Natural light night photography is so dependent on the camera you have. As a journalist, I have to shoot photos at night. The sole reason I bought the 5d's is for low light. My problem is compounded because I can't use a tripod with live action involving people or many times flash. I was taking photos a Christmas boat regatta in Tempe two years ago. I still hadn't reconciled the money I spend on my 5dm2. It was after dark. My photos were fine. I turned on saw a group of photographers with tripods. I was hand holding. They were complaining the boats were going too fast to get good photos. Then I knew I'd spend my money wisely. I just picked up a 5dm3 from a guy who thought it was too complicated. Got a great deal on it. I went to downtown tempe at 10 p.m. and got shots my 5dm2 couldn't take. It's an expensive way to get better night shots but this is where the camera's technical side aids the photographer. Unfortunately, it's very expensive to get sensors that sensitive. I know a lot of people complain about not getting good night shots but unfortunately we are limited by the equipment we have. I'll try to post some night photos when I'm at my other computer.

Welcome to Day 168 :) Today it's sort of a confession day. We get to admit what gives us the most trouble photographically. I don't expect everybody to be saying great photos today...I expect it's going to be more of a problem solving day. This one was really tough for me because there are so many things that I need a lot of work on .. macros, still lifes, portraits, the list goes on and on .. it was difficult to choose just one. So I decided to go with night photography. This subject is really bad for me .. I can't see at night so I can't tell if things are in focus .. unless I go right after sunset .. So I waited until 11 pm when it was really dark out to show you just how bad it is LOL. Here are my terrible examples of what not to do LOL. These are all shot on manual.. 30 sec. exposures. Let's see yours :)

The 5dm3 is my dream camera ... I kept telling myself that I couldn't justify the cost .. but now I tell myself it's one cost I cannot afford pass up. I hope you do post some photos taken with it Jer ... I would really love to see them.

I recently got the 5d mark iii....my first digital full frame. I agonized over the cost...whether I could justify buying it...whether I would be able to figure it out. Well, it has turned out to be wonderful. I have had to study but it has been so worthwhile. My daddy used to tell me that I could do anything if I know the vocabulary and have the right tools. I think that through study I have the vocabulary and with the 5DM3 I have the tool. Love it. Get one if you can.

photogrl57, Technically this is not a pet but you did say we could include birds that came to eat in your back yard. Well, what about a copper head who showed up on my walk yesterday? He was just sunning.

Wow great capture .. I love it ... pg 22

I took this photo in DC in April but had a hard time editing it the way I wanted. This photo is from the right side facing the front corner. I was trying to get the LaceMaple along with a piece of the capitol. It was shot a about 1:00pm in bright sun with a 5d Mark iii at f/4, 1/50 sec, ISO 100. Focal range was 28. I only resized the original but played around with two different techniques that I am not sure that I am satisfied with. Please feel free to comment, critique, edit etc. Thanks.

I like the composition. The best way I know to get the lighter areas properly exposed in the pictures is to shoot HDR. that would allow the capital building and the sky to show up better.

will need to try HDR in the future. Thanks.

HDR is also a good option. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I am still learning to use my first full frame digital camera...I am getting the hang of it but still get lost in all the options. I can handle some of the PS parts but have not mastered the program yet. I will try your suggestion. I think my main objective was to reflect the beauty of the tree...and still get a piece of the capitol. I am sure that it would have been better to avoid the overhead sunlight.

At least on my part my evaluation is purely subjective as I don't pretend to be a pro photographer or even to be skilled at composition or post processing... Having said that I like the original picture more so than the processed photos. The processed photos in my opinion seem to be a little washed out and the color somewhat distorted in PP and they just seem to soft to me, but then again I kinda like contrast in photos so like I said it is personal taste. Were you trying to correct for the back lighting in the original photo? Often when I have a photograph that I am unhappy with just a part of the photo in regard to color or contrast I will go into quick mask and set a gradient mask over the area of my concern and then return to the normal mode and inverse my selection and edit just the part of the picture that I am trying to add or detract from. What is nice about the gradient mask is that as it transitions back to the unedited area of the photograph it does so gradually so that you if did not go crazy with your editing people looking at your photograph should not be able to notice the editing ever occurred but will find the photo to be more pleasing. On your black and white photo I kinda like it it seems to have a little bit of a HDR thing going on, if you have not found them already photoshop also has photographic filters that mimic the old filters that B&W photographers used in the old days, you may want to play with those as see if they make a difference that you may find pleasing. Back in the day B&W photographers used the filters to control and enhance contrast.

It may be that you already know all this as you may even be a much more accomplished user than am I as at best I am an intermediate user... Hope that I helped and if not maybe someone else will read this thread that will find it helpful.

Love number 1....interesting, sharp and tells a story. Her expression in 3 is great. Children are hard to capture sometimes. I try to use Av to isolate with a fast lens in good light. Also, I try to use a long lens so that I do not have to get too close.
