A century ago, we regarded the oceans as a limitless waste disposal area. We dumped sewage, industrial pollution, garbage and anything else into them. Belatedly we realized the mistakes we had made (and are still making. Look up "Pacific Gyre." )
We did much the same on the Great Lakes with sewage, tailings, oil and garbage.
A century hence, we likely will be decrying our heedless pollution of the sky.
If we're still around.

If you are into 8mm, try to get an old Eumig projector.I picked up one at a garage sale a couple of years ago. It was a truly remarkable piece of technology and engineering for its time (mid sixties maybe... not sure...)It handles both 8 and Super 8.It is self threading. It has a zoom lens. And I was able to replace the bulb easily with an ordinary household halogen bulb. It also purrs and clicks along nicely. In dubbing old films to DVD I often record the running sound of the projector along with the images.

But that's different. I know professionals prefer the artistic qualities of film. It's much like back in the still darkroom days, we had our favourite papers or developers and the differences were often very subtle and very personal. But the distinctions were lost for snapshots.
But 8mm movies are not a pro medium. Back before professional videotape, there was a effort to use Super 8 film for television news work.(The standard had been 16mm SOF.) But it never went anywhere and videotape became the standard because it was easier, quicker and cheaper.

Good point. Maybe the quality has improved since I gave up 8mm. But in transferring old films to video, screening them for the first time in years, I was struck by two things...the lousy quality of the images and the necessarily short takes. As I recall a new roll of film only gave you 5 minutes shooting total.

But other than nostalgia, why???

Are we going to see a retro revival of home movies like the puzzling revival of vinyl records? Why would anyone want to use a bulky old silent Super 8 film camera when you can take high quality video with stereo sound even on a cell phone?
What's next? An updated Commodore 64?

I have the same problem. One thing advanced age grants us is discretion. I frequently say "You look lovely" or "That's a beautiful dress." Maybe not a good idea when talking to a young woman but I don't think any woman over 40 is offended by a sincere compliment.

Makes me nostalgic for the smell of hypo and acetic acid and the wonderful sensation that has been lost to the computer: watching a BW image magically emerge in a tray of Dektol.

Wonderful stuff! They would not be half as good in colour!

I discovered one amazing quality of Gimp. If you use the "cartoon" setting at minimum, it is an incredible sharpening tool. I took already good images and they came out like something from an 8x10 view camera. Also there is none of the pixelating and noise often produced by the PS sharpening tools.I'm not sure if the difference will still be so noticeable after going through the Internet, but I have attached before and after examples.

I too have a collection of old roll films cameras including a Speed Graphic with a roll film back. But the very best of them all is my old Rolleiflex. Solid, reliable, great lens, quick and easy to use. But the best thing was the ability to shoot from the chest rather than holding it your eye. I wish somebody would come up with a digital equivalent.

I got very interested in Eisenstaedt and looked him up on YouTube. There is a fascinating four part series in which he discusses the thinking and circumstances behind some of his famous pictures and gives advice that is still great all these years later. Also a lot of other stuff including a compelling portfolio of his shots.

I have found out that the opera performed that day was the premiere of a new work (now forgotten) by Rimsky-Korsikov called "Legend Of the Invisible City Of Kitezh."
My interest is because opera (as well as photography) is a passion. Still like to know who the lady is/was and what happened to her during the war. I'm framing a copy of this for myself and may give a few more to some of my opera buddies for Christmas.

This is a favourite photo of mine. It was shot by Alfred Eisenstaedt at La Scala in Milan on Jan 1 1934. I have learned that he used a Leica on a tripod and that although the picture was not published at the time, it was one of his favourites. What I would like to know is who the lady was (a socialite, apparently), what happened to her in the coming tempestuous years and what opera was being performed that day.
