographs and/or other forms of Art will be regulated and must be declared.... as such... Similarly to what we have in the arena of what is known as "fault advertising" today in the Marketplace....

Already, earlier this year. There is case history where artificial intelligence created art work was refused by the U.S. Office of Copyright. Personally, I believe that that is only the beginning of regulation in this area.

There will always be a market for seemingly good -- But cheap art, and that won't never change.

But there are also other individuals who are willing to pay the high dollar for the genuine product and that won't ever change... also

Markets in both areas will continue. But ultimately, truth in advertising and marketing will be the regulation.

IMHO

Thanks for the replies, but my real question is, will the companies that hire photographers start taking the cheaper way out and start generating AI photos and stop using paid photographers? What are your thoughts?

Yes... some companies will always take the cheapest way out

According to an email from John Greengo, there are firmware updates for the following cameras:

There is also a recent update for the Z8.

John Greengo...... May not be up-to-date on the Canon R5

I am a cannon R5 owner... I watch the updates on a very regular basis, and as of 5 minutes ago. The current version is 1.8.1, which was the announced update in march of 2023.

I would look forward to an update. But, I cannot find out where it has occurred

This is my first attempt at creating an upscaling workflow using AI.

I'm using the very same software and models as in previous post in which I created a bunch of "street shots" renderings (see https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/tpr?p=14107741&t=783755), but his time I used an actual photo to guide the AI to create a new one with 4x resolution.

As in that post, the software is 100% FREE, so no paid software is really necessary to perform upscaling of photos.

Theory of operation: the software uses SDXL model to create a latent representation of the original image and then it renders a completely new image that looks like the first one. I did a 4x upscale, but it could be 10x or 100x...

Note: The positive and negative prompts are empty, so no alteration is made to the image. I could easily add some prompt to make substantial changes, like putting people, changing the trees, change the scene to a night scene or putting it on the surface of another planet.

There are some defects, but I'm working on improving the process.

This is the explanation of the images:

Image 1: the original shot in 2003 with a Canon PowerShot A2 (1600 x 1200 px) in Italy
Image 2: the upscaled version to 6400 x 4800 px (stored as "Original" for you to analyse)
Image 3: the workflow I used

I'll post more images as I make upgrades to the procedure.
This is my first attempt at creating an upscaling ... (show quote)

Somehow I missed the source of where the update scale on software is located.

Can you please repost that information kindly?

Thanks in advance.

That's a very good question.
I think we all enjoy seeing the images but in the truest sense they are not photographs and probably should have their own category.
I look forward to seeing what others have to say.

FYI: This is a "general" post and is NOT directed to any one poster...

AND... This is my 2¢, and I would like to offer the following on this thread...

In one post here, the following was said:
.... "After that, I started to read about many cities and counties passing laws and other restrictions concerning when and where one could fly drones. ... Many local municipalities now have drone ordinances restricting drone use..."

My first response is "NO"... locals and/or states can not "restrict drone actual use"...
...... and, local and/or state authorities can NOT "restrict" where drones can be flown.

Some laws can be enforced... but not where and when...
.... ALSO... local laws and/or state laws can NOT supersede FAA regulations... and local governments and/or state governments can NOT pass laws which "Blanket Regulate" the use of drones in their jurisdiction....... I invite you to visit the below site and below information:

Michael Singer v. City of Newton (City Drone Ordinance Nullified!)
Below is a "Pod Cast" from an organization known as "Drone U" ... a well-respected group on "Drone Education"
https://www.thedroneu.com/bonus-episode-michael-singer-v-city-newton-city-drone-ordinance-nullified/

There are many other examples such as the above which could be cited...

Another comment which was posted was the following:
.... "And something many do not know is that drones cannot be flown in many of the more beautiful places like federal, state, and local parks...."

The above is also not accurate in that... "Only the FAA" regulates the "air space" over all locations... and therefore, drones may "fly over" "beautiful ... federal, state, and local parks"......

BUT, what one must consider is that the owners of these lands (federal, state, and local park) can and do regulate the activities on the actual 'lands' (not the airspace) of these locations... therefore, they can prohibit the actual takeoff from such locations... but they cannot regulation the actual flights themself if they flight actually travels over such lands... However..... they can NOT stop anyone from 'flying over' such a location, for this is considered to be "federal airspace" and it is the FAA who regulates who can "fly over" a given location...

Now, with the above said........ and me being a retired law enforcement officer... I will tell you that there are "tons of people" in the public and in the area of "enforcement" who do NOT really know and/or understand these laws... because they are not trained in "Federal Regulations"

AND...... YES, they will give you a hard time, and will have the upper hand on "threats" and "legal" enforcement behaviors (although it may be wrong)... it could be a losing battle...

Moral of this story... Be Educated, Be informed, Have Documentation, Offer "polite information" and then "back off" to "fight your battle" at a "higher level" at a later time, with a higher authority... such as Dr. Michel Singer did in the above listing...

