Crazy idea as usual...
In the search for ET, should we not be looking for trash around a planet instead of 'signs of life'????
In a few decades Earthling have created a 'defense shield' mad of trash so why are we not thinking that is would any different for ET to pollute?

That happened a few weeks ago. A planet was discovered with lots of "stuff" orbiting, much like earth. It turned out that the stuff was just space debris.

Well, now we need to figure out if it artificial or natural...
We have 'just space debris' too...

A century ago, we regarded the oceans as a limitless waste disposal area. We dumped sewage, industrial pollution, garbage and anything else into them. Belatedly we realized the mistakes we had made (and are still making. Look up "Pacific Gyre." )
We did much the same on the Great Lakes with sewage, tailings, oil and garbage.
A century hence, we likely will be decrying our heedless pollution of the sky.
If we're still around.

Need to keep in mind about half of intelligent species are advanced beyond us...some likely billions of years. Unlikely a civilization even a few thousand years beyond us would need hardware in orbit...and the stuff from when they were back at our stage would have dissipated long ago.
They also would need to communicate and travel at faster than light speeds...something we currently do not know how to do. That is one reason searching for radio waves (light speed limited) won't yield anything. There are some ideas as to how this might develop but no success so far.
