I wanted to test my tripod and have found this recomendation. I bought lazer pointer and tested my tripod. As I could understand my tripod is good. My question is: "Anybody tried to test their tripods and how did you do it?"

Years ago when I was at a lecture the pro photographer, who was giving the lecture, said your tripod should be strong enough to hold a bowling ball. Now I never tried that, but he did make the point. :)

OK. So I've just flown home from New York to SF. Had a very nice lunch before we left at Becco on 46th between 8th and 9th on Restaurant Row. Highly recommended.

Attached is a pic taken with my iPhone 4S. I'm fairly pleased with it within limitations. Would I trade out my Canon DSLR for a smart phone camera? Not in a heartbeat. But, since it was with me I thought I would test it.

You guys judge whether it's a viable replacement for a DSLR...

I don't think the focus is very crisp.

How long will it take the marketing boys to get the shutterless camera out. We already have it...video on your DSLR...TV, it's called a frame grabber...When it happens the earth will move..All that DLSR, etc , that go kerplunk ,will be obsolete...It'll be another bonanza!!!

I don't care what they come out with next...at my age the Nikon D 7100 was my last and final purchase.

Each has it's place. The cell phone camera function will complete with $100 P&S cameras. They will compete in the market with people who don't want to spend more than $200 for a camera. With current technology, they will not have the range & flexibility of the DSLR. Those who disagree will probably not learn to use the features of the mid to top of line DSLRs anyway. I think the only debate is in how an individual sees photography. There have always been snapshot photographer. They are only part of the DSLR market to look cool, because they won't ever use the full capability of the camera. They will still spend money for the best in order to show off. I don't think Nikon/Canon have much to fear from the cell phone.

Dudes... You are being squeezed out by technology. Just look at the pictures your average smart-phone takes! You'd better do something to keep customers or go the way of the film camera. (Reducing prices comes to mind as a start.)
My Niece's $500 smart phone takes as good a pictures as my Canon SXi. Read the hand writing on the wall dudes...

See what size enlargements you can get from a smartphone and then talk to me. 20 x 30's are not a problem with my real camera...can your niece claim that??? I doubt it!!!

I have been on the board for a while, mostly on the "Chit Chat" forum, but I finally have a question for the photographers.

I just bought a D7100 bundle for around $1600. 18-140 zoom, and 55-300 zoom, and some accessories included.

I am 62 and grew up with a dark room as a kid, so I know the difference between F stops and depth of field, ISO (used to be DIN in film,) etc., etc.

What I need are some suggestions for books on how to use the D7100. I have watched a number of YouTube videos, which are fine, but I want something I can grab and go to if I need some clarification.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

[quote=Orca]I have been shooting with a Panasonic FX200 for a little over 1 year. Have been looking at two packages.
1. Includes AFT-S DX 18-140mm F/ 3.5 - 5.6 GE D VR lens
2. $50. More Includes AF-S DX 18-55mm F/ 3.5 - 5.6 VRll
AF-S DX 55-300mm F/ 4.5- 6.0 VRll zoom

# 2 looks better to me. What am I missing

1. Can be purchased at two reputable dealers
2. At Costco w/90 day refund policy[/quo

I have the D 7100 and use the Tamron 18 to 270 VR lens. This lens has all the range I ever need. I don't like to change lenses on a digi camera outside and maybe get dust on the sensor. Then on my Nikon D 7000 I have with a Nikon 11 to 18 lens. So neither lens ever comes off either camera while I am outside...because of dust or dirt hitting the sensor.

Ricardooo...... Any recommendation on how to make it better bearing in mind that these pics are few of the very first ones I shot with the D7100. I did use autofocus.
Thanks

Two things that help sharpness are a trrpod and if you have that use a VR lens. But don't use both at the same time

Whenever you see a picture of mine, now or in the future, it is and will be as taken. I prefer natural shots with only the available lighting. Consequently none of the photos above have been photoshopped.
Pic #1 was shot using the D7100 using aperture setting; aperture at 5.6; shutter speed at 1/250; ISO at 600; lens was Nikon 55-300 shot at 300
Pic#2 was shot using aperture setting; aperture at 5.6; shutter speed at 1/500;ISO at 200;a 55-300 lens at 240 mm length..
Pic # 3 was also taken in aperture at a setting of 1.8; shutter speed of 1/250;Iso of 100; an 18-140 lens at 140 length
If I am missing anything of interest to you or anyone else, please let me know.