The bottom line....... is to have fun, be safe, and be polite, but know the system and/or laws

Morning, Hoggers. I typically travel with a MacBook Pro and download my photos from SD card to the laptop every night, then back that up to a portal SanDisk SSD drive. I also keyword my photos every night so I can remember what I saw, where I saw, etc. Then I wipe the card and start over the next day. But this laptop is heavy, and I'm trying to lighten my load. I could get a MacBook Air which would save some weight, but I'd like to eliminate that completely and figure out a way to handle my photos while I'm on the road. For those of you who have that scenario, what do you do? Do you use a separate SD card for each day? Do you download to an iPad or another device? How do you track what you saw? I can use a travel diary, I guess....any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

=========================================================

Dear JC...

FYI ~~ Only, this is just my current methodology

I travel with a DELL Laptop, a Canon EOS R5, and a Samsung S23 Ultra cellphone with shoots 50Meg RAW
.... Have an upcoming trip planned to Europe, the North area, and Mediterian, ending in Italy for 6 wks

I have arranged for 'cards' to have 2-1TB CFExpress, which will stay in my R5 and never be erased
.... I have 10 SD Cards ranging from 256kb to 125kb, along with 'card cases' which hold all

Images taken on my Cell Phone will be auto-loaded into my cloud account as taken...
... Images taken on my R5, will be offloaded onto my Laptop nightly
.... Finished images will be uploaded either from my Cell or Laptop which has a '5G cell modem' also

In addition to the above, additional "Timely" backup will be sent to the 'companion' 2TB SSD Drive

YES ~ I have the extra weight of the 3.5LBs of the Laptop but, that stays in my cruise stateroom at all times

As for me... "BACKUP" and redundancy are "KEY" -- That is "Just ME!"
I once had my laptop "die" on a trip to Paris, France, and swore I would always have an alternative.
... As you can see ~ there are "TONS" of redundancy in the above for sure.
... I do firmly appreciate everyone's own approach and what they do.

Hope you find your solutions and by all means, have a wonderful trip...

Hello Folks,
I am looking at a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR With EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Kit For $566.74, from NFNebraska. The description indicates that this is new.
So I have 2 questions
Has anyone heard of NFNabraska as a store? They seem to sell a lot of things.
Is there a way to tell if a camera or lens is for the USA market or the gray market?

Thanks for any input.
Dennis

==================================================

Beware Dennis.....

First, I am making the assumption when you list the name of "NFNebraska" ~~ that their company URL would actually be "NFNebraska.com"............ OH... Silly me...

So, I went to that website...... went to the bottom of their page, and clicked on "About Us"... It will take you to a page, which lists the company information at the bottom of the page which is...

Contact Us:
E-mail: service@abtdiscountshop.com
Phone: +1 614-556-4499
Location: 4159 Payne Rd, Pleasanton, CA 94588, USA

The above is a direct "copy and paste" from their page......

"BEWARE GOST-Rider"... When you "Google Map" the above address, it is a 'single story, personal residence'

Ha, Ha, Ha............ apparently this is a 'drop ship company' if... Legit at all

NOW..... Also, did a check of the website: www://trustpilot.com
....... The is no listing for this company on Trust Pilot

There is the old saying: "Beware of the Bride who is tooooo beautiful" and I think that fits here.

As for me..... I would make the personal decision to "move on" and "not buy"

IMHO ~~ only

Many of you have likely seen examples or tried it yourself. In this picture of an early morning sunrise on Maui's Haleakala peak, it is high enough to see the sun rise over the tops of the clouds. For this image, the rocks up close are so dark, there is nothing to see in them, and the sunrise is with a clear sky showing a bit of a rising sun, but is not very spectacular.

Generative Fill to the rescue. Of course, those that insist upon a picture has to be the real thing will cry foul. But if you just want to make something that appeals to you (call it art), this is legal too.

Here is the original. Not exactly ready to hang on the wall. Rocks too dark and sky too bright with not any color.

For the 2nd image:

Step 1 with Generative Fill in Photoshop was to draw a selection completely around the rocks going out into the clouds a little bit. The key words I used for Generative Fill were "volcanic rocks" and let it replace the dark rocks with what it though I wanted.

Step 2 with Generative Fill in Photoshop was to draw a selection including the sky and slightly into the clouds. And the keywords I used were "subdued early morning sunrise" and let it give me a different sky and a much subdued sun.

For the 3rd image:

Step 3 with Generative Fill in Photoshop, decided that I wanted a wider angle view. Using Photoshop's Crop Tool, extended the right side a bit and drew a selection around the new area to the right and into the left side of the image just a bit and let it run another time with no keywords. And then repeated a second time to make it even wider.

After watching any YT photographer for a while, I give them a rest. They all seem to be somewhat repetitious. The ones I watch give good information, but it's the same person presenting in the same way. It's the same with the computer channels. It's nice to take a break from one and try others.

Love it... McWane...

As an avid DSLR user for 50+ years, and now Mirrorless, I will be 'moving' to the Ultra next week...
... Have used the Samsung Note 9 now for 4 years but with an upcoming trip to Egypt, and similar places on a 70-day cruise in Aug 2023, I have decided that the use of a 'cell phone' instead of the traditional $$$ camera might be a much 'safer' alternative......

With that said, I have done much research on the internet and via youtube, and I truly believe that the Samsung S23, along with the Ultra now, in many ways, is actually better than the iPhone 14.

I look forward to my upcoming new adventures... as you are doing now......
