I have been on the board for a while, mostly on the "Chit Chat" forum, but I finally have a question for the photographers.

I just bought a D7100 bundle for around $1600. 18-140 zoom, and 55-300 zoom, and some accessories included.

I am 62 and grew up with a dark room as a kid, so I know the difference between F stops and depth of field, ISO (used to be DIN in film,) etc., etc.

What I need are some suggestions for books on how to use the D7100. I have watched a number of YouTube videos, which are fine, but I want something I can grab and go to if I need some clarification.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

David Busch's guides are excellent - check them out on Amazon. I have both of his books on the D800e (main guide over 600 pages and his field guide which is the condensed version for travel).

I also have a David Busch's guide but for the D7000 and can recommend it. I imagine the guide for the D7100 is just a rework of this.

Yep, I saw his work on Amazon and I think I even saw some of his videos on YouTube, but nothing beats a recommendation from a user.

Thanks eco.

Looks like I will get Busch's guide. Thanks for taking the time out of a busy world to help me out, fotojudd. Greatly appreciated.

No particular recommendations.
But I have my references on my Smarter-than-me phone and also on an IPad.
Often when I am otherwise indisposed, I will pull out the phone a read a bit. And have the references with me anywhere I might be using the camera. ;)

I have read 4 not including the manual. The easiest to follow and most comprehensive in my opinion is mastering the d7100 by Darrell Young.

I have the book "Mastering the Nikon D7100" by Darrell Young. Very good book, has screen photos on every thing he does. I always take it with me when I am out shooting.
At 87 years old it is very easy to forget something. You can't go wrong with this book.

I have a 7100 and I agree that this is a good book especially because Darrell provides his recommended settings with explanations. And he covers EVERY possible setting available on the camera.

I have the same bundle. I purchased about six months ago.

Books I have found useful are Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon D7100" (both electronic and softcover versions), John Batdorff's Nikon D7100: From Snapshots to Great Shots" and, since like you I had a film background, I picked up Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Photography" (his Understanding Photography Field Guide is also on par).

I also picked up a couple of DVDs. A Nikon DVD came with the camera; it's of limited use. Since I'm at work and not at home, I can't recall the name of the other one. :)

Also a fan of Darrell's Young's books: "Mastering the D300" and "Mastering the D7100".

He takes you through the initial setup with what the options are and why he uses them.

It's not that he creates the perfect template for how you should set up your DSLR-- but he explains what each option means... I also like how he cross-references with the Nikon owner's manual, page number, etc.
(I happen to be a "manual freak"...yes I've read my user's manual cover-to-cover and if only you could see how dog-eared it is...!)

Thanks to all for your quick replies. I think I'll take a cruise on to B&N and check out the referenced guide books.

I also found the ebook version of "Mastering the D7100" invaluable!

Don't laugh, but 'Nikon D7100 for Dummies' is an excellent book. It is comprehensive, full of photos, yet written in simple English. Don't be mislead by the title--it is a very helpful book, whether you are a beginner, or an old hand. I bought mine on ebay for around $23. :-)
