Dudes... You are being squeezed out by technology. Just look at the pictures your average smart-phone takes! You'd better do something to keep customers or go the way of the film camera. (Reducing prices comes to mind as a start.)
My Niece's $500 smart phone takes as good a pictures as my Canon SXi. Read the hand writing on the wall dudes...

I agree with the OP that smartphones do take awfully nice pictures.

Sounds like we have some people that don't know how to get the best from their camera.
Also keep in mind the XSi was a bottom end camera and is now obsolete technology wise.

The improved quality of smartphones does mean that more intermediate photographers will not see any difference between the phone and a high quality camera. Therefore, the smartphones will affect the market share of the "Big Two."

For the average shooter, they're close enough that the smartphones are winning the war. Look at the statistics. And the advances that phone makers are making in technology are more practical than the camera companies.

When I had an issue with illegal parking in our lot last week, I didn't reach for my 24mp camera. I used my iPhone, mailed the picture to the ranger which he was able to imbed in the citation; try that with a Canon or Nikon.

The average smart phone takes very good pictures as long as
* there is enough light
* things are not moving too fast
* things are close enough
* the pictures will be posted online
Start pushing them a little, and the interchangeable lens cameras pull ahead quickly.

Comparing your niece's current smart phone with a 6+ year old camera just isn't reasonable. Compare it to today's $500 Canon/Nikon DSLR, and the DSLR still wins for image results. Neither company has been sleeping for the past 6 years.

Until I want to go out and play I never grab my camera bag.

I'm an OTR truck driver. If there is a problem with a load or a tire I grab my phone and take pictures. Lots of shippers now take pictures of the load after they secure it. It's all done with the shop cell phone.

The point is that now everybody has a camera and takes pictures. I'm willing to bet the vast majority of people posting on Facebook, or taking pictures of cops in MO don't even own any other camera but their phone. Once len attachments for phones get a little better I'll bet that number goes up.

But only for posting on line - prints are a whole other story. :)

There is a very big difference between proper photography and just taking pictures.

But it doesn't.

Do you know where smart phone shots look good?

On your smart phone...lol.

Do you know where they fall apart?

Everywhere else.

I guess you think by using a cellphone to take a picture that makes that person a photographer. Get serious as one person stated try comparing it to today's Nikon or Canon and then tell me about it. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 the newest an the best built in camera cellphone and I sure am not going to go out in the swap and take Photograph's of wild life with it.
