Canon 100mm L vs 180mm L macro. Once again I come to the well of knowledge of the UHH and am stuck which to purchase.
The $500.00 and additional 1.1 lb of the 180mm is not a show stopper. Any & all help will be appreciatedÂ…..this is my Christmas present to me.
I Thank all members of the UHH.

Adorama has a $150 rebate right now on the 100mm L. I have been debating this decision for about 6 months now. I really wanted the 180 for its working distance, but the heavier weight is an issue for me. Also, the 100 is said to be excellent for portraits and my hubby could use it too. Lighter and more versatile makes the 100 L my choice. If I win the lottery I'll get both :D.

I have the 100L with IS and really love it. I don't use it much for macro though. It does a great job as a macro lens but good macro photography seems to require a higher degree of patience than I have. It isn't a breeze with ANY lens, or tubes or bellows.
I use the 100L macro for very close up work such as flowers with great results but my days of pursuing bugs eyeballs are over.
BTW. The IS is only marginally effective at really close distances.

The best review of this lens (which also mentions other macros) is at;

Thanks for posting this review. It helped me make up my mind. I'm going to go with the 100 L. Adoroma has it with a $150 rebate right now too.

Looks beautiful, but noisy. What were your settings?

Great color, great composition, wonderful subject matter. I love the foreground contents that lead me further into the image. I can't stop looking at it. It's just so beautiful.

I know this is a critique and analysis section so I'll tell you what I like because as far as I can see there's nothing wrong. Do you ever take a bad photo?
I love your people/street shots. I love how the detail comes out in that glass and wood. I don't need to see the man behind the glass because he's more interesting as a mystery. Maybe they are life long friends that get together regularly for a pint.
You are blessed my friend. I'm just glad you share them with us.

I agree that you could crop at the bust line and it would still work. I'm not a portrait person, but I really think you did a great job with this one. I think the lighting is great.

I didn't even notice those, but removing them really did make it so much better. :)

After reading other comments I went back and looked again. The issue around the ear doesn't bother me. Nothing about this really bothers me. I like it. I love the eyes and the lighting. I don't mind head cropped. Actually I just did one myself and it's a shot I truly love. I wasn't sure why I didn't like it here until someone mentioned the hairline on the forehead. I scrolled (as to crop out the hairline on the forehead) and, WALAH, it did it for me. That was all I needed.

One of those street portraits that just didn't make my portfolio.
I liked it but not as good as some of my other stuff.
Composed off center with a menacing look contributed to the name.

Do not edit this photo but feel free to critique away. I provided the download.
The photo was done in my Dark Portraiture style. I have another photo called "Drifter" that beat this out and did make my portfolio.

The only thing I don't like about this is that I would like to see the rest of his head. I like the coloring and the unbalanced composition.

Love these Ducks.
C/C Welcome

LOVE!

The reflection shadow in the eye is great. These ducks are so beautiful with all their color. I wish we had them here.

You got great detail. Personally, I'd like to see a little more room to the left side of the frame, but it works the way it is. Nice capture.

tainkc, one thing I have learnt in reading and studying portraits is you never have her nose which is outside, of whatever side of the face, where it protrudes past the cheek line It looks all nose to me and I'm sure she is very pretty. Is this suppose to be a high key portrait image or you have just taken it the way you had it in front of your camera.
Dave.

I didn't notice the nose issue until you mentioned it, Dave. Obviously it's not a problem until you notice it. I still love this shot, but it's something to keep in mind for the next shot.

last Sunday i was taking some landscape pics...it was just about sunset and i noticed the rising half moon...took a few pics and got this one of the moon reflecting off the clouds....all comments good or bad are welcome.

I don't know what causes this, but where I live I've seen this a few times over the years. Of course, not since I've gotten into photography.

I prefer the horizontal crop.

I love the lighting, love the pose, love the softness and warmth. The only piece of hair that bothers me is the little one coming out across her forehead, but it doesn't bother me enough that I would worry about removing it.

Nice job!
