In a photo with a creature filling the frame such as this one the first thing one ordinarily wishes is crucial focus, especially on the eyes. You have more than achieved this and with outstanding detail though out the feathers.

Another concern would be a background that is not busy and distracting to the subject. You have accomplished this but could always be overly fastidious and remove the white feathers (?) in the background.

As far as selecting an interesting subject, the colorful plumage alone makes Mr Mandarin a fine choice. It also appears you shot down low for a better perspective than shooting from above.

A fine photograph indeed Granddad.

PS Folks might be interested in knowing your settings without having to search the EXIF.

LOVE!

The reflection shadow in the eye is great. These ducks are so beautiful with all their color. I wish we had them here.

You got great detail. Personally, I'd like to see a little more room to the left side of the frame, but it works the way it is. Nice capture.

I didn't even notice those, but removing them really did make it so much better. :)

I think it's perfect now. The improvement is actually much more than I thought it would be. Thanks for the settings too. I was curious about the aperture because you had such good depth of field on the duck yet nice background separation even though the background appeared fairly close to the subject. Yep....f/8 is the perfect selection, you obviously know what you are doing!

Thanks for the info and your professional photograph.
